Strong tough hydrogels via the synergy of freeze-casting and salting out

Natural load-bearing materials such as tendons have a high water content of about 70 per cent but are still strong and tough, even when used for over one million cycles per year, owing to the hierarchical assembly of anisotropic structures across multiple length scales(1). Synthetic hydrogels have been created using methods such as electro-spinning(2), extrusion(3), compositing(4,5), freeze-casting(6,7), self-assembly(8) and mechanical stretching(9,10) for improved mechanical performance. However, in contrast to tendons, many hydrogels with the same high water content do not show high strength, toughness or fatigue resistance. Here we present a strategy to produce a multi-length-scale hierarchical hydrogel architecture using a freezing-assisted salting-out treatment. The produced poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels are highly anisotropic, comprising micrometre-scale honeycomb-like pore walls, which in turn comprise interconnected nanofibril meshes. These hydrogels have a water content of 70-95 per cent and properties that compare favourably to those of other tough hydrogels and even natural tendons; for example, an ultimate stress of 23.5 +/- 2.7 megapascals, strain levels of 2,900 +/- 450 per cent, toughness of 210 +/- 13 megajoules per cubic metre, fracture energy of 170 +/- 8 kilojoules per square metre and a fatigue threshold of 10.5 +/- 1.3 kilojoules per square metre. The presented strategy is generalizable to other polymers, and could expand the applicability of structural hydrogels to conditions involving more demanding mechanical loading. A strategy that combines freeze-casting and salting-out treatments produces strong, tough, stretchable and fatigue-resistant poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels.

Effect of ionizing radiation on the colorimetric properties of PVA-GTA Xylenol Orange Fricke gel dosimeters

Fricke gel dosimeters were prepared using a matrix based on poly(vinyl-alcohol) chemical cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and loaded with Xylenol Orange. The samples were irradiated with gamma rays to doses in the range of 5-30 Gy and the consequent color changes were investigated by using spectrophotometric and colorimetric techniques. Starting from the measurement of the transmittance spectra, an analysis of the color of the dosimeters was carried out considering the CIELAB color space. It allowed to highlight correlations between the color coordinates and the dose. Furthermore, the auto-oxidation processes occurring in the samples were studied by colorimetric measurements on both un-irradiated and irradiated samples at different times, up to two-week post-irradiation. The results showed no significant differences in the oxidation effect on the dosimeters, at least in the investigated dose interval. The study suggested that colorimetric analysis, combined with the spectrophotometric one, can be a useful tool for characterizing the samples in view of a standardization of Fricke gel dosimetry.

Hydrated vanadium pentoxide/reduced graphene oxide-polyvinyl alcohol (V2O5 center dot nH(2)O/rGO-PVA) film as a binder-free electrode for solid-state Zn-ion batteries

Recently, solid-state aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) have become the most promising wearable storage systems to replace Li-ion batteries owing to their advantages such as high safety and environmental friendliness. However, the critical challenge is to develop stable and robust cathode materials for excellent Zn2+ storage. In this study, a hydrated vanadium pentoxide/reduced graphene oxide-polyvinyl alcohol (V2O5 center dot nH(2)O/rGO-PVA, abbreviated as VOH/rGO-P) film was synthesized as a binder-free cathode for solid-state aqueous ZIBs. The addition of PVA not only increases the layer spacing of VOH and forms a strong hydrogen bond network with GO and water molecules, but also enhances the mechanical properties of the film. As a binder-free cathode for solid-state aqueous ZIBs, the VOH/rGO-P film attains excellent electrochemical capacity as high as 481 mAh.g(-1) at 0.1 A.g(-1). Such a high specific capacity indicates that the VOH/rGO-P film shows great potential for the next generation solid-state aqueous ZIBs. (c) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The association between reinforcement sensitivity and substance use is mediated by individual differences in dispositional affectivity in adolescents

Background: Adolescence marks the onset of substance use experimentation and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to certain negative effects of substances. Some evidence indicates reinforcement sensitivity is associated with substance use, though little is known about mechanisms underlying such association. Aims: in the current study were to examine, (1) associations between behavioral activation (BAS) and behavioral inhibition (BIS) system sensitivity, positive (PA) and negative affectivity (NA), and alcohol use and alcohol problems as well as tobacco, and marijuana use, and whether (2) associations are mediated by PA or NA. Methods: Participants were a community sample of N = 125 adolescents (M-age = 15.67 years; SD = 0.93; 52% boys) who completed self-report measures. Results: evinced associations, generally as expected, across variables (all ps < 0.05). In mediation analyses, an association emerged between BIS sensitivity and alcohol use, mediated by NA (95%CIs [0.034; 0.390]); greater BIS sensitivity was associated with greater NA and greater NA was associated with greater alcohol use. These findings were replicated with alcohol problems. An association also emerged between BAS sensitivity and marijuana use, mediated by PA (95%CIs [-0.296; -0.027]); greater BAS sensitivity was associated with greater PA and greater PA was associated with lower marijuana use. Finally, BIS sensitivity was associated with tobacco use through NA (95%CIs [0.023; 0.325]) and PA (95%CIs [0.004; 0.116]), with NA linked to greater, but PA linked to lower tobacco use. BAS sensitivity was also associated with tobacco use through PA (95%CIs [-0.395; -0.049]), with PA linked again to lower tobacco use. Conclusions: There are unique and shared effects of domains of reinforcement sensitivity on adolescent substance use and these vary with index of dispositional affectivity and type of substance considered. Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. Gelatin/Poly (vinyl alcohol)/Inorganic filler composites for phantom breasts

