Chemoresponsive polymers are of technol. significance for smart sensors or systems capable of mol. recognition. An important key requirement for these applications is the material’s structural integrity after stimulation. We explored whether covalently crosslinked metal ion-phosphine coordination polymers (MPN) can be shaped into any temporary shape and are capable of recovering from this upon chemoresponsive exposure to triphenylphosphine (Ph3P) ligands, whereas the MPN provide structural integrity. Depending on the metal-ion concentration used during synthesis of the MPN, the degree of swelling of the coordination polymer networks could be adjusted. Once the MPN was immersed into Ph3P solution, the reversible ligand-exchange reaction between the metal ions and the free Ph3P in solution causes a decrease of the coordination crosslink d. in MPN again. The Ph3P-treated MPN was able to maintain its original shape, indicating a certain stability of shape even after stimulation. In this way, chemoresponsive control of the elastic properties (increase in volume and decrease of mech. strength) of the MPN was demonstrated. This remarkable behavior motivated us to explore whether the MPN are capable of a chemoresponsive shape-memory effect. In initial experiments, shape fixity of around 60% and shape recovery of almost 90% were achieved when the MPN was exposed to Ph3P in case of rhodium. Potential applications for chemoresponsive shape-memory systems could be shapable semiconductors, e.g., for lighting or catalysts, which provide catalytic activity on demand.

Microphase-separated structures of a series of ABn block-graft copolymers were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Five block-graft copolymers composed of the same polystyrene (S) backbone having polyisoprene (I) grafts with different chain lengths, wherein the numbers of grafts are almost constant (38 on average), were synthesized by living anionic polymerizations, resulting in coverage of the polystyrene composition range 0.32 ≤ φS ≤ 0.91. It was confirmed from the TEM observation that three low φS samples with φS of 0.32, 0.37, and 0.39 show complex spherical structures, while the sample with an φS of 0.57 reveals a hexagonal assembly of hexagonal rods of S in an I matrix, and the sample with φS of 0.91 exhibits inverse morphologies having rods of I in an S matrix. From detailed TEM and SAXS investigation combined with simulations, it has been found that the spherical structures formed from the samples with φS of 0.32 and 0.37 are both confirmed to have the structural feature of the Frank-Kasper A15 phase, which possesses the structural symmetry of the Pm3n space group.

We present the synthesis and characterization of six novel bidentate C-C* cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes derived from saturated N-heterocyclic carbene precursors, namely 1-aryl-3-methyl-1H-4,5-dihydroimidazolium salts. The first adamantyl platinum complexes were isolated and characterized, namely [(COD)Pt(2-Ad)Cl], [(dppe)Pt(2-Ad)Cl], [(COD)Pt(2-Ad)Me] and, [(dppe)Pt(2-Ad)Me] {COD = 1,5- cyclooctadiene, dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, Ad = adamantyl}. Cis-bis(η1,η2-2,2-dimethylpent-4-en-1-yl)platinum, Pt[CH2CMe2CH2CH=CH2]2 (3), is a recently discovered CVD precursor for the deposition of highly smooth Pt thin films without nucleation delays on a variety of substrates. This paper describes detailed mechanistic studies of the pathway by which 3 reacts upon being heated in solution In various solvents between 90 and 130°, 3 decomposes to generate ~1 equiv of 4,4-dimethylpentenes by addition of a H atom to the pentenyl ligands in 3. The extra H atoms arise by dehydrogenation of other pentenyl ligands; some of these dehydrogenated ligands are released as Me-substituted methylenecyclobutanes and cyclobutenes. A combination of isotope labeling and kinetic studies suggests that 3 decomposes by C-H activation of both allylic and olefinic C-H bonds to give transient Pt hydride intermediates, followed by reductive elimination steps to form the pentene products, but that the exact mechanism is solvent-dependent. In C6F6, solvent association occurs before C-H bond activation, and the rate-determining step for thermolysis is most likely the formation of a Pt σ complex. In hydrocarbon solvents, the solvent is little involved before C-H bond activation, and the rate-determining step is most likely the formation of a Pt σ complex only for γ-C-H and ε-C-H bond activation, but cleavage or formation of a C-H bond for δ-C-H bond activation. A comparison of the thermolysis reactions under CVD conditions and in solution suggests that the high smoothness of the CVD-grown films is due in part to rapid nucleation (which is a consequence of the availability of low-barrier C=C bond dissociation pathways) and in part to the formation of C-containing species that passivate the Pt surface.

This paper presents adsorption isotherm data of CO2 on four different metal oxides. Absolute adsorption isotherms of CO2 at 313 K on WO3 and at T = 313 K, 333 K, 353 K on CeO2, TiO2 and Al2O3 and pressures up to p = 25 MPa were determined from CO2 excess adsorption isotherms. It was found at 313 K a maximum absolute loading of 0.3 mmol g-1 for WO3, of 1.7 mmol g-1 for CeO2, of 3.1 mmol g-1 for TiO2 and of 6.3 mmol g-1 for Al2O3. All adsorption isotherms were fitted to the Freundlich, Langmuir, Pade, Sips and Toth models and the Pade model present a better fitting than the other models. Based on these data, the Pade and the Langmuir model were used to determine the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption which was found to be dependent on the loading and the used model.

Recent years have seen tremendous progress towards understanding the relation between the mol. structure and function of organic field effect transistors. The metrics for organic field effect transistors, which are characterized by mobility and the on/off ratio, are known to be enhanced when the intermol. interaction is strong and the intramol. reorganization energy is low. While these requirements are adequate when describing organic field effect transistors with simple and planar aromatic mol. components, they are insufficient for complex building blocks, which have the potential to localize a carrier on the mol. Here, we show that intramol. conductivity can play a role in controlling device characteristics of organic field effect transistors made with macrocycle building blocks. We use two isomeric macrocyclic semiconductors that consist of perylene diimides linked with bithiophenes and find that the trans-linked macrocycle has a higher mobility than the cis-based device. Through a combination of single mol. junction conductance measurements of the components of the macrocycles, control experiments with acyclic counterparts to the macrocycles, and analyses of each of the materials using spectroscopy, electrochem., and d. functional theory, we attribute the difference in electron mobility of the OFETs created with the two isomers to the difference in intramol. conductivity of the two macrocycles.
