Ag is a potential low-cost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst in alk. condition, which is important for the zinc-air batteries. Here, we report that an Ag based single atom catalyst with heteroatom coordination. Ag1-h-NPClSC, has been synthesized and shown much improved performance towards ORR by manipulating the coordination environment of the Ag center. It shows a high half wave potential (0.896 V) and a high turnover frequency (TOF) (5.9 s-1) at 0.85 V, which are higher than the previously reported Ag based catalysts and com. Pt/C. A zinc-air battery with high peak power d. of 270 mW·cm-2 is fabricated by using the Ag1-h-NPClSC as air electrode. The high performance is attributed to (1) the hollow structure providing good mass transfer; (2) the single atom metal center structure providing high utility of the Ag; (3) heteroatom coordination environment providing the adjusted binding to the ORR intermediates. D. functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the energy barrier for the formation of OOH*, which is considered as the rate determine step for ORR on Ag nanoparticles, is lowered on Ag1-h-NPClSC, thus improving the ORR activity. This work demonstrates that the well manipulated Ag based single atom catalysts are promising in electrocatalysis.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogs have been classified as endocrine disruptors via binding to nuclear receptors. Two novel bioassays, BLYrARS and BLYrPRS, were developed for rapid detection of agonistic and antagonistic activities of BPA and five of its analogs binding rat androgen receptor (rAR) and rat progesterone receptor (rPR). The reporter bioassay was based on two autonomously bioluminescent strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, recombined with a bacterial luciferase reporter gene cassette (lux) that can produce autofluorescence, regulated by the corresponding hormone response element acting as the responsive promoter. The bioluminescent signal is autonomous and continuous without cell lysis or addition of exogenous reagents. The AR agonist R1881 could be detected at 4 h with a half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of ∼9.4 nM. The PR agonist progesterone could be determined at 4 h with an EC50 of ∼2.74 nM. None of the sixteen bisphenols presented agonistic activities against rAR and rPR. However, thirteen BPs were rAR antagonists and eleven BPs acted as rPR antagonists with different potency. The BLYrARS and BLYrPRS bioassay characterized by automated signal acquisition without addnl. manipulations or cost can be applied for simple and rapid detection of agonistic and antagonistic activities of BPs and other compounds acting as agonists or antagonists of rAR and rPR. Based on data derived by use of this bioassay endocrine-disrupting activities of some BPA analogs are more potent than BPA.

Loose nanofiltration membranes show great potential to realize the effective separation of dyes and salts but still show low capacity for treating textile wastewater due to low membrane flux. In this work, a high-flux hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane (HFNFM) for the separation of dyes and salts was fabricated through a simple one-step non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. A carboxylated polyethersulfone (PES-COOH) was synthesized by the polycondensation based on Williamson reaction using diallyl bisphenol sulfur as a commoner followed by the thio-ene reaction with thioglycolic acid. Then PES-COOH was blended with polysulfone (PSF) for hollow fiber spinning based on the NIPS method. The effects of the ratio of PSF to PES-COOH on the membrane structure and performance were studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), water contact angle and zeta potential measurements. Upon optimization, the PSF/PES-COOH HFNFM displayed a water flux of 159.6 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, and a rejection of 99.2% for Congo red at a dye concentration of 100 mg/L and operating pressure of 0.1 MPa. With the effective dye-salt fractionation which was comparative to literature reports, the membrane showed unprecedentedly high flux, which can be attributed to the double layer finger-like structure and hydrophilic PES-COOH as additives. The membrane also presented excellent stability and antifouling property during the treatment of simulated textile wastewater.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogs are frequently detected in human daily necessities and environmental media. Placental thyroid hormone plays an important role in fetal development. Herein, we followed the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) to explore the toxic mechanisms of BPA and its analogs toward placental thyroid hormone receptor (TR). First, the TOX21 database was used, and the interactions between BPA analogs and the ligand-binding domains (LBDs) of two subtypes of TR (TRα and TRβ) were subjected to in silico screening using mol. docking (MD) and mol. dynamics simulation (MDS). Fluorescence spectra and CD showed that BPA and its analogs interfere with TRs as a mol. initiation event (MIE), including static fluorescence quenching and secondary structural content changes in TR-LBDs. Key events (KEs) of the AOP, including the toxicity induced in placental chorionic trophoblast cells (HTR-8/SVneo) by an inverted U-shaped dose effect and changes in ROS levels, were tested in vitro. BPA, BPB, and BPAF significantly changed the expression level of TRβ, and only BPAF significantly downregulated the expression level of TRα. In conclusion, our study contributes to the health risk assessment of BPA and its analogs regarding placental adverse outcomes (AOs).

