Divergent, Strain-Release Reactions of Azabicyclo[1.1.0]butyl Carbinols: Semipinacol or Spiroepoxy Azetidine Formation

Towards this goal, we have found that azabicyclo[1.1.0]butyl carbinols, readily obtained from the highly strained azabicyclo[1.1.0]butane (ABB), can undergo divergent strain-release reactions upon N-activation. Treatment with trifluoroacetic anhydride or triflic anhydride triggered a semipinacol rearrangement to give keto 1,3,3-substituted azetidines. More than 20 examples were explored, enabling us to evaluate selectivity and the migratory aptitude of different groups. Alternatively, treatment of the same alcohols with benzyl chloroformate in the presence of NaI led to iodohydrin intermediates which gave spiroepoxy azetidines upon treatment with base. The electronic nature of the activating agent dictates which pathway operates.

Association between environmental exposure to cadmium and risk of suspected non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Aim: We evaluated the associations between blood Cadmium (Cd) concentrations and risk of suspected NAFLD using nationally representative data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2008-2013, 2016 and 2017. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 12,099 adults for the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) analyses and 2,904 adults for the serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and fatty liver index (FLI) analyses, without significant alcohol consumption. Blood Cd concentrations were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Data were analyzed using survey logistic regression models. Results: Odds ratios (ORs) of suspected NAFLD increased significantly per unit of natural log-transformed blood Cd concentration (OR [95% (CI)], for ALT, overall: 1.50 [1.34, 1.68], men: 1.64 [1.40, 2.10] and women: 1.29 [1.08, 1.47]; for GGT, overall: 1.77 [1.33, 2.35], men: 2.28 [1.53, 3.41] and women: 1.27 [0.82, 1.97]; for FLI, overall: 1.84 [1.32, 2.57], men: 1.91 [1.24, 2.94] and women: 1.58 [0.87, 2.86]; for HSI, overall: 1.19 [1.07, 1.32], men: 1.17 [1.01, 1.37] and women: 1.14 [0.99, 1.32]). The blood Cd concentrations associated with risk of suspected NAFLD were lower than those previously reported (for ALT, > 0.64 mg/L, for GGT, > 1.41 mg/L, for FLI, > 0.96 mg/L, and for HSI, > 1.41 mg/L). Conclusions: This study suggests that the reference level of blood Cd should probably be lower than the previously recommended value to prevent adverse health effects due to Cd exposure. Hydrogen solubility in bio-based furfural and furfuryl alcohol at elevated temperatures and pressures relevant for hydrodeoxygenation

Biomass conversion into fuels and added-value chemicals, in high yield and with good selectivity, is still a great issue and an attractive research topic. The design and the optimization of defunctionalisation processes require accurate kinetic models that take into account the solubility of various gases in the bio-based chemicals present in the process. Some of the promising platform bio-based compounds that can be further converted to valuable chemicals are furfural and furfuryl alcohol. Hydrogen solubility in furfural and furfuryl alcohol was studied at three temperatures from the range (323.15-423.15) K and at pressures up to 25 MPa. Hydrogen dissolves better in furfural than in furfuryl alcohol, for about 15 %. The obtained experimental data were modelled using the Soave-Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson cubic equations of state, as well as the PC-SAFT equation of state. The parameters of the PC-SAFT equation of state for pure compounds were defined for furfural and furfuryl alcohol. The binary interaction parameters, crucial for the prediction of phase-equilibrium behaviour, were determined for both examined systems. The interaction parameters obtained for the cubic equations of state were temperature dependent, while the interaction parameters optimized for the PC-SAFT equation of state were almost the same at all three temperatures for each studied system. The average absolute percentage deviations between the measured equilibrium pressures and those calculated using the mentioned models were under 4 %.

Drinking and alcohol-related problems among at-risk adolescents: The role of protective behavioral strategies

Introduction: Protective Behavioral Strategies (PBS) are an alcohol-specific cognitive-behavioral strategies that may be employed before, during and/or after drinking, in order to reduce alcohol consumption and related consequences, particularly in the at-risk populations. Previous research on PBS was limited to North American college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of PBS use in a sample of Polish adolescents attending Special Educational Centers (SEC). Method: Data were collected from a nationwide sample of 12-19 year-old (Mean = 15.8; SD = 1.22) students attending SEC in Poland (N = 1585; about 33% female). The self-administered anonymous questionnaires were completed on-site in the SEC. PBS were measured by the authors adaptation of the PBSS-20. Alcohol-related problems were assessed by the Polish adaptation of the measures used in the MINI-KID tool. Alcohol use was measured by a single question on drinking frequency. These two latter variables were measured in the past year timeframe. Hierarchical regression models were used to test the main and interaction effects of employing PBS (total and subscales scores) on alcohol-related problems, after adjusting for demographics (gender, family composition and type of SEC) and alcohol use. Results: The majority (about 94%) of study participants reported employment of some PBS. Regression analyses indicated that PBS use was associated with reduced risk of alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. We found that PBS significantly moderated the relationship between alcohol use and alcohol-related problems, for PBS total scale (F-change (1,1555) = 15.96, p < .001) and one of the PBS subscale: Limiting/Stopping Drinking (F-change (1,1555) = 4.80, p < .029). Findings were discussed within the results of PBS literature and resilience theory framework. Conclusion: The use of PBS helps to reduce alcohol-related problems among adolescents attending SEC. Implementation of tailored interventions that teach PBS among vulnerable adolescents may be an effective way to strengthen adolescent self-protection, reduce risky alcohol use and related negative consequences. Critical Analysis of Laboratory Testing Methodologies When Interpreting Conflicting Results at Autopsy

