A low cost polyvinyl alcohol-glutaraldehyde cross-linked hydrogel beads were prepared and used for color removal from model industrial effluent containing Congo Red dye, using adsorption technique. The adsorption studies were performed using batch and fixed-bed reactor. Developed adsorbent, achieved adsorption capacity as high as similar to 34 mg of dye per gram of bead (condition: pH 6 and 45 degrees C). These beads were re-used for 7 times (many more runs possible) to remove the color from model dye effluent, without much loss in removal efficiency. Batch studies revealed a multi-layer adsorption governed by Harkins Jura model. Whereas the adsorption kinetics followed fractal like pseudo second order model, controlled by intraparticle diffusion phenomena. The fixed bed studies revealed steeper break through curves during adsorption operation when high dye influent rates and low bed height were used. This behaviour by the fixed bed reactor was best explained by the Thomas mathematical model. Studies further demonstrated that an external and internal mass diffusion become no more rate limiting during these experiments.

Structure, optical, and radiation shielding properties of PVA-BaTiO3 nanocomposite films: An experimental investigation

Developing different types of radiation shielding with certain specifications according to the type of radiation and method of application is essential. In this work, the radiation shielding, optical and structural features of PVA films containing BaTiO3 nanoparticles are investigated. The radiation shielding properties were measured experimentally with real gamma sources (Ba-133, Eu-152, and Cs-137). The efficiency calibration and spectrum analysis were performed with the Spectra Line Ultimate Gamma Lab packet program. Moreover, the results were compared with the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. Before radiation attenuation measurements, the prepared films were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structure of the BaTiO3 nanoparticles in the polymer matrix was studied with a scanning electron microscope (SEM, Merlin, Carl-Zeiss, LE0982). In addition, the optical properties of the polymer films were studied and presented. As the BaTiO3 content increases in the polymer matrix, transmission decreases and reflectance increases. Equally, as the BaTiO3 content increases, the value of a increases. For the shielding properties, the mass attenuation coefficient (mu(m)) increases as the BaTiO3 content increases from 0.65 to 3.57 wt%. There is a strong agreement between experimental results and the values obtained from the FLUKA Monte Carlo code.

Biotransformation of spent coffee grounds by fermentation with monocultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lachancea thermotolerans aided by yeast extracts

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) is a low-value solid food waste generated from the rising consumption of coffee. There is a need to transform the huge amount of SCG to value-added products such as alcoholic beverages. In this study, monocultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Merit and Lachancea thermotolerans Concerto were used to ferment SCG hydrolysates supplemented with yeast extracts. The addition of yeast extracts slightly enhanced the growth of both S. cerevisiae Merit and L. thermotolerans Concerto. In addition, the yeast extracts also increased the production of organic acids (e.g. succinic acid and acetic acid) and volatiles such as 2-phenylethyl alcohol and ethyl esters (e.g. ethyl octanoate and ethyl 2,4-hexadienoate). Furthermore, the supplementation of yeast extracts showed a more significant effect on the performance (e.g. yeast growth) of S. cerevisiae Merit than that on L. thermotolerans Concerto. Our results indicated that the addition of yeast extracts may provide a new strategy to enhance the transformation of SCG into a potential alcoholic beverage with flavor compound complexity.

ultrasonography of kidney and spleen in clinically healthy llamas and alpacas

Background: The ultrasonographic examination technique is a well-established, non-invasive diagnostic tool for diverse conditions in humans and different animal species. The purpose of our study was to describe ultrasonographic localisation, sonographic appearance and dimensions of the kidneys and spleen of clinically healthy llamas and alpacas. Differences between llamas and alpacas and the influence of sex and ages were investigated. Results of this study may aid veterinarians performing ultrasonography in diseased animals and the technique can be used for routine protocol screening. Results: Ultrasonography was performed in 135 clinically healthy, non-sedated llamas and alpacas. Screening was performed with a 6.6 MHz curve linear transducer with only alcohol as contact medium between the probe and unclipped skin. The kidneys could be imaged from the paralumbar region. The right kidney only was visualized when scanning from the right and the left kidney only from the left. While the left kidney appeared in sagittal view as an oval shape in most llamas and alpacas, in one third of animals the left kidney had a triangular shape. The L-shaped base of the spleen, with its homogeneous, echoic pattern, could be seen craniolateral to the left kidney. Anechoic areas displaying vessels inside the spleen and a thin echoic capsule surrounding the splenic tissue could be differentiated. While sonographic appearances of the examined organs showed no differences between llamas and alpacas, selected dimensions of both of kidney and spleen showed significant differences between species. In terms of age and sex, significant differences in respect of kidney size could be found only in alpacas. Sex seemed to have no influence on kidney and spleen sizes in llamas. Conclusions: The present study provides species-specific information on ultrasonographic appearance and reference values for kidney and spleen dimensions of clinically healthy llamas and alpacas. Results show differences in organ sizes between llamas and alpacas and in alpacas of different sex and age. The results of this study can be used as references for veterinarians performing ultrasound examinations in diseased animals.

