Biswas, Kaushik published the artcileDemonstration of self-healing barrier films for vacuum insulation panels, HPLC of Formula: 7575-23-7, the main research area is epoxy self healing barrier film vacuum insulation panel.

This article presents the demonstration of a rapid self-healing system for barrier films of vacuum insulation panels (VIPs). The proposed self-healing films can improve the durability of VIPs by in-situ remediation of film defects. The self-healing concept has seen limited applications in buildings, and the current work is the first proposed application to VIPs. VIPs can achieve an order-of-magnitude lower thermal conductivity than traditional foam and fibrous building insulations. The key to the ultra-low thermal conductivity of VIPs is an evacuated core that is fully-encapsulated within impermeable barrier films. Evacuation of the core eliminates the gas conductivity, which is the dominant contributor to heat transfer in traditional insulation materials. Thus, the integrity of the VIP barrier films is critical The proposed self-healing system can seal accidental cuts and punctures to the barrier films to maintain their impermeability and, hence, the low conductivity of VIPs. Here, the proof-of-principle of a two-part chem. reaction-based self-healing system is presented, including the evaluations of reaction kinetics using chem.-structure anal. and time-dependent viscosity change, and demonstration of self-healing performance via puncture tests in a vacuum pump apparatus Multiple chem. combinations of epoxies and curing agents were investigated with respect to reaction kinetics and chem. stability. Epon 8111 as an epoxy and poly(ethyelenimine) (PEI) as a curing agent were identified as the optimum chems. with a curing time of 22 s as evaluated by an agitating stirrer experiment 1H NMR (NMR) spectra anal. identified the curing reaction occurring mainly via the Michael amine-acrylate addition The measured time-dependent viscosity change of diluted Epon 8111 and PEI solutions agreed well with a gelation model of typical epoxy curing kinetics, which predicted a very fast reaction rate for the undiluted chems. Finally, puncture tests of small-scale film specimens containing Epon 8111 and PEI in a vacuum pump system demonstrated that the self-healing reaction happens very rapidly and the healed films maintain the system vacuum.

Wu, Jun published the artcileLiquid Crystal Elastomer Metamaterials with Giant Biaxial Thermal Shrinkage for Enhancing Skin Regeneration, Related Products of alcohols-buliding-blocks, the main research area is liquid crystal elastomer metamaterial thermal shrinkage skin regeneration; actuation temperature; biaxial actuation stress/strain; hemostatic patch; liquid crystal elastomer metamaterials; skin regeneration.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are a class of soft active materials of increasing interest, because of their excellent actuation and optical performances. While LCEs show biomimetic mech. properties (e.g., elastic modulus and strength) that can be matched with those of soft biol. tissues, their biointegrated applications have been rarely explored, in part, due to their high actuation temperatures (typically above 60 °C) and low biaxial actuation performances (e.g., actuation strain typically below 10%). Here, unique mechanics-guided designs and fabrication schemes of LCE metamaterials are developed that allow access to unprecedented biaxial actuation strain (-53%) and biaxial coefficient of thermal expansion (-33 125 ppm K-1), significantly surpassing those (e.g., -20% and -5950 ppm K-1) reported previously. A low-temperature synthesis method with use of optimized composition ratios enables LCE metamaterials to offer reasonably high actuation stresses/strains at a substantially reduced actuation temperature (46 °C). Such biocompatible LCE metamaterials are integrated with medical dressing to develop a breathable, shrinkable, hemostatic patch as a means of noninvasive treatment. In vivo animal experiments of skin repair with both round and cross-shaped wounds demonstrate advantages of the hemostatic patch over conventional strategies (e.g., medical dressing and suturing) in accelerating skin regeneration, while avoiding scar and keloid generation.

He, Taoyu published the artcileA study on electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal films doped with barium titanate nanoparticles prepared by nucleophile-initiated thiol-ene click reaction, Computed Properties of 7575-23-7, the main research area is barium titanate nanoparticle doped polymer dispersed liquid crystal film.

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films doped with barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles were prepared by nucleophile-initiated thiol-ene click reaction. The effects of BTO content and reaction temperature on the electro-optical properties of PDLC were explored. It is found that the size of liquid crystal droplets is bigger when the amount of BTO increases. As the BTO content increases, the transmittance first rises and then falls, while the voltage that drives the liquid crystal orientation first drops and then rises. The electro-optical properties of PDLC doped with BTO show a similar changing trend with the change of reaction temperature However, when the reaction temperature becomes higher, the influence of BTO on the electro-optical properties of PDLC becomes greater. Doping BTO helps to obtain PDLC films with good electro-optical properties.

