Enhanced flux and fouling resistance forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer

Although forward osmosis (FO) technology has been widely adopted for water treatment, it still faces great challenges, including low permeability and fouling problem. Herein, a novel forward osmosis membrane was developed with a stable, uniform and defect-free polyvinyl alcohol/polydopamine coated zeolitic imidazolate framework (PVA/PDA@ZIF-8) hybrid selective layer to simultaneously enhance its transport property and fouling resistance. The prepared FO membrane exhibits improved water flux without losing the selectivity, since the PDA@ZIF-8 provide additional preferential passageway for water transporting while hinder the diffusion of salt. The optimized membrane shows a higher water flux than pristine PVA membrane (14.2 vs. 8.7 L m(-2) h(-1) in FO mode, 24.3 vs. 14.8 L m(-2) h(-1) in PRO mode) with a reasonable selectivity considering as J(s)/J(w) value (0.44 vs. 0.4 g L-1 in FO mode, 0.38 vs. 0.33 g L-1). Moreover, the dynamic fouling experiments with organic foulants (protein and polysaccharide) indicate that the prepared membrane exhibits strong antifouling property and excellent permeation recovery ability (>95.0%) due to the optimized surface property. This study opens a new avenue for treatment wastewater by developing a forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Preparation and Characterization of Polyvinyl Alcohol-Chitosan/Cerium Hydrogel with Significant Antibacterial Activity

Traditional wound dressings have some major deficiencies, including poor antibacterial ability, low exudate absorption rate and dry environment. These defects can be addressed by the prepared hydrogels in this study, which can provide a moist and cool environment for wound healing. Polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan/cerium (PVA-Cs/Ce) composite hydrogels are prepared by a freeze-thaw method and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the effects of chitosan/cerium (Cs/Ce) complexes with different contents on properties, including mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, swelling ratio, and thermal stability are investigated. SEM images indicate that the composite hydrogels have a good three-dimensional pore structure. Compared with the pure PVA hydrogel, the composite hydrogels show better swelling properties and more suitable water vapor transmission rate (2504 g m(-2).day) by adding Cs/Ce complexes. And the elongation at break of the hydrogel with a ratio of 5:3 (PVA: Cs/Ce) is the highest value of 567%. In the bacteriostatic circle experiment, PVA-Cs/Ce composite hydrogels exhibit a pronounced inhibitory effect against two bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli). These results suggest that these composite hydrogels have great potential as wound dressings.

Production and characterization of shape memory polymeric nanocomposite materials

Polymers are macromolecular materials that simple molecules (monomers) come together with chemical bonds and form them. The industrial use area of polymers is increasing due to many advantages of them such as mechanical properties, easy formability, lightweight, and low cost. Properties of smart (capable of reacting to an external effect) polymers; because of external effects such as magnetic field, electric field, temperature, and pH, they can change their shape and various mechanical properties. Areas such as aviation, construction, electronics, and medical can be given as examples to the usage areas of such materials. In this study, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer was used as a matrix in nanocomposite materials. New types of shape memory nanocomposites materials were obtained by using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphene oxide (GO) produced by the Hummers method as fillers. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) devices were used to examine the thermal characterization of materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) were used for structural characterization analysis. In addition, chemical characterization of the materials was investigated using energy diffusion X-ray analysis (EDX) and surface morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The shape memory performances of the produced nanocomposite materials were determined by the shape recycling tests. It is examined the effect of fillers on the shape memory performance, structural and thermal properties of nanocomposite materials. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultrasonic effects on the headspace volatilome and protein isolate microstructure of duck liver, as well as their potential correlation mechanism

In spite of the high added value and tremendous output from duck processing industries, duck liver (DLv) is underutilized and a major factor is related to its prominent off-flavor perception which hampers the consumption and processing attributes. This work was designed to investigate the impact of low-frequency ultrasound (US) pretreatments on the headspace volatilome evolution of DLv and its isolated protein (DLvP) microstructure, aiming at exploring the potential of US technology to inhibit off-flavor perception and possible mechanisms behind. Results suggested that US pretreatment resulted in decreased lipid oxidation and off-flavor perception, simultaneously without significantly causing physicochemical influence including texture, pH and color. US induced obvious tertiary structural changes of DLvP, as revealed by the intrinsic fluorescence and surface hydrophobicity (H0), whereas the SH, S-S, secondary structure and molecular weight of DLvP remained unaffected, suggesting the presence of molten globule state (MG-state) under ultrasonic conditions. Besides, the headspace contents of flavor compounds, mainly aldehydes and alcohols, were significantly decreased whereas acids were increased. Multivariate analysis suggested an obvious US-induced effect on the volatilome evolution of DLv samples. Discriminant analysis recognized the aroma compounds including aldehydes and alkenals as the major contributors leading to the change of olfactory characteristics of DLv after ultrasonic treatment. Correlation analysis demonstrated the positive relationship between the volatile markers variation and the increased H0 values, a characteristic attribute of MG-state protein. The results obtained in this work suggested that US technology matched with suitable parameters could be a very promising approach to modulate the off-flavor perception of liver products by altering DLvP conformation.

