How to prompt higher photocatalytic hydrogen production (PHP) efficiency from water to achieve practical applications still remains a big challenge with conjugated porous polymers (CPP)-based photocatalysts. Herein, a simple and efficient cosolvent-assisted strategy is developed to significantly improve the photocatalytic efficiency of CPP-based photocatalysts by introducing water-soluble aprotic bipolar co-solvents, including N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and N-Me pyrrolidone (NMP). The PHP activity of the pyrene-bithiophene-based CPP (named CP-St) using ascorbic acid (AA) as a sacrificial electron donor could be excellently accelerated in the presence of an aprotic bipolar NMP solvent. CP-St dispersed in an NMP/H2O/AA mixed solution under visible-light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation without the aid of a Pt cocatalyst achieved an unprecedented hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 190.7 mmol h-1 g-1. As a result, 6 mg CP-St amazingly produced 128.1 mL H2 (∼5.72 mmol) under visible-light irradiation for only 5 h. Excitingly, by introducing 0.5 wt% Pt cocatalyst into the NMP/H2O/AA system, the HER of CP-St could be further boosted to 303.7 mmol h-1 g-1 (1.82 mmol h-1/6 mg), which represents the highest photocatalytic HER ever reported. This outstanding photocatalytic performance is mainly ascribed to the enhanced dispersity, strong hydrogen-bond interactions, and exfoliation effect by the NMP solvent. This study provides us with some new design ideas and opportunities for effectively catering to the actual hydrogen production demand.

Narrow band gap conjugated polymer zwitterions (CPZs) were synthesized by Suzuki polymerization and characterized to understand their electronic properties and utility as cathode modification layers in solar cells. The polymers were prepared from diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and iso-indigo monomers containing sulfobetaine (SB) pendant groups, benefiting from an ion-rich aqueous phase in the polymerizations UV-vis absorption spectroscopy revealed the optical energy gap value for the CPZs, ranging from 1.7 to 1.2 eV. UPS of the CPZs as thin layers on Ag metal showed that the pendent zwitterions impart an interfacial dipole (Δ) to the metal and a work function reduction of ∼0.9 eV. OPVs fabricated using a conventional bulk heterojunction (BHJ) device architecture of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/(PTB7:PC71BM)/CPZ/Ag led to dramatic improvements in power conversion efficiency (PCE) values relative to devices having bare Ag cathodes (PCE < 2% for bare Ag vs. 6.7-7.7% for CPZ/Ag). The benzothiadiazole (BT)/DPP polymer denoted as PT2BTDPPSB gave an optimal PCE of 7.7% in a conventional BHJ OPV device architecture fabricated on a Ag cathode. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. A series of novel soluble donor-acceptor low-bandgap-conjugated polymers consisting of different oligothiophene (OTh) coupled to electron-accepting moiety 2-pyran-4-ylidenemalononitrile (PM)-based unit were synthesized by Stille or Suzuki coupling polymerization The combination of electron-accepting PM building block with varied OThn (the number of thiophene unit increases from 3 to 5) results in enhanced π-π stacking in solid state and intramol. charge transfer (ICT) transition, which lead to an extension of the absorption spectra of the copolymers. Cyclic voltammetry measurements and MO distribution calculations indicate that the highest occupied MOs (HOMO) energy levels could be fine-tuned by changing the number of thiophene units of the copolymers, and the resulting copolymers possessed relatively low HOMO energy levels promising good air stability and high-open circuit voltage (Voc) for photovoltaic application. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated by using the copolymers as donors and (6,6)-Ph C61-butyric acid Me ester as acceptor. The highest Voc reached 0.94 V, and the short circuit currents (Jsc) were improved from 1.78 to 2.54 mA/cm2, though the power conversion efficiencies of the devices were measured between 0.61 and 0.99% under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm2, which indicated that this series copolymers can be promising candidates for the photovoltaic applications.

