Polyoxetanes anchoring a pendant spacer-separated mesogen at the tertiary-like C-3 carbon of the oxetane unit were prepared by cationic ring-opening polymerization of the corresponding oxetane derivatives The resulting polymers were liquid-crystalline substances showing textures assignable to the nematic or smectic mesophase over a wide temperature range from about 260 °C to room temperature These mesogens also behaved in the manner similar to that of the mesogens in the analogous polyoxetanes attached by a Me side chain at the quaternary C-3 carbon, although the less bulky polymer backbone in the present work indicated a somewhat higher isotropic phase-transition temperature than that of the methyl-substituted analogs. In both types of the polyoxetanes, their mesophase patterns were influenced by the core structure and alkoxy tail length in the pendant mesogen, but not by the bulkiness of the second side chains, H and CH3, attached at the C-3 carbon of the polyoxetane unit.

Merrill, G. N. research published 《 The gas-phase reactivity of epichlorohydrin with hydroxide》, the research content is summarized as follows. The reaction of hydroxide with epichlorohydrin in the gas phase was studied with ab initio calculations Three mechanisms were examined, each corresponding to nucleophilic attack at a different carbon atom of the substrate. Through attack at the ring methylene position was favored, whereas attacks at the alkyl methylene or ring methine positions have larger activation energies. These results are consistent with exptl. results found in the literature.

Merrill, G. N. research published 《 A computational study into the reactivity of epichlorohydrin and epibromohydrin under basic conditions in the gas phase and solution》, the research content is summarized as follows. Ab initio MO calculations were carried out on epibromohydrin (EBH) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) in an attempt to elucidate their reactivity with respect to a hard nucleophile, hydroxide. These systems were modeled in both the gas phase and a polar solvent under basic conditions. In the gas phase, a direct displacement mechanism (nucleophilic attack at the C1 position) was operative for EBH, while an indirect pathway (nucleophilic attack at the C3 position and subsequent intramol. displacement) was followed for ECH. In an acetone solution, only the indirect displacement mechanism occurs. An electrostatic argument is advanced to account for this behavior in polar solution

In addition, the compound demonstrated dose-dependent efficacy in the in vivo pharmacol. neutrophil infiltration “air pouch” model in rodents after oral administration. Li, Peijun;Zbieg, Jason R.;Terrett, Jack A. research published 《 A Platform for Decarboxylative Couplings via Photoredox Catalysis: Direct Access to Carbocations from Carboxylic Acids for Carbon-Oxygen Bond Formation》, the research content is summarized as follows. Within the past decade, photoredox catalysis has enabled numerous decarboxylative transformations to couple carboxylic acids with a variety of partners primarily through carbon-centered radical intermediates. Herein, we describe a method for the construction of carbon-oxygen bonds using a dual photoredox/iodine(III) platform directly from simple carboxylic acids and alcs. This activation platform enables the direct utilization of readily available acids and alcs. without the need for prefunctionalization and works broadly across primary, secondary, and tertiary carboxylic acid substrates. We propose that this transformation proceeds via a radical-polar crossover event to generate a discrete carbocation intermediate which is intercepted by a nucleophilic coupling partner, thereby overcoming the electronically mismatched nature inherent in previous radical-based decarboxylative couplings. The application of this mechanistic approach toward addnl. nucleophiles is also demonstrated using water, enabling a direct decarboxylative-hydroxylation reaction. Finally, we demonstrated that the decarboxylative etherification can be applied to a peptide substrate, selectively functionalizing serine over other nucleophilic residues, providing support for future potential bioconjugation applications.

Legnani, Luca;Prina-Cerai, Gabriele;Delcaillau, Tristan;Willems, Suzanne;Morandi, Bill research published 《 Efficient access to unprotected primary amines by iron-catalyzed aminochlorination of alkenes》, the research content is summarized as follows. Primary amines are essential constituents of biol. active mols. and versatile intermediates in the synthesis of drugs and agrochems. However, their preparation from easily accessible alkenes remains challenging. Here, the authors report a general strategy to access primary amines from alkenes through an operationally simple iron-catalyzed aminochlorination reaction. A stable hydroxylamine derivative and benign sodium chloride act as the resp. nitrogen and chlorine sources. The reaction proceeds at room temperature under air; tolerates a large scope of aliphatic and conjugated alkenes, including densely functionalized substrates; and provides excellent anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity with respect to the amino group. The reactivity of the 2-chloroalkylamine products, an understudied class of amphoteric mols., enables facile access to linear or branched aliphatic amines, aziridines, aminonitriles, azido amines, and homoallylic amines.
