Evaluation of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis as protective culture for active packaging of non-fermented foods: Creamy mushroom soup and sliced cooked ham

An innovative edible coating, made from food grade polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and gelatin hydrolysates (HGel), was evaluated as a carrier of Lactococcus lactis acting as anti-listeria protective culture for refrigerated foods. The coating was applied on a compostable polylactic acid film surface and its anti-listeria activity was evaluated at 4 degrees C in a liquid culture medium and in solid agar, inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes. The best results were obtained in agar, exerting a bactericide effect, whereas in the liquid medium the coating had bacteriostatic behaviour. Furthermore, the active coating was applied to the surface of bags or separator liners made from polylactic acid. Its effectivity was evaluated with creamy mushroom soup (bags) and sliced cooked ham (separator liners) previously inoculated with L. monocytogenes and stored at 4 degrees C. Results showed that the coating was effective at inhibiting pathogen growth; however, it did not display a bactericide effect in the foods. In addition, L. lactis remained viable in all experiments conducted in this study. The acidification produced by L. lactis, because of the generation of organic acids, did not compromise the sensory properties of the sliced cooked ham after 16 days of refrigerated storage. In contrast, consumers perceived a mushroom soup acidification because of a greater decrease in pH than the sliced cooked ham. This study demonstrates that a food grade polyvinyl alcohol polymer blended with gelatin hydrolysates can be used as a carrier of protective cultures of L. lactis to increase the microbiological safety of refrigerated foods.

Lifetime alcohol intake, drinking patterns over time and risk of stomach cancer: A pooled analysis of data from two prospective cohort studies

Alcohol consumption is causally linked to several cancers but the evidence for stomach cancer is inconclusive. In our study, the association between long-term alcohol intake and risk of stomach cancer and its subtypes was evaluated. We performed a pooled analysis of data collected at baseline from 491 714 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition and the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for incident stomach cancer in relation to lifetime alcohol intake and group-based life course intake trajectories, adjusted for potential confounders including Helicobacter pylori infection. In all, 1225 incident stomach cancers (78% noncardia) were diagnosed over 7 094 637 person-years; 984 in 382 957 study participants with lifetime alcohol intake data (5 455 507 person-years). Although lifetime alcohol intake was not associated with overall stomach cancer risk, we observed a weak positive association with noncardia cancer (HR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.00-1.06 per 10 g/d increment), with a HR of 1.50 (95% CI: 1.08-2.09) for >= 60 g/d compared to 0.1 to 4.9 g/d. A weak inverse association with cardia cancer (HR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.87-1.00) was also observed. HRs of 1.48 (95% CI: 1.10-1.99) for noncardia and 0.51 (95% CI: 0.26-1.03) for cardia cancer were observed for a life course trajectory characterized by heavy decreasing intake compared to light stable intake (P-homogeneity = .02). These associations did not differ appreciably by smoking or H pylori infection status. Limiting alcohol use during lifetime, particularly avoiding heavy use during early adulthood, might help prevent noncardia stomach cancer. Heterogeneous associations observed for cardia and noncardia cancers may indicate etiologic differences.

Heating temperature dependence of molecular characteristics and biological response for biomass pyrolysis volatile-derived water-dissolved organic matter

The utilization of biomass pyrolysis volatile-derived water-dissolved organic matter (WOM, often called wood vinegar) determines sustainable recycling of biomass. Further, pyrolysis temperature significantly controls the cracking of biomass components, resulting in various molecular compositions and biological responses of WOM. Although it has been widely used in the agriculture, the relationship between molecular compositions and biological responses affected by heating temperature is still unclear. Here, it was observed that the WOM concentration increased with increasing temperatures and the pyrolysis of 1 g biomass can generate similar to WOM with 36.24 mg C. Moreover, with increasing pyrolysis temperatures, the generated WOM consisted of more phenols but fewer alcohols, furans, adds, and ketones, and demonstrated characteristics of higher aromaticity and lower m/z molecular weight. Due to the enhanced polarity, high temperatures promoted the solubility of WOM. Germination tests show that low pyrolysis temperatures-derived WOM (< 400 degrees C) with large-molecular-weight and low oxygen-containing (low O/C-wa) promoted plant growth, while high temperatures-derived WOM (> 400 degrees C) with small-molecular-weight and high oxygen-containing (high O/C-wa) inhibited growth. These results suggest that WOM can be separately collected at different pyrolysis temperatures to achieve sustainable recycling of pyrolysis volatile. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mental Disorders in Peyronie’s Disease: A Swedish Cohort Study of 3.5 Million Men

