Substituted ethyl benzoylacetates have been employed for the preparation of lignin model compounds in the phenylpropane-1,3-diol and phenylpropane-1,2,3-triol series. Direct reduction of these esters with LiAlH4 yields the corresponding phenylpropane-1,3-diol. Bromination followed by condensation with a phenol and reduction with LiAlH4 of the resulting ether yields the phenylglycerol β-aryl ether. Bromination followed by acetylation and reduction yields the phenylpropane-1,2,3-triol. Models in the veratryl, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl, 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl, 4-benzyloxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl, and 4-acetoxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl series were prepared Cf. Forest Prod. Salama, Paul published the artcileWhy Are Wet Wipes So Difficult to Preserve Understanding the Intrinsic Causes, Category: alcohols-buliding-blocks, the publication is Cosmetics (2021), 8(3), 73, database is CAplus.

Over the last two decades, significant advances have been made in developing disposable baby wet wipes. Wet wipes consist of two main components: nonwoven fabric and liquid Being more than 90% water, wet wipes are more susceptible to microbial growth than typical personal care products; hence, high concentrations of preservative compounds are often used to ensure extended protection against contamination. However, there is an obvious tendency to minimize the concentration of irritating actives. Baby wet wipes should contain particularly mild surfactants, well-tolerated preservatives, and a buffer system maintaining the formulation pH at a suitable level for the infant’s skin. Efforts have been centered on removing ingredients with irritation potential, such as phenoxyethanol. In addition, a move towards more natural fabrics is occurring. However, these modifications provoke new challenges in preserving the final products. The nature and composition of the fiber can influence the interactions between the preservative and the wipe, subsequently affecting the performance of the preservative system. In this study, we analyzed the causes of the challenge in preserving wet wipes. We found that fabrics containing natural fibers are the main source of contamination, promoting the generation of biofilms on their surfaces. Moreover, the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) was utilized to rationalize the physicochem. interactions between the fabric and the preservatives.

Preservation using combinations of antibacterial mols. has several advantages, such as reducing the level of usage and broadening their antimicrobial spectrum. More specifically, the use of quaternary ammonium surfactants (QAS)-which are profusely used in hair care products and some are known as efficient antimicrobial agents-is limited due to some potential cytotoxicity concerns. This study shows that the concentration of some widely used cosmetic preservatives can be decreased when combined with very small quantities of QAS, i.e., Polyquaternium-80 (P-80) and/or Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC). The antimicrobial activity of their mixtures was first evaluated by determining the min. inhibitory concentration (MIC) before and after the addition of QAS. Following up on this finding and targeting an ultimate consumer friendly antimicrobial blend, yet with optimal safety, we chose to utilize the food-grade preservative Maltol as the main natural origin antimicrobial agent mixed with min. concentrations of QAS to improve its moderate antimicrobial properties. The preservatives were tested for MIC values, challenge tests and synergy using the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI). The antimicrobial efficacy of Maltol was found to be synergistically improved by introducing catalytic amounts of P-80 and/or DDAC.

Facial allergic contact dermatitis caused by cosmetic products is common. New allergens in cosmetics continuously emerge. To investigate characteristics of patients with facial dermatitis (FD) between 2010 and 2019 including patch test results from cosmetic-related allergens and a new test series with cosmetic-relevant natural ingredients (CRNIs). This is a retrospective study analyzing demographics, clin. characteristics according to MOAHLFA index (male; occupation; atopic dermatitis; hand; leg; face; age ≥ 40 years), and patch test results to 27 cosmetic-relevant allergens in FD patients. A prospective study evaluating a screening test series with CRNIs in consecutive FD patients for 1 yr was also conducted. These patients received a questionnaire for collecting extra characteristics (eg, concerning quality of life). Of 8740 tested patients, 2292 (26.2%) had FD. Of these, 30.6% had cosmetic-induced FD. The most common cosmetic-related allergens were fragrances and preservatives. The most common patch test-pos. CRNIs were hydroperoxides of limonene and linalool, and propolis. Potato and peanut were rare, but the most common prick test-pos. CRNIs, however, without any relation to the use of cosmetic products. FD affected nearly all patients′ quality of life and caused limitations to their daily life. Updated management and quick diagnosis of FD is important to avoid neg. impact on patients′ quality of life.

Glycerol is currently considered a raw, renewable material, which can be used to synthesize new glycerol derivatives that may be used as green solvents. However, these compounds must be environmentally evaluated before their use. The acute ecotoxicity of a series of mono-, di-, and trialkyl ethers synthesized from glycerol for the crustacean Daphnia magna has been studied. The EC50 values of these ethers after 24 h of exposure were determined according to the OECD 202 protocol. Their possible structural-toxicity relationships according to different alkyl substituents have been discussed after applying different QSAR models (with the DARC-PELCO approach and topol. parameters). The results of the immobilization test show that most of the glycerol derivatives studied exhibit relatively low ecotoxicity. There is a correlation between the lipophilicity and the increase of the toxic effect in the crustacean biomodel. Furthermore, the length and the number of the alkyl substituents and ecotoxicity are highly related.

The photocatalytic hydroboration of alkenes and alkynes is reported. The use of newly-designed copper photocatalysts with B2Pin2 permits the formation a boryl radical, which is used for hydroboration of a large panel of alkenes and alkynes. The hydroborated products were isolated in high yields, with excellent diastereoselectivities and a high functional group tolerance under mild conditions. The hydroboration reactions were developed under continuous flow conditions to demonstrate their synthetic utility. The reaction mechanism was studied and suggested an oxidation reaction between an in situ formed borate and the Cu-photocatalyst in its excited state for the boryl radical formation.

Evaluation of multiple structurally distinct series of melanin concentrating hormone receptor 1 antagonists in an anesthetized rat cardiovascular assay led to the identification of a chromone-2-carboxamide series as having excellent safety against the chosen cardiovascular endpoints at high drug concentrations in the plasma and brain. Optimization of this series led to considerable improvements in affinity, functional potency, and pharmacokinetic profile. This led to the identification of a 7-fluorochromone-2-carboxamide (I) that was orally efficacious in a diet-induced obese mouse model, retained a favorable cardiovascular profile in rat, and demonstrated dramatic improvement in effects on mean arterial pressure in our dog cardiovascular model compared to other series reported by our group. However, this analog also led to prolongation of the QT interval in the dog that was linked to affinity for hERG channel and unexpectedly potent functional blockade of this ion channel.

Martins, Marcia S. published the artcileOccurrence of Allergens in Cosmetics for Sensitive Skin, Formula: C11H24O3, the publication is Cosmetics (2022), 9(2), 32, database is CAplus.

Sensitive skin is characterized by symptoms such as stinging and tingling in response to stimuli that usually do not cause unpleasant sensations. Epidemiol. studies show that individuals with sensitive skin are more prone to developing skin allergies, although the link between both conditions is unknown. Aiming to evaluate the presence of allergens in facial-skin products for sensitive skin, a pool of 88 cosmetic products from international brands marketed in pharmacies and parapharmacies was analyzed. A list of allergens identified in product labels was compiled and grouped according to their function. Fragrances were the most common allergens, followed by skin-conditioning agents, surfactants, and preservatives. Fragrances presenting the highest use percentages were linalool, benzyl alc., geraniol, and citronellol. Overall, the majority of cosmetic formulations were absent of fragrance allergens, being present only in 7% of products. Other allergens were found in most products (95%). This finding should be interpreted with caution, since many of these compounds are rare sensitizers and studies demonstrating their risk for individuals with sensitive skin are lacking. With this study, useful information for health professionals is provided to support their advice and to help consumers choosing cosmetic products.
