In this content, a green approach for the ultrasound promoted in situ immobilization of Pd NPs over biodegradable chitosan/agarose modified ferrite NP (Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd) is developed. The structural and physicochemical features of the material were estimated using advanced analytical techniques like FT-IR, ICP-OES, FESEM, EDS, XRD, TEM and VSM. The magnetic material was catalytically explored in the oxidation of alcohols under ultrasonic waves. Sonication had a significant role in enhancing the catalytic performance in the alcohol’s oxidation as compared to conventional heating. The heterogeneous nanocatalyst was efficiently recycled up to 10 times with nominal loss in catalytic activity. Towards the biological applications, the Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd nanocomposite showed high antioxidant activities against DPPH free radicals, comparable to standard butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). In addition, it exhibited excellent cytotoxicity in terms of % cell viability against breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7), breast carcinoma (Hs 578Bst), infiltrating ductal cell carcinoma (Hs 319.T), and metastatic carcinoma (MDA-MB-453) cell lines. Umpolung reactions of imines, especially the asymmetric reactions, have been extensively studied as they provide access to important chiral amines in an efficient manner. The reactions studied range from simple Michael reactions to several kinds of other reactions such as the aza-benzoin reaction, aza-Stetter reaction, addition with MBH carbonate, and Ir-catalysed allylation. Herein, we report the first umpolung alkylation reaction of alpha-iminoesters with alkyl halides mediated by iminophosphorane as an organic superbase. The desired products were obtained in up to 82% yield with almost perfect regioselectivities. The key to the regioselectivity of this reaction was the use of 4-trifluoromethyl benzyl imines as a substrate. The products were successfully derivatised into the more functionalised molecules in good yields.

Site-specific incorporation of deuterium into drug molecules to study and improve their biological properties is crucial for drug discovery and development. Herein, we describe a palladium-catalyzed room-temperature deuterogenolysis of carbon-oxygen bonds in alcohols and ketones with D-2 balloon for practical synthesis of deuterated pharmaceuticals and chemicals with benzyl-site (sp(3) C-H) D-incorporation. The highlights of this deoxygenative deuteration strategy are mild conditions, broad scope, practicability and high chemoselectivity. To enable the direct use of D2O, electrocatalytic D2O-splitting is adapted to in situ supply D-2 on demand. With this system, the precise incorporation of deuterium in the metabolic position (benzyl-site) of ibuprofen is demonstrated in a sustainable and practical way with D2O.

Background: Placement of central venous access devices is a clinical procedure associated with some risk of adverse events and with a relevant cost. Careful choice of the device, appropriate insertion technique, and proper management of the device are well-known strategies commonly adopted to achieve an optimal clinical result. However, the environment where the procedure takes place may have an impact on the overall outcome in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness. Methods: We carried out a retrospective analysis on pediatric patients scheduled for a major neurosurgical operation, who required a central venous access device in the perioperative period. We divided the patients in two groups: in group A the central venous access device was inserted in the operating room, while in group B the central venous access device was inserted in the sedation room of our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. We compared the two groups in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness. Results: We analyzed 47 central venous access devices in 42 children. There were no insertion-related complications. Only one catheter-related bloodstream infection was recorded, in group A. However, the costs related to central venous access device insertion were quite different: euro330-euro540 in group A versus euro105-euro135 in group B. Conclusion: In the pediatric patient candidate to a major neurosurgical operation, preoperative insertion of the central venous access device in the sedation room rather than in the operating room is less expensive and equally safe.

H-ficolin recognizes patterns on microorganisms and stressed cells and can activate the lectin pathway of the complement system. We aimed to assess H-ficolin in relation to the progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), all-cause mortality, diabetes-related mortality, and cardiovascular events. Event rates per 10-unit H-ficolin-increase were compared in an observational follow-up of 2,410 individuals with type 1 diabetes from the FinnDiane Study. DKD progression occurred in 400 individuals. The unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) for progression was 1.29 (1.18-1.40) and 1.16 (1.05-1.29) after adjustment for diabetes duration, sex, HbA(1c), systolic blood pressure, and smoking status. After adding triglycerides to the model, the HR decreased to 1.07 (0.97-1.18). In all, 486 individuals died, including 268 deaths of cardiovascular causes and 192 deaths of complications to diabetes. HRs for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality were 1.13 (1.04-1.22) and 1.05 (0.93-1.17), respectively, in unadjusted analyses. These estimates lost statistical significance in adjusted models. However, the unadjusted HR for diabetes-related mortality was 1.19 (1.05-1.35) and 1.18 (1.02-1.37) with the most stringent adjustment level. Our results, therefore, indicate that H-ficolin predicts diabetes-related mortality, but neither all-cause mortality nor fatal/non-fatal cardiovascular events. Furthermore, H-ficolin is associated with DKD progression, however, not independently of the fully adjusted model.

New types of C-2-symmetric chiral macrodiolides are readily obtained via chiral N,N ‘-dioxide-scandium(iii) complex-promoted asymmetric tandem Friedel-Crafts alkylation/intermolecular macrolactonization of ortho-quinone methides with C3-substituted indoles. This protocol provides an array of enantioenriched macrodiolides with 16, 18 or 20-membered rings in moderate to good yields with high diastereoselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities through adjusting the length of the tether at the C3 position of indoles. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the formation of macrocycles is more favorable than that of 9-membered-ring lactones in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics. The potential utility of these intriguing chiral macrodiolide molecules is demonstrated in the enantiomeric recognition of aminols and chemical recognition of metal ions.

Supercritical CO2 was used for the production of extracts from Acacia dealbata flowers. Pressures from 10 to 35 MPa and temperatures from 35? to 55?C were studied to assess their influence on the yield, antiradical properties and composition of the volatiles. The use of ethanol as modifier was also evaluated. Operating at 30 MPa and 45 ?C with 10% ethanol, up to 15% of the ethanol extractables were obtained in 3 h. The selectivity towards alcohol type compounds decreased with time and was enhanced in a sequence of static extraction with pure and ethanol modified CO2 followed by a dynamic stage. The most active fractions showed ABTS radical scavenging activity of 0.22 g Trolox/g extract. Different mathematical models were used to describe the kinetic data. The most abundant compounds in the supercritical extracts were oxygenated triterpenes whereas in conventional ethanolic extracts the main constituents were aliphatic compounds.

Here, heterostructures of Bi2S3 quantum dots (QDs) doped onto ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method to exploit efficient photosensitizers with appropriate electronic states to enhance the transfer of electrons. The obtained Bi2S3-BiOCl showed highly efficient photocatalytic ability for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes. More oxygen vacancies are formed on the exposed 001 facet of the ultrathin BiOCl, which can effectively trap electrons and form O-.(2)- radicals. The cooperation between the BiOCl and the Bi2S3 QDs effectively separates photogenerated electron-hole pairs at the heterointerface and facilitates the cooperative actions of O-.(2)- radicals and holes, which brings about a desirable photocatalytic eciency for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols. This work highlights the synergistic effect of semiconductor QDs and two-dimensional materials on selective conversion processes and provides a new design paradigm using noble metal-free heteromaterials with high photocatalytic activity. This opens new possibilities for photocatalyst design using heteromaterials with high photocatalytic activity.