Purpose: Studies have shown that men with Peyronie’s disease often suffer from psychological problems, but the psychiatric burden of this disorder remains largely unknown. We assessed risks of a range of psychiatric outcomes in a population based Swedish cohort comprising 3.5 million men. Materials and Methods: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study based on Swedish national registers. A total of 8,105 men diagnosed with Peyronie’s disease and 3.5 million comparison subjects from the general Swedish population were selected, and followed up with for diagnosed psychiatric outcomes including substance use disorder, alcohol misuse, anxiety disorder, depression, and self-injurious behaviors. Risks of psychiatric outcomes were estimated with Cox regressions and additionally adjusted for birth year. Results: Men with Peyronie’s disease had increased risks of being diagnosed with substance use disorder (HR 1.4, 95% CI 1.1-1.9), no excess risk of alcohol misuse (HR 0.9, CI 0.8-1.1), but elevated risks of anxiety disorder (HR 1.9, CI 1.6-2.2), depression (HR 1.7, CI 1.5-2.0), self-injurious behaviors (HR 2.0, 95% CI 1.7-2.3) as well as any psychiatric outcomes (HR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-1.5). The risk estimates were slightly decreased when adjusted for birth year. A limitation of the study was that we had no information about Peyronie’s disease diagnoses assigned before year 1997. Stay-at-Home Orders During the COVID-19 Pandemic, an Opportunity to Improve Glucose Control Through Behavioral Changes in Type 1 Diabetes

OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown on glycemic control and associated factors in people living with type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS An observational evaluation from a self-reported questionnaire on behavioral changes and glycemic information from flash glucose monitoring (FGM) during the lockdown in 1,378 individuals living with type 1 diabetes who used a French dedicated nationwide web application (CoviDIAB). RESULTS The main outcome was the change of the mean glucose level 2 months before and 1 month after the lockdown. We found that mean glucose improved from 9.1 +/- 1.7 mmol/L to 8.7 +/- 1.7 mmol/L (P < 0.001). Factors associated with better glycemic control were a decrease of alcohol consumption (odds ratio [OR] 1.75 [95% CI 1.04-2.94]), an increase in the frequency of FGM scans (OR 1.48 [1.04-2.10]) and in the number of hypoglycemia events (OR 1.67 [1.13-2.46]), and an easier diabetes control perception (OR 1.71 [1.18-2.49]). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that lockdown has a positive impact on glycemic control in people with type 1 diabetes. Independent association of marijuana use and poor oral hygiene with HPV-negative but not HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinomas

Background Sexual behavior is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive head and neck cancer, whereas tobacco and alcohol use are associated with HPV-negative cancer. A case-control study was designed to investigate additional demographic and behavioral factors independently associated with these distinct oral cancers. Methods From 2011 to 2014, 249 newly diagnosed oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cases were matched (1:2) on age, gender, and self-identified race to 498 controls without a cancer history attending the outpatient otolaryngology clinic at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Cases were stratified by detection of high-risk HPV DNA and RNA in tumors. Demographic and behavioral data were collected using an audio computer-assisted self-interview, and associations with HPV-positive versus HPV-negative OSCCs were investigated by use of univariable and multivariable conditional logistic regression models. Results After adjustment for oral sexual behavior, the odds of HPV-positive cancer decreased with the patient’s years of education. Annual income, tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, marijuana smoking, and poor oral hygiene were not associated with HPV-positive OSCC. In contrast, the odds of HPV-negative OSCC increased independently with decreased annual income, decreased with a high number of marijuana hit-years, and increased with fewer than annual dental visits after adjustment for lifetime tobacco and alcohol use. Sexual behavior and education were not associated with HPV-negative OSCC. Conclusions The distinct risk-factor profiles for HPV-positive and HPV-negative OSCC are confirmed and extended in this case-control study, thus supporting 2 principal etiological pathways for OSCC development. Lay Summary Sexually acquired human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is an established cause of tonsil and base of tongue cancers. This study compared and contrasted risk factors for HPV-positive and HPV-negative oral cancers. Low number of years of education and sexual behavior are associated with HPV-positive cancer. In contrast, low annual income, infrequent dental visits, and tobacco and alcohol use are associated with HPV-negative cancers. Long-term marijuana use appears protective for HPV-negative cancer. Public health efforts to address these modifiable risk factors may prevent oral cancer.