Structure and functionality of oat protein extracted by choline chloride-dihydric alcohol deep eutectic solvent and its water binary mixtures

This research reports an eco-friendly oat protein extraction method using choline chloride (ChCl)-butanediol deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and DES/water binary mixtures. Eighteen formulas consisting of ChCl with butanediol isomer (1,2-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, or 2, 3-butanediol) in the absence or presence of water at different molar ratio were examined for the synthesis of DESs and binary mixtures. We found that 6 formulae can be fabricated at a ChCl-butanediol molar ratio of 1:3 independent of water presence, and that they had better oat extraction performance with 90 min extraction at 80 degrees C. Under the optimal conditions, we further assessed the impact of butanediol isomers and water addition on the structure characteristics and functionalities of extracted oat protein. The results suggested that oat protein extracted by ChCl-1,4-butanediol/water binary mixture had highest protein content, solubility, foaming capacity and stability. Our pilot findings provide crucial support to our hypothesis that the isomer of hydrogen bond donor is critically involved in the properties of oat protein the DES and the binary mixtures extracted, which pave the way for the future application of DES in protein extraction.

Effects of graded increases in ethanol consumption on biochemical markers of bone turnover in young adult male cynomolgus macaques

Chronic heavy alcohol use is often associated with reduced bone mineral density and altered bone turnover. However, the dose response effects of ethanol on bone turnover have not been established. This study examined the effects of graded increases of ethanol consumption on biochemical markers of bone turnover in young adult male cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis). For this study, 6.6-year-old (95% CI: 6.5, 6.7) male macaques were subjected to three 30-day sessions of increased ethanol intake over a 90-day interval. During the first 30 days, the monkeys drank a predetermined volume of ethanol corresponding to 0.5 g/kg/day, followed by 1.0 g/kg/day and 1.5 g/kg/day. Osteocalcin, a marker of bone formation, and carboxyterminal cross-linking telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX), a marker of resorption, were measured during each 30-day session. In addition, the ratio of osteocalcin to CTX was determined as a surrogate measure of global turnover balance. Mean osteocalcin decreased by 2.6 ng/mL (1.8, 3.5) for each one-half unit (0.5 g/kg/day) increase in dose (p < 0.001). Mean CTX decreased by 0.13 ng/mL (0.06, 0.20) for each one-half unit increase in dose (p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was an inverse relationship between dose and the ratio of osteocalcin to CTX, such that the mean ratio decreased by 0.9 (0.3, 1.5) for each one-half unit increase in dose (p = 0.01). In summary, male cynomolgus macaques had decreased blood osteocalcin and CTX, and osteocalcin to CTX ratio during the 90-day interval of graded increases in ethanol consumption, indicative of reduced bone turnover and negative turnover balance, respectively. These findings suggest that over the range ingested, ethanol resulted in a linear decrease in bone turnover. Furthermore, the negative bone turnover balance observed is consistent with reported effects of chronic alcohol intake on the skeleton. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Release of catechin from Azivash gum-polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofibers in simulated food and digestion media

In this study, the electrospinning process was applied for the encapsulation of catechin in nanofibers from Azivash (Corchorus olitorius. L) gum-polyvinyl alcohol. By increasing catechin concentration (from 500 to 1000 mg L-1), encapsulation efficiency was lowered but loading capacity increased. A positive correlation was observed between catechin addition and diameter of nanofibers. FTIR spectroscopy highlighted the interactions between catechin and polymer solution which increased the thermal stability of nanofibers. Results of release trends demonstrated that approximately 50% and <70% of the total catechin was released in simulated gastric fluid and simulated intestinal fluid, respectively. Also, a different catechin release rate from nanofibers was observed in simulated low-fat and high-fat food media, respectively. After 12 days, about 90% of the total catechin was released. It was confirmed that designed nanofibers have the capacity to be applied in active packaging for improving the oxidative stability of food and pharmaceutical products. An efficacy trial of adaptive interventions for alcohol use disorder

Background: Adaptive interventions, sometimes referred to as stepped care, are those interventions in which the type or dosage of treatment offered to patients is tailored to baseline clinical presentation and then adjusted over time in response to patient progress or lack thereof. Currently, no adaptive brief interventions exist specifically for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Method: This study used a sequential multiple assignment randomized trial design with 160 individuals with AUD recruited both locally and nationally who had a goal to reduce or abstain from drinking. Participants received brief advice (BA) and then the study reassessed them three weeks later; the study randomized those who did not respond to BA, defined as reducing their drinking to low-risk guidelines, to two session of motivational interviewing (MI) or more BA. The study then reassessed participants at week 8. The study re-randomized non-responders to receive either MI alone or MI plus behavioral self-control therapy (BSCT), also referred to as coping skills therapy, and evaluated participants at week 13. Results: Overall, participants receiving any BSCT made the greatest reductions in drinking. Participants who received MI at week 4 and BSCT at week 8 outperformed all other groups. Conclusion: Findings reveal that prolonged treatment, more sessions, and/or a specific combination of MI and BSCT provided optimal outcomes. Future research should determine whether such an algorithm holds across heterogenous groups of individuals with AUD.
