Control of curing rate and exothermicity during processing of thermosetting composite materials is essential in order to minimize the formation of internal stresses leading to mech. and dimensional defects in the samples, especially in thick composite samples. It was recently proposed that sequential heat release, an approach based on the kinetic control of the curing sequence of dual-curing thermosets, would enable a step-wise release of the reaction heat and therefore a better control of conversion and temperature profiles during the crosslinking stage. In this article, it is shown exptl. proof of this concept obtained by means of an instrumented mold that can be used for the processing of small samples with and without carbon fiber reinforcement. Safe processing scenarios have been defined by numerical simulation using a simplified two-dimensional heat transfer model and validated exptl.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are an emerging class of material actuators. LCE undergo macroscopic dimensional changes when subjected to a stimulus. The large stimuli-response of LCE is associated with thermotropic disruption of order. Historically, comparatively high temperatures are required to disrupt orientation in LCE to achieve meaningful work output. Here, we introduce an approach to prepare LCE via thiol-Michael/thiol-ene reactions that actuate at or below ambient temperature Alignment was imparted to the LCE by mech. alignment and 3D printing. The LCE materials detailed here achieve strains of 40% with a maximum deformation rate of 6.5% °C-1. The functional utility of the tunability of the thermotropic response of these materials is illustrated in reconfiguration triggered via body heat and sequential actuation of a multi-material element.

International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives published new progress about Acrylic polymers, polyester-polythioether- Role: RCT (Reactant), SPN (Synthetic Preparation), RACT (Reactant or Reagent), PREP (Preparation). 7575-23-7 belongs to class alcohols-buliding-blocks, name is Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), and the molecular formula is C17H28O8S4, Application of Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate).

Russo, Claudio published the artcileAdhesive properties of thiol-acrylate-epoxy composites obtained by dual-curing procedures, Application of Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is thiol acrylate epoxy composite adhesive dual curing system; thermal mech property.

Composite materials were prepared using a thiol-acrylate-epoxy dual-curing system filled with boron nitride (BN) agglomerates. The adhesive properties obtained with two different acrylate ratios (ra) were tested to characterize differences and applicability of final thermosets. The effect of bondline thickness, BN wt% and curing procedure on the adhesive strength was evaluated for both acrylate ratios ra by means of lap-shear tests. Materials with viscous intermediate (ra = 0.2) results were observed to have the best performance reaching a maximum of almost 5 kN with 20 wt% of BN. On the other hand, materials with an intermediate gelled network (ra = 0.5) showed a high accuracy in dimension control but lower values of adhesive strength were obtained. A decrease of adhesive strength with the increase of thickness was found for both ra, while the increase of BN wt% lead to higher adhesive strength. The beneficial effect of dual-curing processing on the adhesive properties of liquid intermediate materials was also exptl. demonstrated.

Suvarli, Narmin published the artcileThiol-Functional Polymer Nanoparticles via Aerosol Photopolymerization, Name: Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is thiol polymer nanoparticle aerosol photopolymerization property; aerosol photopolymerization; polymer nanoparticles; thiol-ene polymerization; thiol-functional nanoparticles.

Spherical, individual polymer nanoparticles with functional -SH groups were synthesized via aerosol photopolymerization (APP) employing radically initiated thiol-ene chem. A series of various thiol and alkene monomer combinations were investigated based on di-, tri-, and tetrafunctional thiols with difunctional allyl and vinyl ethers, and di- and trifunctional acrylates. Only thiol and alkene monomer combinations able to build cross-linked poly(thio-ether) networks were compatible with APP, which requires fast polymerization of the generated droplet aerosol during the photoreactor passage within a residence time of half-minute. Higher monomer functionalities and equal overall stoichiometry of functional groups resulted in the best nanoparticles being spherical and individual, proven by SEM. The presence of reactive -SH groups in the synthesized nanoparticles as a basis for post-polymerization modifications was verified by Ellman’s test.

Kizhakidathazhath, Rijeesh published the artcileFacile Anisotropic Deswelling Method for Realizing Large-Area Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomers with Uniform Structural Color and Broad-Range Mechanochromic Response, COA of Formula: C17H28O8S4, the main research area is anisotropic deswelling viscoelasticity liquid crystal elastomer.

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) are soft and dynamic photonic elements that couple the circularly polarized structural color from the cholesteric helix to the viscoelasticity of rubbers: the reflection color is mech. tunable (mechanochromic response) over a broad range. This requires uniform helix orientation, previously realized by long-term centrifugation to ensure anisotropic deswelling, or using sacrificial substrates or external fields. The present paper presents a simple, reproducible, and scalable method to fabricate highly elastic, large-area, millimeters thick CLCE sheets with intense uniform reflection color that is repeatably, rapidly, and continuously tunable across the full visible spectrum by stretching or compressing. A precursor solution is poured onto a substrate and allowed to polymerize into a 3D network during solvent evaporation Pinning to the substrate prevents in-plane shrinkage, thereby realizing anisotropic deswelling in an unprecedentedly simple manner. Quant. stress-strain-reflection wavelength characterization reveals behavior in line with theor. predictions: two linear regimes are identified for strains below and above the helix unwinding threshold, resp. Up to a doubling of the sample length, the continuous color variation across the full visible spectrum repeatedly follows a volume conserving function of the strain, allowing the CLCE to be used as optical high-resolution strain sensor.

Ohzono, Takuya published the artcileImpact of Crystallites in Nematic Elastomers on Dynamic Mechanical Properties and Adhesion, Recommanded Product: Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is crystallite nematic elastomer dynamic adhesion.

Crystallite formation in crosslinked polymeric networks can generally affect their mech. properties, resulting in a higher modulus and strength than those expected from pure entropic elasticity. However, the mechanism by which crystallite formation displaces the soft elasticity of nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) is unknown. In this study, a series of main-chain nematic LCEs are investigated to clarify how their stress-strain responses are modulated by temperature-dependent crystallite formation. With increasing content of alkyl chain segments that drive crystallite formation, the higher modulus along with a hysteretic stress-strain response overlays the soft elasticity. Entropic elasticity with low hysteresis recovers in isotropic states at higher temperatures The crystallite formation ability is accompanied by an aspect of the shape memory effect, which can enhance the adhesion force through annealing in contact before detachment. The present system demonstrates that the time-dependent stress-strain response of crosslinked polymers can be dynamically tuned by controlling the balance between the crystalline, liquid crystalline, and entropic nature of the chain components. Tuneability has profound implications for dynamic mech. applications.
