A novel and reusable nanocatalyst was synthesized by anchoring a nickel Schiff base complex onto Fe3O4@MCM-41 (Fe3O4@MCM-41@Ni-P2C) and characterization was accomplished with Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric anal. (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM (SEM) and at. absorption spectroscopy (AAS) techniques. This catalytic system was efficiently used for oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides and oxidative coupling of thiols to corresponding disulfides using H2O2 as green oxidant at room temperature These reactions were carried out in a green solvent (ethanol) and/or under solvent-free conditions with short reaction time, complete selectivity and very high conversion under mild reaction conditions. More importantly, separation and recycling of this magnetic catalyst can be easily done through a simple and low cost magnetic separation process.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder leading to cognitive deficits and cognitive decline. Since no cure or preventing therapy is currently available to counteract AD, natural-derived compounds are investigated to find new potential neuroprotective agents for its treatment. In the present study, we tested the neuroprotective effect of lavender and coriander essential oils (EOs) and their main active constituent linalool, against the neurotoxicity elicited by Aβ1-42 oligomers, a key mol. factor in the neurodegeneration of AD. Importantly, our findings on neuronally differentiated PC12 cells exposed to Aβ1-42 oligomers are in accordance with previous in vivo studies reporting the neuroprotective potential of lavender and coriander EOs and linalool. We found that lavender and coriander EOs at the concentration of 10μg/mL as well as linalool at the same concentration were able to improve viability and to reduce nuclear morphol. abnormalities in cells treated with Aβ1-42 oligomers for 24 h. Lavender and coriander EOs and linalool also showed to counteract the increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species production and the activation of the pro-apoptotic enzyme caspase-3 induced by Aβ1-42 oligomers. Our findings provide further evidence that these EOs and their main constituent linalool could be natural agents of therapeutic interest against Aβ1-42-induced neurotoxicity.

Trichoderma viride was utilized to ferment the defatted rice bran (DRB), and soluble dietary fiber was prepared before and after fermentation, named as B-SDF and F-SDF, resp. Optimum fermentation conditions for yield of F-SDF were determined using response surface methodol. (RSM). The yield of F-SDF was significantly increased from 10.5 (weight/weight, %) to 33.4 (weight/weight, %) under the optimal conditions (inoculum size = 10%, pH = 5.8 and time = 41 h). Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrated that both B-SDF and F-SDF had typical characteristics of the IR spectrum of polysaccharides, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed they were mainly substances of amorphous structure. In addition, F-SDF showed looser structure by SEM (SEM) anal., increased mol. weight by high-performance gel permeation chromatog. (HPGPC) anal., and more complex monosaccharide composition by high-performance anion exchange chromatog. (HPAEC) anal. Furthermore, functional properties anal. showed that F-SDF exhibited higher water-holding capacity (WHC), oil-holding capacity (OHC), water solubility (WS) and cholesterol absorption capacity (CAC) than B-SDF. In summary, the present study suggested that SDF from defatted rice bran obtained through Trichoderma viride fermentation has a higher potential to be used as a functional ingredient in foods.

Summary : Yam is a common ‘medicine food homol.’ vegetable in Asia, and its peel is often considered a food residue during processing or cooking. In this work, the effects of hydrogen peroxide modification on the dietary fibers (DFs) from Chinese yam peel (CYP) were investigated. The structural characteristics of soluble dietary fiber (SDF), insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), modified soluble dietary fiber (MSDF) and modified insoluble dietary fiber (MIDF) were analyzed using Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, granularity anal., SEM and GC-MS (monosaccharide composition). As results, after modification with hydrogen peroxide, the sizes of the DFs were reduced and MIDF exposed more cellulose. Experiments on the physicochem. and functional properties of DFs showed that MSDF and MIDF obtained a better water holding capacity, oil absorption capacity, swelling capacity and absorption abilities with altered structures, which is of great importance in food processing and development.

