Ginseng leaves contain high saponin composition and content, but are used less often than the root part. To develop a use for the leaves that exploits their properties, we studied ginseng leaves as the raw material of anti-aging cosmetics. This study highlights an assessment of the cellular activity and clin. efficacy of ginseng leaf extract, providing necessary information relevant to the development of new cosmetic products. Panax ginseng leaf purified extracts (PGLE) were shown to have high contents of Rb3 and Rb2. Rb3, the major chem. components of PGLE, promoted collagen synthesis though the activation of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in human skin fibroblast cells. In addition, the possibility of PGLE as an anti-skin-aging agent has also been clin. validated. Our anal. of the crow’s feet wrinkle showed that there was a decrease in the depth of deep furrows in the region of interest (RI) treated with PGLE lotion over an eight-week period. Based on these results, we suggest the possibility that PGLE, having high levels of Rb3, be considered as an attractive, wrinkle-reducing candidate for topical application.

It is intrinsically important to change the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) of surfactant mixture continuously by various devices in order to attain a large solubilization or ultimately complete mixing of hydrocarbon and H2O with less surfactant. The maximum solubilization of hydrocarbon (or H2O) was observed close to the surfactant phase separation at which the hydrophile-lipophile property of a surfactant mixture balances for a given system. The relative solubilities of H2O and oil in the surfactant phase change with the HLB of a surfactant mixture When the hydrophile-lipophile property of a surfactant is balanced, 3 phases, i.e., H2O, surfactant, and oil, coexist at low surfactant concentration When it is hydrophilic the solubility of water in the surfactant phase is infinite and an aqueous solubilized micellar solution + oil system is obtained. When it is lipophilic the solubility of oil in the surfactant phase is infinite and a reversed micellar solution of hydrocarbon + water system is obtained. These conceptual interpretations on the solubilization of oil and water in surfactant aggregates were embodied on the phase diagrams presented. The devices of cosurfactants, surfactants, and their combinations yielded very large solubilization. The hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) of a surfactant is certainly a functions of various variables such as surfactant composition, temperature, valence of the counterions, salt concentration, etc. It is argued that the HLB of a surfactant in the system and the HLB number of the surfactant should not be confused.

The phase behavior and phys. properties of a series of alkyl (C6, C8, C12 and iso-C8) monoglycerol ethers and 2-hydroxyalkyl (C6, C8, C12) monoglycerol ethers are presented. The binary phase diagram for the surfactants shows very little dependence on temperature It can be seen that as the alkyl chain length increases the tendency to form lamellar liquid crystalline phases increases. The branched alkyl chain shows no formation of lamellar phases even at high concentrations of surfactant. The difference in phase behavior between the surfactants is attributed to the variation in the critical packing parameter of the surfactants. The presence of an addnl. hydroxyl group in the alkyl chain causes temperature-independent solubility behavior. Ternary phase diagrams were prepared using dodecane as the oil phase. Hexyl glycerol ether was the only one of the alkyl glycerol ethers that was sufficiently water-soluble to determine the surface tension and CMC. The CMC was 15 mM and surface tension was 26 mN m-1.

A stability-indicating gas chromatog. flame ionization detection (FID) method for the quant. determination of ethylhexylglycerin (EHG) and its impurities in drug substance and drug product has been developed and validated. The developed method was also applied to related substances identification in the bulk sample. The chromatog. separation was performed on a fused silica capillary (DB-1, 30 m, 0.32 mm, and 0.25μm film thickness) column, and with a gradient technique. The column oven was programmed as follows: Initial column oven temperature, 60°C; ramped linearly to 280°C at the rate of 8°C/min; hold for 10 min. The runtime of anal. was 30 min. The injector and detector temperature was kept at 240°C and 260°C, resp. Nitrogen was used as a carrier gas with a constant flow rate of 2 mL/min. The split ratio was set at 20: Results and Discussion: The developed method was validated as per the ICH guidelines. The stability-indicating nature of the method has been proved by establishing peak purity and confirming the mass balance of all samples by subjecting them to stress conditions such as hydrolysis, oxidation, photolysis, and thermal degradation studies. The method was successfully applied to anal. of different bulk sample of EHG and its impurities. The proposed gas chromatog. coupled with FID method was also found to be specific and selective for the anal. of com. formulation samples.

The 1:3 mixture ratio of the caprylyl glycol and ethylhexylglycerin was chosen for further steps on inhibitory effect towards those prohibited microbial in cosmetics by evaluation at the concentration of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%, resp. It was found that the min. concentration inhibited S. aureus within 3 days, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and C. albicans within 1 day and A. niger within 28 days was 1.0%. As a facial skin condition, oily skin causes cosmetic problems, such as large pores, shiny appearance, and the feeling of greasiness and heaviness. Furthermore, extensive sebum production leads to common skin disorders such as acne vulgaris or seborrheic dermatitis. This study investigated the efficacy of sebum control tonics containing Juniperus communis fruit oil, Pelargonium graveolens oil, or niacinamide. The effects of Juniperus communis fruit oil, Pelargonium graveolens oil, and niacinamide on sebum excretion rates were investigated using Sebumeter. Sebum measurements (SebumeterSM 815, Courage & Khazaka, Köln, Germany) were made on the skin surface in three places by applying the sebumeter probe to the forehead after 10, 60, and 120 min from application of the tonic. The results indicated that the application of the tonic maintained a lower sebum secretion 10 min and 60 min after the application of the cosmetic, compared to those before it. However, a visible sebum-reducing efficacy after 2 h was reported only for tonic containing 0.25% Pelargonium graveolens oil and for the tonic with the addition of 3% niacinamide. After 2 h, the values of sebum measurements were 44 ± 5.13 a.u. and 58 ± 9.07 a.u., resp. Our results show that the tonic with the addition of 0.25% Pelargonium graveolens oil is the most effective in reducing sebum production

New alkyl ether carboxylates with a glyceryl spacer instead of ethylene glycol units had been synthesized using environmentally friendly methodol. A cascade synthesis of acetalization and hydrogenolysis was developed to obtain products containing an alkyl chain linked to a glycerol unit bearing a polar carboxylate head. These products were methylated by using tri-Me phosphate to observe the influence of a free or methoxylated alc. on the physicochem. properties. Finally, saponification gave the carboxylate anionic group of the new hydrotropes. Studying the amphiphilicity, the tolerance to sodium and calcium ions, and the solubilizing power of these bio-based ionic/nonionic hydrotropes has shown that they exhibited significantly improved application properties compared to similar petro-based hydrotropes.
