Determination and utilization of optimal diesel/n-butanol/biogas derivation for small utility dual fuel diesel engine

This research aimed to investigate the impacts of engine load, n-butanol concentration, and biogas quantity on emissions and performance characteristics of a small utility compression ignition engine. The different engine load (20-100% of brake power), n-butanol concentration (0-20%) and biogas flow rate (0.5-2 kg/h) were used as input variables. The multi-criteria decision analysis based on response surface method techniques was employed to find the optimal values of engine working conditions fuelled with diesel/n-butanol/biogas fuel blends. In the optimization process, five objective functions (BTE, NOX, CO, UHC, and soot) were considered to be optimized based on the defined criteria. The addition of n-butanol in diesel has shown a favourable impact on biogas operated dual-fuel engine in terms of performance and emissions characteristics. The approach of desirability was applied to obtain the best operating conditions of the engine. The optimum value of engine load, n-butanol concentration, and biogas flow rate were found as 78.89%, 20%, and 1.37 kg/h, respectively. At this condition, the optimal value of BTE, UHC, CO, NOX, and smoke emissions were found to be 19.19%, 0.36g/kWh, 0.04%, 14.51g/kWh, and 22.32%, respectively. A high desirability value of 0.77 was obtained for the suggested condition, showing the efficiency of the derived models for response parameters.

Mitigation of nivalenol using alcoholic fermentation and magnetic field application

This study aimed at evaluating mitigation of nivalenol (NIV) in alcoholic fermentation with magnetic field application (MF). Mitigation was related to both the glutathione (GSH) redox molecule and the enzyme peroxidase (PO), which were synthesized by Saccharomyces cerevisiae US-05. Capability of core-sheath polyvinyl alcohol-polycaprolactone emulsion electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds in releasing strontium ranelate for bone regeneration

Morphological observations revealed that continuous nanofibers with a core/shell structure were successfully obtained and the fibers diameter increased as the SrR content rose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that SrR was molecularly distributed in the nanofibers and increasing the amount of the SrR decreased the crystallinity of the nanofibers. Moreover, the SrR release was regulated through the mechanism of Fickian diffusion and it was assumed as fast as possible in the samples with higher SrR content. The mesenchymal stem cell culturing showed improved cell proliferation by adding SrR and accelerating the expression of ALP, Runx2, Col I, and OCN genes. Besides, the SrR-loaded nanofibers improved bone formation of calvarial defects in a rat model as revealed by in vivo investigations.

Neutron scattering experiments were carried out on fully deuterated liquid methanol at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Cholesterol antagonism of alcohol inhibition of smooth muscle BK channel requires cell integrity and involves a protein kinase C-dependent mechanism(s)

Alcohol constricts cerebral arteries via inhibition of voltage/calcium-gated, large conductance potassium (BK) channels in vascular myocytes. Using a rat model of high-cholesterol (high-CLR) diet and CLR enrichment of cerebral arteries in vitro, we recently showed that CLR protected against alcohol-induced constriction of cerebral arteries. The subcellular mechanism(s) underlying CLR protection against alcohol-induced constriction of the artery is unclear. Here we use a rat model of high-CLR diet and patch-clamp recording of BK channels in inside-out patches from cerebral artery myocytes to demonstrate that this diet antagonizes inhibition of BK currents by 50 mM ethanol. High-CLR-driven protection against alcohol inhibition of BK currents is reversed following CLR depletion in vitro. Similar to CLR accumulation in vivo, pre-incubation of arterial myocytes from normocholes-terolemic rats in CLR-enriching media in vitro protects against alcohol-induced inhibition of BK current. However, application of CLR-enriching media to cell-free membrane patches does not protect against the alcohol effect. These different outcomes point to the involvement of cell signaling in CLR-alcohol interaction on BK channels. Incubation of myocytes with the PKC activators phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate or 1,2-dioctanoyl-sn-glycerol, but not with the PKC inhibitor Gouml 6983, prior to patch excision precludes CLR enrichment from antagonizing alcohol action. Thus, PKC activation either disables the CLR target(s) or competes with elevated CLR. Favoring the latter possibility, 1,2-dioctanoyl-sn-glycerol protects against alcohol-induced inhibition of BK currents in patches from myocytes with naive CLR. Our findings document that CLR antagonism of alcohol-induced BK channel inhibition requires cell integrity and is enabled by a PKC-dependent mechanism(s).