Huang, Chaonan published the artcileAn efficient mixed-mode strong anion-exchange adsorbent based on functionalized polyethyleneimine for simultaneous solid phase extraction and purification of bisphenol analogues and monoalkyl phthalate esters in human urine, Name: 4,4′-Sulfonyldiphenol, the publication is Microchemical Journal (2022), 107536, database is CAplus.

In this study, a mixed-mode strong anion-exchange (MAX) adsorbent was developed based on amine-functionalized poly(divinylbenzene) (PDVB) functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) followed by quaternization with glycidyl Ph ether (named as PDVB-QPEI). Fourier Transform IR spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiments indicated that the PDVB-QPEI was successfully synthesized with a BET sp. surface area (SBET) of 118.5 m2 g-1, pore volume of 0.37 cm3 g-1, and pore size of 16.41 nm. High ion-exchange capacity (IEC) of 0.57 mmol g-1 was achieved. The important parameters influencing SPE efficiency were optimized, including adsorbent mass, pH of the sample, type and volume of washing solvent and eluent. The practical capability of this novel PDVB-QPEI MAX adsorbent was tested for solid phase extraction and purification of bisphenol analogs and monoalkyl phthalate esters (MPEs) in urine samples. Outstanding extraction and cleanup efficiency were achieved simultaneously for urine samples due to high selectivity of the PDVB-QPEI adsorbent for bisphenol analogs and MPEs. Recovery values ranged from 80.1% to 102.4% with precision (relative standard devition, n = 3) below 6% for these blank urine samples spiked at different levels. The limit of detections (LODs) obtained by HPLC-DAD were in the range of 3-9 ng mL-1. The PDVB-QPEI is superior to com. adsorbents (Oasis HLB, C18 and Oasis MAX). These results demonstrated the great potential application of the PDVB-QPEI adsorbent in routine anal. of bisphenol analogs and MPEs in complex samples.

Bisphenols have endocrine-disrupting effects, which may disrupt Hb (Hb) homeostasis and lead to anemia. However, the effects of bisphenols on anemia remain unknown. Therefore, we assessed the effects of single- and multiple-exposure to bisphenols on Hb levels and anemia of pregnant women. The study involved 2035 pregnant women from Guangxi Zhuang Birth Cohort in China. Generalized linear regression, principal component anal. (PCA), quantile g-computation (Qgcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were performed to examine the effects of serum bisphenols on Hb levels and the risk of anemia. After adjustment, elevated bisphenol A (BPA) levels were correlated with decreased Hb concentrations (β = -0.51; 95%CI: -0.92, -0.10) in the first trimester, and these correlations were more sensitive in mothers of males. Compared with the low-exposure group, bisphenol B (BPB) levels in the high-exposure group led to a 1.52 g/L (95%CI: -3.01, -0.03) decrease in Hb levels in the second trimester; tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) levels in the high-exposure group led to a higher the risk of anemia in the third trimester (OR = 1.46; 95%CI: 1.07, 1.99); bisphenol F (BPF) in the high-exposure group led to lower Hb levels (β = -2.42; 95%CI:-4.69, -0.14) in mothers of male fetuses in the third trimester. Qgcomp showed that elevated levels of bisphenol mixture was correlated with (β = -1.42; 95%CI: -2.61, -0.24) decrease in Hb levels in the second trimester. PCA revealed a neg. association between PC2 and Hb levels in the first trimester (β = -0.89; 95%CI: -1.61, -0.17). Similarly, a neg. relationship was observed between PC1 and Hb levels in the third trimester among mothers with male fetuses (β = -1.00; 95%CI: -1.94, -0.06). Prenatal exposure to single and mixed bisphenols may decrease Hb levels and increase the risk of anemia during pregnancy, the associations may be greater in mothers with male fetuses than those with female fetuses.