Gastrodin alleviates seizure severity and neuronal excitotoxicities in the rat lithium-pilocarpine model of temporal lobe epilepsy via enhancing GABAergic transmission

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Temporal lobe epilepsy remains one of the most drug-resistant focal epilepsy, leading to enormous healthcare burden. Among traditional herb medicine, some ingredients have the potential to treat seizure and alleviate the neuronal excitoxicity. The dried rhizome of Gastrodia elata Blume has been used to treat convulsive disorder, dizziness, dementia and migraine in eastern Asia. Aim of the study: To determine whether gastrodin, an active ingredient of Gastrodia elata Blume, can reduce lithium-pilocarpine induced seizure severity and neuronal excitotoxicity and explore the underlying mechanism. Materials and methods: We divided the Sprague-Dawley rats into an experimental group (gastrodin group) and a control group (Dimethyl sulfoxide, vehicle group) and performed the behavioral analysis and electroencephalography to determine the effect of gastrodin on the seizure severity induced by lithium-pilocarpine injection. Nissl-stained histopathology elucidated the degree of rat hippocampal neuronal damage as markers of acute and subacute neuronal excitotoxicity. Besides, the Western blotting of dissected hippocampus was carried out to demonstrate the protein expression involving GABAergic transmission and metabolic pathway. Results: Gastrodin reduced the acute seizure severity in lithium-pilocarpine-induced seizure model. In electroencephalography recording, gastrodin exerted inhibitory action on epileptiform discharge. Compared with control group, gastrodin exhibited neuroprotective effect against seizure related hippocampal neuronal damage at acute and subacute stages. The Western blotting showed that gastrodin reversed the degradation of GABA(A) receptor after pilocarpine-induced seizures. Conclusions: In the experimental seizure model, gastrodin showed anti-seizure and neuroprotective abilities. Enhancing the expression of GABA(A) receptor plays an important role in its antiepileptic mechanism. The results offer a new insight of developing new antiepileptic drugs from traditional Chinese medicine.

Study on the treatment of sudden cadmium pollution in surface water by a polymer enhanced ultrafiltration process

The removal of cadmium(ii) pollution in surface water by a polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) process was investigated. Three water soluble polymers, chitosan (CTS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylate sodium (PAAS), were selected for this study. Of the three polymers, PAAS had strong interactions with Cd2+, and the PEUF achieved a high removal of Cd2+; therefore, PAAS was used as a complexing agent for the simulated cadmium pollution experiment. Experiments were performed as a function of the aqueous pH, polymer/Cd2+ ratio (P/M), ionic strength and humic acid. Under optimum experimental conditions, the Cd2+ removal rate reached 100%. pH was the main factor affecting removal of Cd2+, which decreased to 60% at a pH of 4. The Cd2+ removal was found to decrease as NaCl and HA were added. The analysis showed that the mechanism of NaCl could be a compressed electric double layer, while the mechanism of HA and H+ was competitive complexation. Finally, UF membrane fouling, the dissociation of PAAS-Cd and the regeneration of PAAS were investigated. The results showed that the higher P/M was, the lower the pH, the higher the HA concentration, and the more serious the UF membrane fouling were. The dissociation rate of PAAS-Cd reached 99.8% at a pH of 2.5. When the P/M was 5, the removal rate of Cd reached 99.6% with the addition of 20% new PAAS in the regenerate. This result showed that the PEUF process could be a promising method for removing Cd pollution in surface water.

Perceived reward from using cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis and concurrent use: A smartphone-based daily diary study

Introduction: Smoking cigarettes under the influence of alcohol or cannabis is associated with perceived pleasure. However, it is unclear whether these changes in perceived reward impact the extent of concurrent use of cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis. The current study investigated if self-reported changes in perceived reward from concurrent use of cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis are related to the extent of concurrent use in real-world contexts using a smartphone-based Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) study. Methods: The sample included 126 diverse young adult smokers in the San Francisco Bay Area who reported current alcohol or cannabis use at baseline (M = 22.8 years, 50.8% male, 40.5% sexual minority, 39.7% Non-Hispanic White). Participants completed an online baseline survey and 30 days of smartphone-based daily EMA surveys of cigarette, alcohol, and cannabis use. The baseline assessed self-reported changes in perceived pleasure of smoking cigarettes while using alcohol or cannabis separately. EMA surveys included detailed questions about concurrent use (i.e., the extent of smoking while using another substance) covering the previous day. A total of 2,600 daily assessments were analyzed using mixed models. Results: Higher perceived pleasure from smoking cigarettes while drinking alcohol or using cannabis at baseline were both associated with a greater extent of concurrent use of cigarettes with alcohol (b = 0.140; SE = 0.066; t = 2.1; p = .035) and cannabis (b = 0.136; SE = 0.058; t = 2.4; p = .019) on a given day. Conclusions: Results suggest that perceived reward from concurrently using cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis is associated with the extent of concurrent use. Findings can inform tailored smoking cessation interventions.

