Diallylated p-coumaric acid (A2CM) and triallylated caffeic acid (A3CF) were synthesized by the reactions of p-coumaric acid and caffeic acid with allyl bromide in the presence of potassium carbonate. The thiol-ene photopolymerization of A2CM and a pentaerythritol-based tetrathiol (S4P) as well as that of A3CF/S4P at allyl/thiol and (allyl + enone)/thiol ratios of 1/1 produced cured products. The FT-IR spectral anal. revealed that the thiol-ene reaction of allyl and thiol groups mainly progressed for the products cured at an allyl/thiol ratio of 1/1, while both allyl and enone groups reacted with thiol groups for the products cured at an (allyl + enone)/thiol ratio of 1/1. The progress of the thiol-ene reaction of the enone and thiol groups caused the lowering of the glass transition and 5% weight loss temperatures (Tg and Td5). The A3CF/S4P cured at an allyl/thiol ratio of 1/1 exhibited the highest Tg, Td5, tensile strength, and tensile modulus among all the cured products.

High-accuracy temperature measurement plays a vital role in biomedical, oceanog., and photovoltaic industries. Here, a highly sensitive temperature sensor is proposed and demonstrated based on cascaded polymer-infiltrated Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs), operating near the dispersion turning point. The MZI was constructed by splicing a half-pitch graded index fiber (GIF) and two sections of single-mode fiber and creating an inner air cavity based on femtosecond laser micromachining. The UV-curable polymer-infiltrated air cavity functioned as one of the interference arms of MZI, and the residual GIF core functioned as the other. Two MZIs with different cavity lengths and infiltrated with the UV-curable polymers, having the refractive indexes on the different sides of the turning point, were created. Moreover, the effects of the length and the bending way of transmission SMF between the first and the second MZI were studied. As a result, the cascaded MZI temperature sensor exhibits a greatly enhanced temperature sensitivity of -24.86 nm/°C based on wavelength differential detection. The aforementioned result makes it promising for high-accuracy temperature measurements in biomedical, oceanog., and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract: Despite major advances in polymer chem., cotton still remains the principal textile component in the global pharmaceutical industry owing to its intrinsic strength, thermal stability, biocompatibility, and pleasant texture. Nevertheless, the hydrophilic nature of cotton requires the development of strategies for the incorporation of hydrophobic functional mols. into the fabric for controlled-release applications. To address this issue, we designed biodegradable crosslinked poly(β-amino ester) (PBAE) coatings as reservoirs for the incorporation of small hydrophobic mols. and studied their release profiles under physiol. conditions. Two PBAEs with different hydrophobic and degradation properties were prepared and crosslinked to cotton fabrics in the presence of azulene, which served as a model hydrophobic, active material. Optimization of the crosslinking process in terms of UV curing time and the amount of solvent revealed that curing time of 15 min using 0.5 mL of chloroform was the optimal crosslinking condition. The coatings were characterized by FTIR, XPS, and SEM as well as TGA and DSC analyses. Sustained release of azulene was observed, and there was a correlation between azulene delivery rates and the hydrophobicity of the coating. These results provide a potentially useful platform for the rational design of cotton-based controlled-release systems for bioactive mol. delivery applications.

For the thermal management of high watt d. circuit layers, it is common to use a filled epoxy system to provide an elec. insulating but thermally conducting bond to a metal substrate. An epoxy-thiol system filled with boron nitride (BN), in the form of 2, 30 and 180μm platelets, has been investigated with a view to achieving enhanced thermal conductivity The effect of BN content on the cure reaction kinetics has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry and the thermal conductivity of the cured samples has been measured by the transient hot bridge method. The heat of reaction and the glass transition temperature of the fully cured samples are both independent of the BN content, but the cure reaction kinetics is systematically affected by both BN content and particle size. These results can be correlated with the thermal conductivity of the cured systems, which is found to increase with both BN content and particle size. For a given BN content, the thermal conductivity found here is significantly higher than most others reported in the literature; this effect is attributed to a Lewis acid-base interaction between filler and matrix.

Herein, Payne effect in diverse filled vulcanizates is investigated for generalizing the common characteristics. Master curves of strain amplitude dependent storage modulus are created with respect to microscopic strain amplitude of the matrix, revealing a matrix-dominated elastic nonlinearity being independent of type and dispersity of filler, crosslinking d. and sol fraction of matrix and filler-rubber interfacial interactions. However, carbonaceous fillers with higher affinity to the rubber matrixes yield lower strain amplification and higher overshoot behavior in comparison with siliceous silica. The investigation would be illuminating for preparing rubber nanocomposites with optimized reinforcement and softening performances.

Herein we describe the development of a homogeneous assay for the detection of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA) and 2,4-dinitroaniline (2,4-diNA). This assay relies on fluorescent molecularly imprinted nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) which, upon interaction with the target analytes, generate a reduction in fluorescence emission intensity (quenching). This is due to a responsive fluorescent monomer (N-2-propenyl-(5-dimethylamino)-1-naphthalene sulfonamide) employed in the manufacture of the nanoMIPs which, by virtue of the imprinting process, is capable of selective interaction with the target analyte, thus giving rise to a quenching effect. Selectivity experiments showed excellent recognition properties toward the target mol. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity of these nanoMIPs decreased as the concentration of the imprinted analyte increased from 10 nM to 2.71 μM. A linear relation between the neg. logarithm of 4-NA or 2,4-diNA concentrations and the fluorescence intensity for both nanosystems was found (R2 = 0.991 and R2 = 0.9895), with excellent sensitivity (limit of detection (LOD) = 7 and 6 nM, resp.). Furthermore, both nanosystems have been successfully applied for detection of 4-NA or 2,4-diNA in tap water, with recoveries between 90% to 100.6% and 92% to 100.3%, resp. Thanks to the versatility of the imprinting process, this nanosystem holds the potential for further development of several optical sensors for many other compounds [Figure not available: see fulltext.]