Promotion effect of La on oxygen vacancy formation over Zn-Cr based catalyst for isobutanol synthesis from syngas

A series of catalysts were designed and synthesized via doping lanthanum into ZnCr oxide to realize efficient synthesis of isobutanol from syngas. By applying a combination of characterizations (XRD, TEM, EPR, XPS and in situ FT-IR) and DFT calculations, the effects of lanthanum promoter on catalyst structure and catalytic performance were investigated. With the doping of lanthanum, ZnCrLax composite oxides with a novel catalyst structure were constructed, in which Zn atom at tetrahedron site was partly substituted by doping La atom. The presence of this structure enhanced the formation of more oxygen vacancy sites and further benefitted the CO activation. In addition, formate intermediate was easier to generate and exhibited superior stability over ZnCrLax surface thus leaded to remarkably promoted catalytic activity. The ZnCrLa0.05 catalyst achieved optimum total alcohols selectivity of 61%, and the fraction of isobutanol reached as high as 24.6% under CO conversion of 23%.

Hydrogen-free hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and 2-methyl-furan over Ni and Co-promoted Cu/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts

Catalytic transformation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and 2-methylfuran without H-2 supply toward transfer hydrogenation process using 2-propanol as a H-2 source was systematically investigated over the bimetallic NiCuAl and CoCuAl catalysts in comparison with the monometallic CuAl, NiAl, and CoAl catalysts. The interaction between Cu and Ni or Co resulted in a simplicity of the reduction behavior of Ni and Co species observed in H-2-TPR experiments. It was evident from pyridine adsorption FTIR analysis that the formation of bimetallic NiCu and Co-Cu alloys apparently improved the stronger Lewis acidic sites. The influences of reaction temperature and time were examined and optimized to maximize the yields of furfuryl alcohol and 2-methylfuran. The highest two major products yield and selectivity with lower by-products were obtained over the NiCuAl and CoCuAl catalysts compared with the CuAl and NiAl catalysts. The superior performance of the bimetallic catalysts was attributed to the stronger Lewis acidic centre on the catalyst surface. The CoCuAl catalyst was found to have lower catalyst deactivation and carbon deposition among the CuAl and NiCuAl catalysts under H-2-free atmosphere.

Water-induced shape memory behavior of poly (vinyl alcohol) and p-coumaric acid-modified water-soluble chitosan blended membrane

Shape memory polymer (SMP), composites and blends need to be prepared to improve the properties or obtain new functions of SMPs. In this work, we successfully prepared p-coumaric acid-modified water-soluble chitosan (M-Cs) and poly (vinyl alcohol) blended membrane (PVA/M-Cs) by a simple solution casting method to enhance its physico-chemical properties, including water-induced shape memory behavior. M-Cs were synthesized from native chitosan (Cs) using carbodiimide chemistry. After the addition of M-Cs into the PVA polymer matrix, it exhibited better water-induced shape memory behavior and shape recovery ratio reach nearly 100 %. Moreover, the water contact angle value declined after the addition of Cs or M-Cs in to the PVA polymer matrix. Based on these findings, the respective blended membranes will be able to broaden the applications of SMPs in many sectors, especially in the biomedical field, which requires water as the main stimulus.