Conservation of ‘Palmer’ mango with an edible coating of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and beeswax

Mango is a tropical fruit presenting intense postharvest metabolism. In storage at room temperature, it presents a short shelf life due to the high respiratory rate, and consequent ripening, which limits the marketing period in distant regions. This study evaluated the effect of edible coatings of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and beeswax in concentrations of 10, 20, and 40% in ‘Palmer’ mangoes stored for 15 days at 21 degrees C. The coatings controlled ripening, maintaining peel and pulp colors, firmness, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, sugars, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, beta-carotene, and antioxidant activity. Also, they reduced weight loss, oxidative stress, and the anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) incidence, without inducing alcohol dehydrogenase activity, which suggests that coated fruit did not ferment. Treatment with 20% beeswax was the most suitable for industrial applications, increasing in six days the mangoes shelf life.

Abnormal volatile and normal stable bipolar resistive switching characteristics of hybrid nanocomposites: Morphology-defects-property ‘Relationship

The characteristics of nano-fillers in a polymer matrix have a significant influence on the microstructural, thermo-mechanical, optical, and conductivity properties of organic-inorganic nanocomposites. In this study, we investigated the influence of inorganic component – ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on the characteristics and properties of PVA-ZnO nanocomposites which have been applied as an insulation layer in a resistive switching (RS) device. Three nanocomposites originating from three different types of ZnO NPs exhibit different RS characteristics: Abnormal volatile RS is observed with the similar to 20-nm-sized spherical-like NPs (Z1) and 15-20-nm-sized mixed shaped NPs (Z2), whereas normal nonvolatile bipolar RS is observed with the 50-150-nm-sized hexagonal rod-like NPs (Z3). The concentration and size of the intrinsic defects of the ZnO NPs as well as the thickness of the PVA-ZnO interface are responsible for the different charge transport paths, operating voltage ranges, and ON/OFF switching ratios of the memory devices. Simultaneously, the distinct sizes and morphologies of the ZnO NPs can affect the nanoholes among the PVA chains and induce various fractional free volumes in the nanocomposites. It may modify the conductivity of the nanocomposite layer or the resistance ratio of the memory devices. Understanding the influence of ZnO NPs size, morphology, and defects on the characteristics of RS of PVA-ZnO nanocomposites can help in the selection and management of functional applications, especially in the data storage field. Childhood psychopathology mediates associations between childhood adversities and multiple health risk behaviours in adolescence: analysis using the ALSPAC birth cohort

Background Childhood adversity strongly predicts adolescent multiple health risk behaviours (MRBs) such as alcohol/tobacco use, self-harm and physical inactivity, and both adversities and MRBs are associated with premature mortality and several chronic health conditions that are among the leading causes of death in adults. It is therefore important to understand the relationship between adversities and MRBs and what could mediate any association. The aim of this study was to explore whether childhood psychopathology mediates associations between adversities and MRBs. Methods Participants were young people in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) (N = 5,799). Using structural equation modelling, we explored the associations between adversities before 9 years and MRBs at age 16 years. We also explored potential mediating pathways through dimensional psychopathology measured by the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire subscales at age 12 years. Results There were strong positive associations between adversities and MRBs (beta .25, 95% CI 0.20, 0.31, p < .001) suggesting that each additional adversity is associated with a 0.25 increase in number of MRBs out of 13 total risk behaviours. We found robust evidence of mediating pathways from adversities through conduct problems (beta .05, 95% CI 0.03, 0.06, p < .001), hyperactivity/inattention (beta .02, 95% CI 0.01, 0.03, p < .001) and peer relationship problems (beta -.02, 95% CI -0.03, -0.02, p < .001) to MRBs. Conclusions Increased conduct problems and hyperactivity/inattention appear to partially explain the relationship between adversities and MRBs. Peer relationship problems also appear to reduce the association between adversities and MRBs, and further research is needed to understand how to encourage peer connectivity without increasing risk of MRBs. These results suggest that interventions aimed at reducing MRBs among those exposed to childhood adversities could focus on prevention of behavioural problems. But sometimes, even after several years of basic chemistry education, it is not easy to form a clear picture on how they govern reactivity! 821-41-0, you can contact me at any time and look forward to more communication.