Peng, X. published the artcileThiol-Ene Photopolymerization under Blue, Green and Red LED Irradiation, Synthetic Route of 7575-23-7, the main research area is thiol ene photopolymerization blue green red LED irradiation.

Photopolymerization allows fast production of materials with special properties; however, a short wavelength of light is required for most com. photoinitiating systems and the oxygen inhibition effect for the free radical polymerization has limited possible applications. Herein, we investigate thiol-ene photopolymerization with various types of ene derivatives and thiols using our previously reported photoinitiator 2-(4-methoxystyryl)-4,6-bis(trichloromethyl)-1,3,5-triazine (triazine) alone or in combination with rubrene or 1,4-bis(isopropylamino)anthraquinone (SB36) as the photoinitiating systems to trigger polymerization under irradiation with blue, green, and red LEDs. An anal. of photopolymerization kinetics and the effects of different light irradiation conditions, chem. structures, composites of ene and thiol monomers, and air on the thiol-ene photopolymerization reaction are presented. Specifically, rates of photopolymerization of all thiol-ene formulations decrease as the wavelength of irradiation increases and show no significant difference when polymerization occurs under air or in laminate. Mech. properties and homogeneity of the photocured samples are analyzed and demonstrated that all thiol-ene formulations appear to have a homogeneous network. Regarding mech. properties, with a lower amount of thiol incorporated in the network, the storage modulus and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the photocured product increased. Storage stability of thiol-ene formulations is also studied and 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (5HNQ), a naturally derived dye derivative, is found to be successful in inhibiting premature gelation in thiol-ene systems without significantly affecting the photopolymerization performance.

Daneshmehr, Shahla published the artcileThe surface modification of boron nitride particles, Application of Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is boron nitride surface modification.

The use of coupling agents to enhance the thermal conductivity of composites of epoxy and boron nitride (BN) has been investigated. Two types of BN particles, lightly aggregated platelets with an average size of 6μm and agglomerates with an average size of 120μm, have been used. Different proportions of these BN particles, up to a volume percentage of approx. 34%, were mixed with a stoichiometric epoxy-thiol system and cured either isothermally or non-isothermally. The cure kinetics was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, and the thermal conductivity of isothermally fully cured samples was measured. The effect of surface treatment of the particles was extensively investigated, with respect to the characteristics of the particles themselves, the cure kinetics and the thermal conductivity of the cured composites. The BN particles were treated with a silane coupling agent, both with and without previously treating the BN with a sodium hydroxide solution IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric anal. were used to assess whether or not the silane had been attached to the BN particles, and the effect of the surface treatment on the cure kinetics was studied. Although the cure kinetics suggested that the surface treatment was more effective for the 6μm particles than for the 120μm agglomerates, it did not generally lead to an increase in the thermal conductivity, while SEM showed that the coupling agent was not attached to the BN particles. It is concluded that truly platelet-shaped particles are necessary for effective surface treatment.

Realization of muscle-like actuation for a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) requires mesogen alignment, which is typically achieved/fixed chem. during the synthesis. Post-synthesis regulation of the alignment in a convenient and repeatable manner is highly desirable yet challenging. Here, a dual-phase LCE network is designed and synthesized with a crystalline melting transition above a liquid crystalline transition. The crystalline phase can serve as an ”alignment frame” to fix any mech. deformation via a shape memory mechanism, leading to corresponding mesogen alignment in the liquid crystalline phase. The alignment can be erased by melting, which can be the starting point for reprogramming. This strategy that relies on a phys. shape memory transition for mesogen alignment permits repeated reprogramming in a timescale of seconds, in stark contrast to typical methods. It further leads to unusual versatility in designing 3D printed LCE with unlimited programmable actuation modes.

Rezaei, Farzad published the artcilePolymeric encapsulation of liquids via plasma surface polymerization, Application of Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is plasma surface polymerization polymer encapsulation.