How is intolerance of uncertainty related to negative affect in individuals with substance use disorders? The role of the inability to control behaviors when experiencing emotional distress

We used structural equation modeling to assess the role of impaired emotional awareness and clarity (Impaired Awareness/Clarity) and inability to control behaviors when experiencing emotional distress (Inability to Control Behaviors) as an account for the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and negative affect (NA) in individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and healthy controls (HCs) used for comparison. One-hundred and thirty-one individuals with SUDs (42.75% female; mean age = 39.74 11.83) and 131 sex matched HCs (mean age = 40.02 12.34) entered the study. Participants completed questionnaires assessing the constructs of interest. Single-group analyses aimed to identify a baseline model for each group and test the hypothesized direct/indirect relations’ overall significance. Then, a multigroup analysis tested the invariance of model parameters between SUD and HC groups. The model in which IU had both direct and indirect relationships with NA through Impaired Awareness/ Clarity and Inability to Control Behaviors was a good fit to the data. The indirect relationship of IU with NA through Inability to Control Behaviors was significant and moderate-sized. The relationship involving Impaired Awareness/Clarity and Inability to Control Behaviors was small-sized and significant in single group analysis only. The multigroup analysis supported the association of IU with NA through Inability to Control Behaviors in the SUD group. Overall, our study highlights the crucial role of the Inability to Control Behaviors in SUDs and suggests that its association with IU might fuel NA in this population.

This review summarizes the preparation methods and applications of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials including aemgels, cryogels, xemgels, foams and sponges. The preparation of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials usually involves gelation and drying processes. The characteristics and influencing factors of three main drying methods including freeze, supercritical and evaporation drying are reviewed. In addition, the mechanism of physical and chemical crosslinking during gelation and the effect on the structure and properties of the porous materials in different drying methods are especially focused on. This contribution also introduces the application of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials in the fields of adsorption, biomedicine, energy storage, thermal insulation and sound absorption, flame retardancy and catalysis.

Gelatinization, pasting, and rheological properties of pea starch in alcohol solution

In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of different low concentrations of alcohol solution (5%-20%) on the gelatinization and pasting properties of pea starch. A rapid visco analyzer revealed that when the starch concentration was fixed, the viscosity of the starch paste decreased with increasing alcohol concentration. In addition, the texture analyzer results showed that compared to the hydrogel formed in water, the hardness of the gel formed by 15% starch in 10% alcohol increased approximately 2-fold (1696.4 g versus 928.1 g). Furthermore, the rheological results showed that the tan delta value of the gel formed under this condition was second only to that of 20% starch in water, which indicated the gel had a strong network structure. X-ray diffraction analysis showed an increased relative crystallinity of 15% starch gels formed in 10% alcohol (13.2%) compared to the hydrogel formed in water (12.2%). Our study will expand the knowledge of the gelatinization properties of starch in low concentrations of alcohol.

Changes in aroma components and potential Maillard reaction products during the stir-frying of pork slices

Stir-fried pork slices are kinds of traditional pork processing products in China, which are usually cooked at high temperature with different seasonings. Because of their special quality and flavor, these products gain consumers’ preference. However, there are few studies on their physicochemical properties, aroma composition and safety. In this study, the changes in basic components, aroma components and potentially hazardous substances during the stir-frying of pork slices were determined. The effects of the different ratios of fat meat to lean meat and vinegar on these indicators were evaluated, and the formation of potential Maillard reaction products was also analyzed. The results indicated that water content, chrominance values of L* and b* exhibited decreasing trends; a* value displayed a trend of decline first and then rising, while the fat content showed a rising trend during the processing. Appropriate stir-frying can promote the formation of aldehydes, while the content of acids, ketones, and terpenes decreased during processing. The change of alcohols has no obvious rule. Some sulfur compounds not found in raw meat were also detected. Different ratios of fat meat and lean meat changed the kinds of aroma components, while vinegar altered the types and their contents. Besides, the contents of acrylamide and 5-HMF changed significantly, and that of benzo(a)pyrene remained at a low level. The addition of vinegar can enhance the amount of acrylamide and 5-HMF but has no obvious effect on benzo(a)pyrene. Besides, 8 kinds of Maillard reaction products (acrylamide, 5-HMF, benzo(a)pyrene, 5-methylfurfural, pyrazine, 4-methylimidazole, pyrraline, and 5- hydroxymethyl – 2-furancarboxylic acid) were determined, and some of them were harmful to product quality and human health. The results showed that the processing time of pork slices should be controlled within 60 min.