In order to explore polysaccharides from loquat leaves (LLPs) as functional food ingredients for prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, the physicochem. characteristics, in vitro binding properties, and inhibitory effects on α-amylase and α-glucosidase of polysaccharides from the leaves of different loquat cultivars, including ‘Baiyu’, ‘Chuannong8’, ‘Yuanbao’, and ‘Dawuxing’, were investigated and compared. Results showed that the contents of total uronic acids and degree of esterification in LLPs ranged from (27.04 ± 1.76)% to (41.46 ± 1.91)%, and from (20.54 ± 0.11)% to (26.90 ± 0.10)%, resp. The weight-average mol. weights of LLPs ranged from 4.307 × 106 Da to 5.101 × 106 Da, and the major constituent monosaccharides of LLPs were rhamnose, galacturonic acid, arabinose, and galactose. Furthermore, LLPs exerted strong in vitro fat binding, cholesterol binding, and bile acid binding capacities, as well as remarkable inhibitory effects on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, which might be attributed to their mol. weights, mol. weight distributions, and degree of esterification. Results are helpful for better understanding of chem. structures and bioactivities of polysaccharides from loquat leaves, and LLPs had good potential to be explored as functional food ingredients for prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

In lung cancer, CD133+ cells represent the subset of cancer stem cells (CSC) able to sustain tumor growth and metastatic dissemination. CSC function is tightly regulated by specialized niches composed of both stromal cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, mainly represented by collagen. The relevance of collagen glycosylation, a fundamental post-translational modification controlling several biol. processes, in regulating tumor cell phenotype remains, however, largely unexplored. To investigate the bioactive effects of differential ECM glycosylation on lung cancer cells, we prepared collagen films functionalized with glucose (Glc-collagen) and galactose (Gal-collagen) exploiting a neoglycosylation approach based on a reductive amination of maltose and lactose with the amino residues of collagen lysines. We demonstrate that culturing of tumor cells on collagen determines a glycosylation-dependent pos. selection of CSC and triggers their expansion/generation. The functional relevance of CD133+ CSC increase was validated in vivo, proving an augmented tumorigenic and metastatic potential. High expression of integrin β1 in its active form is associated with an increased proficiency of tumor cells to sense signaling from glycosylated matrixes (glyco-collagen) and to acquire stemness features. Accordingly, inhibition of integrin β1 in tumor cells prevents CSC enrichment, suggesting that binding of integrin β1 to Glc-collagen subtends CSC expansion/generation. We provide evidence suggesting that collagen glycosylation could play an essential role in modulating the creation of a niche favorable for the generation and selection/survival of lung CSC. Interfering with this crosstalk may represent an innovative therapeutic strategy for lung cancer treatment.

The purpose of this study was to explore the repair effect of carboxymethyl-modified corn silk polysaccharide (CSP) on oxidatively damaged renal epithelial cells and the difference in adhesion between cells and calcium oxalate crystals. The CSP was degraded and modified through carboxymethylation. An oxidatively damaged cell model was constructed by oxalate damage to human kidney proximal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells. Then, the damaged cells were repaired by modified polysaccharides, and the changes in biochem. indexes and adhesion ability between cells and crystals before and after repair were detected. Four modified polysaccharides with carboxyl group (-COOH) contents of 3.92% (CSP0), 7.75% (CCSP1), 12.90% (CCSP2), and 16.38% (CCSP3) were obtained. Compared with CSP0, CCSPs had stronger antioxidant activity, could repair damaged HK-2 cells, and could reduce phosphorylated serine eversion on the cell membrane, the expression of osteopontin (OPN) and Annexin A1, and crystal adhesion. However, its effect on the expression of hyaluronic acid synthase was not substantial. The carboxymethyl modification of the CSP can improve its ability to repair cells and inhibit crystal adhesion and aggregation. A high carboxymethylation degree results in strong polysaccharide activity. CCSPs are expected to reduce the risk of kidney stone formation and recurrence.

The chem. composition of the essential oil of flowering aerial parts of Helichrysum italicum subsp. italicum cultivated in central Italy, Marche region, was analyzed by means of gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry. Seventy-eight components, accounting for 98.71% of the whole essential oil composition, were identified and quantified. Neryl acetate showed the largest relative abundance in the composition, accounting for 15.75% of the oil, followed by α-pinene (8.21%); 4,6,9-trimethyl-8-decene-3,5-dione, (Italidione I), (7.34%); ar-curcumene and β-selinene (5.37%); γ-curcumene (4.83%); nerol (4.75%); α-selinene (4.68%); limonene (4.55%); linalool (4.42%), and 2,4,6,9-tetramethyl-8-decene-3,5-dione (Italidione II), (4.26%). The oil inhibited in vitro collagenase and elastase activities, with IC50 values of 36.99 ± 1.52 and 135.43 ± 6.32μg/mL, resp. Neryl acetate, nerol, and linalool, distinctive compounds of the oil obtained from this plant, tested alone or in mixture, at the same percentages shown in the essential oil, exhibited no activity against the two enzymes. On the contrary, α-pinene and limonene, tested alone and in mixture, showed inhibitory activity on both collagenase and elastase.