This study introduces a new approach of liquid encapsulation using an atm. pressure plasma (APP). The technique is similar to interfacial polymerization, though here one phase is liquid (that contains unsaturated C=C bonds) and the other phase is plasma (that contains free radicals). When combined, the atm. plasma can induce surface polymerization of an acrylate-based liquid, resulting in a thin polymeric skin on top of the liquid Measurements with an at. force microscope and a spectroscopic ellipsometer estimate the thickness of the skin formed on top of di(ethylene glycol) diacrylate to be 40-50 nm. To demonstrate an application of this method, we encapsulated hemispherical capsules of reactive adhesives on a glass substrate. These adhesives are based on thiol-acrylate and thiol-acrylate-epoxy systems that react in the presence of a strong base catalyst. Plasma-induced polymerization can encapsulate, immobilize, and isolate sep. droplets of resin and the catalyst in a latent (nonreactive) state. These capsules remain latent until they rupture in response to phys. contact. A tensile testing machine reports an adhesive strength of ∼ 2 MPa for the formulated resins after curing. The capsules reported here may be useful for storing functional liquids for just-in-time release, such as contact-sensitive adhesives, on-demand lubricants, or self-healing agents.

Matsuda, Takeshi published the artcileRelease behavior of pH sensitive microcapsules containing corrosion inhibitor, Recommanded Product: Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is core shell pH sensitive microcapsules release behavior corrosion inhibitor.

A pH sensitive microcapsule (pH-MC) which can be decomposed in corrosive environments on metal substrates was synthesized and its release behavior was investigated. Ester chains which can be hydrolyzed under both alk. and acidic conditions were successfully introduced into the shell wall of the pH-MC. In sep. sets of experiments, cerium nitrate was encapsulated as a corrosion inhibitor, whereas aluminum nitrate was used to investigate the release property due its amphoteric nature. Study of the release behavior with the aluminum nitrate-containing pH-MC (Al-MC) demonstrated that the Al-MCs are sensitive to acidic and basic environments and are inactive in neutral environments. It was also found that hydrolysis of the ester chains occurred prior to release of the core materials. When immersed in an electrolyte with the cerium nitrate-containing pH-MC (Ce-MC), the open circuit potential (OCP) of a steel substrate showed a nobler potential than when immersed in an electrolyte without Ce-MC.

Jiang, Yaoyao published the artcileA High-Fidelity Preparation Method for Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuators, Name: Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is fidelity liquid crystal elastomer actuator.

Three-dimensional (3D) structural actuators based on monodomain liquid crystal elastomers (mLCEs) show a wide range of potential applications. A direct ink writing technique has been developed to print LCE structures. It is still a challenge to print high-precision 3D-mLCE actuators. Here, a method of wet 3D printing combined with freeze-drying is proposed. The coagulation bath is designed to restrain the nascent fiber disturbance of the capillary wave and weight by adjusting the ink viscosity and printing speed to control the LC mol. order, enabling uniform (B = 1.02) fibers with a high degree of orientational alignment (S = 0.45) of the mesogens. Furthermore, dynamic disulfide bond formation was used as the crosslinking point, which can allow the LCE network structure to be continuously cured to ensure adjacent layers are effectively bonded and, in combination with freeze-drying, produce the 3D-mLCE actuators of fidelity architecture (98.37 volume %) by printing. The actuators have excellent actuating strain (45.12%), and the dynamic disulfide bond makes them programmable. Finally, a printed bionic starfish and a printed bionic hand can easily grab regular and irregular objects. This work provides a feasible scheme for fabricating complex 3D-mLCEs with reversible changes in shape.

A facile photo-cured polycaprolactone (PCL)/polydopamine (PDA) nanocomposite is prepared via thiol-ene reaction. Owing to favorable light-to-thermal transfer of doped polydopamine nanoparticles (PDAPs) in composites, active photo-thermal actuation of the composite is achieved when subjected to simulated sunlight irradiation, the effects of sunlight intensity and PDAPs concentration on the composite’s surface temperature are studied systematically. Solid state plasticity is also achieved by activating the dynamic transesterification reaction within the same polymer network. More importantly, the composite also features sunlight-induced plasticity under a light intensity of 960 mW cm-2. Macroscopically, the flat permanent shape can be reconfigured to a new 3D permanent shape via simulated sunlight, and the reconfigured shape still exhibits excellent elasticity-based shape memory behaviors even after seven cycles of testing. Based on these special properties, the PCL/PDAPs composite is further used in the field of electronic devices. It is expected that the design of PCL-PDAPs composite can pave a simple pathway for the simplification of complex shapes and can be extended to fabricate light-operated actuators.