Toxicological analysis is an important diagnostic component of a postmortem examination and may involve both antemortem and postmortem specimens. Here, we present a case in which an antemortem specimen, when reanalyzed in the forensic toxicology laboratory, resulted in values that contradicted the reported values from the medical record and required further investigation. This case involves a 51-year-old man decedent with a medical history of chronic alcohol abuse. His antemortem urine drug screen, performed upon admission to an emergency department, was negative. His serum blood alcohol level at presentation was reported as 0.960 g/dL and, repeated 4 hours later, was 0.500 g/dL with a comment indicating that there was significant lipemia interfering with the results. At autopsy, the antemortem blood sample collected from the hospital, postmortem blood, and vitreous humor samples were analyzed and all 3 samples were found to be negative for ethanol. The hospital laboratory used an enzymatic assay for ethanol detection, which is known to be impacted by lipemia, and the forensic laboratory used head-space gas chromatography, which is not impacted by lipemia. This highlights the need to critically analyze laboratory testing methodologies when interpreting conflicting results at autopsy.

Alcohol consumption and risk of stomach cancer: A meta-analysis

Stomach cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. The relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of stomach cancer remains unclear. Epidemiology studies investigating this relationship have shown inconsistent findings. A meta-analysis was performed to explore the association between alcohol consumption and increased stomach cancer risk. Eighty-one epidemiology studies, including 68 case-control studies and 13 cohort studies, were included in this study. A significant association was found between alcohol consumption and increased risk of stomach cancer (OR = 1.20, 95% CI 1.12-1.27). To explore the source of the significant heterogeneity (p < 0.05, I-2 = 86%), analysis was stratified by study type (case-control study and cohort study), control type (hospital-based control and population-based control), gender (male, female, and mix), race (White and Asian), region (United States, Sweden, China, Japan), subsite of stomach cancer, and type of alcohol. The stratified analyses found that region and cancer subsite are major sources of the high heterogeneity. The inconsistent results in different regions and different subsites might be related to smoking rates, Helicobacter pylori infection, obesity, and potential genetic susceptibility. The positive association between drinking and increased risk of stomach cancer is consistent in stratified analyses. The dose-response analysis showed a clear trend that a higher daily intake of alcohol is associated with a higher risk of stomach cancer. Experimental study of temperature profile and gas-liquid heat transfer in flame spread over jet fuel under longitudinal air flow

The rectangular pools with the same length of 100 cm but different widths of 4 and 20 cm are used to conduct experiments of flame spread over jet fuel of RP-3. The direction of longitudinal air flow is same and opposite to direction of flame spread respectively. Six air flow velocities 0.45, 0.88, 1.3, 1.73, 2.15 and 2.57 m/s are employed. The spatial temperature distributions and convective heat dissipation at pool bottom are examined using thermocouples. The heat loss is negligible for 10 mm-thick fuel layer, but it is evident for 3 mm-thick fuel layer. The integral method is proposed to calculate the flame radiation imposed to subsurface flow region. The gas-liquid heat transfer model including liquid-phase convection, flame radiation and convective heat dissipation is established for calculating energy balance involving flame spread over RP-3. The calculated heat fluxes follow well with experimental measurements, regardless of direction and magnitude of air flow. The current findings possess potential application and practical guidelines for fire prevention of liquid fires under longitudinal air flows. In order to restrict flame spread, it is a feasible method to cut off liquid convection or shield flame radiation.

Effect of Mouthrinses on Water Sorption and Solubility of Flouride-Releasing Restorative Materials

Objective: This study aimed to investigate water sorption/solubility behavior of glass ionomer cement-based-containing restorative materials. Methods: A total of 21 specimens for each material (Riva Self Cure. Riva Light Cure, GCP Glass Fill) were prepared using a teflon ring (10×2 mm). These specimens were stored in a desiccator for 24 hours at 37 +/- 1 degrees C and the weight of each sample was measured using a sensitive balance. Afterwards, the specimens were stored in an incubator containing distilled water, mouthrinse with alcohol, and mouthrinse without alcohol at 37 +/- 1 degrees C for one day. The specimens were later dried to a constant mass in a desiccator, and each specimen was measured using a digital electronic caliper. Data were statistically analyzed (p<0.05). Results: Data were evaluated using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests. Water sorption values were found to be significantly higher for the resin-modified glass ionomer cement group than for the high-viscosity glass ionomcr cement (HVGIC) group in all the three different media (p<0.05). HVGIC material showed similar water sorption values for all three media. Conclusion: Compositions of restorative materials play key roles in their water sorption/solubility in different areas. Habits such as tobacco and alcohol consumption can be factors that can help to the development of disseminated histoplasmosis mainly in immunocompetent patients. Clinical manifestations can include fever, weakness, weight loss, hepatosplenomegaly, mucocutaneous lesions, and ulcer oral lesions. Oral lesions represents a commonly manifestation in the disseminated form of the disease, and it is more frequently observed in immunocompromised patients, mainly on HIV-positive patients. In this study, we presented five cases of disseminated histoplasmosis on HIVnegative patients diagnosed with lesions located in oral cavity and we performed a literature review about cases of disseminated histoplasmosis lesions in head and neck region on HIV-negative patients associating possible factors that may contribute to lesions formatting.