A series of multiblock sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SPAES) with various block lengths and predictable ion exchange capacity were synthesized from 4,4′-difluorodiphenyl sulfone, 4,4′-dihydrodiphenyl sulfone and 4,4′-biphenol by one-pot and two-pot polymerization 1H-NMR and FTIR spectra confirmed the structure that sulfonic acid groups were introduced precisely on the poly(arylene ether sulfone)s by post-sulfonation which resulted in controllable sulfonation degree. The proton exchange membranes (PEMs)-based SPAES displayed excellent dimensional, thermal, antioxidant stability, proton conductivity and mech. properties (maximum tensile stress >35 MPa). Thermogravimetric anal. indicated the prepared SPAES began to degrade above 310°C. The effects of polymerization processes, those were, one-pot hydrophobic segment process, one-pot hydrophilic segment process and two-pot process, on the properties of polymers were investigated. The proton conductivity and microphase separation of SPAES PEMs increased in order of those prepared by one-pot hydrophobic segment process, two-pot process and one-pot hydrophilic segment process. The highest conductivities of SPAES synthesized by the above processes under 80°C and 100% relative humidity were 213 (MS4), 297 (MB3) and 360 mS·cm-1 (MQ2), resp.

Traditional high-throughput methods for identification of chems. with liver tumor promotion potentials are based on established cancer cell lines, and rapid and cost-effective high-throughput screening assays in whole organisms are presently lacking. In this study, a transgenic zebrafish liver cancer model was employed to develop a method that could be used to identify chems. with liver tumor promotion effect quickly and accurately. The method consisted of three parts, including exposure preparation, exposure process and image acquisition. In brief, after chem. exposure for 7 days, 96-well plate exposure system for zebrafish larvae was assessed by microplate reader. Then, the liver cancer promoting potential chems. were evaluated by field area and field average intensity of fluorescence. The results were further validated by conducting histopathol. examination Our data demonstrated that the high-throughput screening assay developed in this study was reproducible and could be used to rapidly screen chems. with liver tumor promoting potentials by using tris-(2-chloropropyl)-phosphate (TDCIPP) as a pos. control. Furthermore, some other pos. chems. found in previous studies and environmental compounds were assessed using the established method. Results indicated that 86.7% of the pos. chems. and five environmental compounds out of seventeen compounds could enhance liver tumor progression.

This study investigates the effects of weak intermol. interactions on the flame retardancy of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polyphosphazene flame retardant. Monodispersed poly-(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol) (PZS) microspheres with different diameters were synthesized by controlling the reactant concentration Simulation studies revealed that the weak intermol. interactions between PZS and PET predominantly include strong hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The weak intermol. interactions imparted high thermal stability, even in the molten state, and PZS microspheres with smaller diameters achieved stronger hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions with PET. The diameter of the PZS microspheres influenced the limiting oxygen index value and UL-94 rating. Increasing the carbon residue alone was insufficient to promote the flame retardancy, and the weak intermol. interactions played an important role. Thus, stronger weak-intermol.-interactions are beneficial for realizing a material with superior flame retardancy and anti-dropping performance.

Some studies indicate that Black women have higher exposure to multiple non-persistent endocrine disrupting chems. (EDCs) than white women, but little is known about correlates of exposure to EDC mixtures Using baseline data from a prospective cohort study of reproductive-aged Black women (N = 751), we characterized profiles of EDC mixtures and identified correlates of exposure. At baseline, we quantified biomarkers of 16 phthalates, 7 phenols, 4 parabens, and triclocarban in urine and collected covariate data through self-administered questionnaires and interviews. We used principal component (PC) anal. and k-means clustering to describe EDC mixture profiles. Associations between correlates and PCs were estimated as the mean difference (β) in PC scores, while associations between correlates and cluster membership were estimated as the odds ratio (OR) of cluster membership. Personal care product use was consistently associated with profiles of higher biomarker concentrations of non-persistent EDCs. Use of nail polish, menstrual and vaginal products (e.g., vaginal powder, vaginal deodorant), and sunscreen was associated with a mixture of phthalate and some phenol biomarkers using both methods. Current vaginal ring use, a form of hormonal contraception placed inside the vagina, was strongly associated with higher concentrations of high mol. weight phthalate biomarkers (k-means clustering: OR = 2.42, 95% CI = 1.28, 4.59; PCA: β = -0.32, 95% CI = -0.71, 0.07). Several dietary, reproductive, and demog. correlates were also associated with mixtures of EDC biomarkers. These findings suggest that personal care product use, diet, and contraceptive use may be sources of exposure to multiple non-persistent EDCs among reproductive-aged Black women. Targeted interventions to reduce exposure to multiple EDCs among Black women are warranted.