The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro interactions of ambroxol hydrochloride (ABH) or amlodipine (AML) with commonly used antibacterial agents, including meropenem, imipenem-cilastatin sodium, biapenem, cefoperazone-sulbactam, polymyxin B, and tigecycline, against six carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) clin. isolates. Drug interactions were interpreted using two models, i.e., the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) model and the percentage of growth difference (ΔE) model. The results show that a majority of the combination groups exhibited partial synergy and additive interactions, such as the combinations of carbapenems and cefoperazone-sulbactam (SCF) with ABH or AML. While the combination of PB/AML exhibited synergistic interactions against all tested isolates, and PB/ABH exhibited synergistic interactions against two isolates. The FICI and ΔE model correlated very well for the combinations of PBABH and PB/AML against AB2. The combinations of TGC with ABH or AML mainly exhibited additive and indifferent interactions. There were no antagonistic interactions observed in any of the combinations. In conclusion, this study revealed that the non-antibacterial agents ABH or AML can work synergistically or partial synergistically with antibacterial agents against CRAB. This finding is crucial for overcoming the carbapenem resistance of A. baumannii.

By Suzuki coupling reaction, three pairs of chiral conjugated polymers with optically stable helical aromatic ester subunits as the main-chain were designed and synthesized. Polymers (+)-P-P1 and (-)-M-P1, (+)-P-P2 and (-)-M-P2 showed strong fluorescence emission, strong mirror image CD and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals in THF. For polymers (+)-P-P3 and (-)-M-P3, containing the tetraphenylethene (TPE) moiety, they not only showed obvious aggregation induced enhancement emission (AIEE), but also exhibited mirror image CD signals and aggregation-induced enhancement CPL signals in THF-water mixtures Moreover, (+)-P-P3 and (-)-M-P3 could also form chiral nanoparticles by solvent evaporation induced self-assembly. Interestingly, it was further found that the size of the nanoparticles could be controlled by the changing of THF/water ratio, and their CPL properties were also shown.

In the current study, the tilapia was orally vaccinated by the attenuated Streptococcus agalactiae(S. agalactiae) strain YM001, and the distribution and the pathol. effect of strain YM001 in different intestinal segments of tilapia were evaluated by real-time PCR(qPCR), immunohistochem.(IHC) and histomorphol. The qPCR results showed that the number of bacteria was the highest in the intestinal tracts at 12 h post oral gavage in the YM001 group, then began to decrease sharply and eliminated at 7 d. And the number of bacteria was highest in the foregut, hindgut, and rectum at 12 h, 24 h, and 3 d, resp. IHC indicated that bacteria mainly distributed in the margin epithelium and the goblet cells at 12 h – 24 h, and in the submucosa and muscle layer in the YM001 group in 3 d post gavage, then almost disappeared at 7 d. Histol. examination of intestines post gavage displayed that an inflammation was observed at 7 d in the YM001 group and the intestinal structure was fully recovered at 15 d. and the intestinal structure was fully recovered at 15 d. The attenuated S. agalactiae vaccine strain YM001 could enter the intestinal tissue after oral gavage and had a strong spatial and temporal selectivity in the intestinal tract, which could cause obvious mucosal immune response and mild pathol. reaction, but the pathol. change could be gradually repaired with the extinction of bacteria in the body.

In order to develop conjugated polymers with low band gaps and deep HOMO levels, copolymers consisting of alternating dodecyl thieno[3,4-b]thiophene-2-carboxylate and one (DTT-T1) or two thiophene rings (DTT-T2) were synthesized. The estimated optical band gap and HOMO level of DTT-T1 and DTT-T2 were ∼1.58/1.61 and ∼-5.15/-5.20 eV, resp., indicating that the polymers have relatively low band gaps and deep HOMO levels, as compared to many other reported polymers. Photovoltaic devices were fabricated using DTT-T2 and a fullerene derivative (PCBM), and whose power conversion efficiency was 0.21% under the illumination of AM 1.5 (100 mW/cm2). The low conversion efficiency of the devices was attributed to the inefficiency of exciton formation due to the low absorption coefficient and self-quenching of the polymer and the un-optimized device conditions.