The effect of the various inorganic filler (Zn, ZnO, CuO, Co(NO3)(2), Fe2O3) on the structural, electronic, atomic, and absorption properties to the performance of composite phantom breast with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder has been studied. The bonding characteristic analyzed from the Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectra and the structural properties in the form of the crystallite size, porosity, and dislocation density determined from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. The atomic, electronic, and absorption ability of composite were analyzed from the irradiation intensity after the X-rays for the energies from 60 keV to 85 keV at 10 mAs passing through the samples. The functional group of C=O, C-H, and C-O show covalent bonding as a cross-linking between atoms from the various filler and the atom from the matrix materials. The crystallite size shows a direct correlation between the linear attenuation coefficient and the mass attenuation coefficient. The linear attenuation coefficient of composite gelatin/PVA/ZnO is 0.255 cm(-1), for composite gelatin/PVA/CuO is 0.233 cm(-1) shows good for breast phantom, and for composite gelatin/PVA/Zn is 0.343 cm(-1 )shows excellent characteristics for breast phantom. This study provided a new composite with excellent characteristics as a guide to produce breast phantom.

Folate, alcohol, ADH1B and ALDH2 and colorectal cancer risk

Objective: There is limited evidence on the interaction by alcohol dehydrogenase 2 (ADH1B) (rs1229984) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) (rs671) regarding the associations of alcohol and a methyl diet (low folate and high alcohol intake) with cancer risk, partly because of rare polymorphisms in Western populations. Design: In a case-control study, we estimated the ORs and 95 % CIs to evaluate the associations of ADH1B and ALDH2 genotypes with colorectal cancer (CRC) and the joint association between methyl diets and ADH1B and ALDH2 polymorphisms with CRC risk using logistic regression models. Setting: A hospital-based case-control study. Participants: In total, 1001 CRC cases and 899 cancer-free controls admitted to two university hospitals. Results: We found that alcohol intake increased the risk of CRC; OR (95 % CI) was 2 center dot 02 (1 center dot 41, 2 center dot 87) for >= 60 g/d drinkers compared with non-drinkers (P (trend) < 0 center dot 001). The associations for two polymorphisms with CRC were not statistically significant. However, we found a potential interaction of ALDH2 with methyl diets and CRC. We observed a 9 center dot 08-fold (95 % CI 1 center dot 93, 42 center dot 60) higher risk of CRC for low-methyl diets compared with high-methyl diets among individuals with an A allele of ALDH2, but the association was not apparent among those with ALDH2 GG (P (interaction) = 0 center dot 02). Conclusions: Our data support the evidence that gene-methyl diet interactions may be involved in CRC risk in East Asian populations, showing that a low-methyl diet increased the risk of CRC among individuals with an A allele of ALDH2. Effective degradation of tetracycline via polyvinyl alcohol /Bi2WO6 hybrid hydrogel with easy separation

Developing inexpensive and stable photocatalysts with easy separation for the degradation of antibiotics is highly needed. In this study, a three-dimensional poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/Bi2WO6 (BWO) (PVA/BWO) hybrid hydrogel photocatalyst with easy separation was constructed via freeze-thaw process and then was used to remove Tetracycline (TC) from water. The obtained hydrogels were characterized by various techniques. SEM image and EDS mapping show the successful decoration of BWO and the BWO is homogenously distributed on the PVA substrate. Results of the photocatalytic experiment and total organic carbon content (TOC) measurement show that the constructed PVA/BWO hydrogel could degrade TC effectively under visible light irradiation, even after the PVA/BWO hydrogel had been recycled for five times. Results of XRD, SEM and EDS mapping on the fresh and used PVA/BWO hydrogel confirm its relatively good stability in structure. The possible reaction pathways and mechanism of TC degradation were also analyzed. The PVA/BWO hybrid hydrogel with easy separation could be a new alternative with great potential in efficient removal of persistent organic pollutants.

Health behaviour and risk behaviour of children and adolescents with and without disabilities and health-related impairment: Results of the representative German child and adolescent’s health survey (KiGGS Welle 2)

Background Although around 10% of children and adolescents in Germany live with disabilities and health-related restrictions, their health and risk behaviours have not yet been examined by disability and health-related restrictions. Research objective This study aimed at examining differences in health and risk behaviour of 3-17 year olds with disabilities and/or health-related restrictions and those without in Germany. Materials and methods Based on data from the German KiGGS wave 2 (2014-2017): of the Robert Koch-Institute, data from parents representing 3-10 year olds and from 11-17 year olds with/without disabilities/health-related restrictions were analysed. As dependent variables, physical activity, nutritional and oral health behaviour (n = 11,110) as well as alcohol and tobacco consumption (n = 3060) were used in uni-, bi- and multivariate analyses. Results Children and adolescents with disabilities/health-related restrictions showed more frequent physical inactivity, a higher rate of consumption of beverages containing sugar, a lower tooth brushing frequency and a lower alcohol consumption than their peers. Even after controlling for sociodemographic and -economic background characteristics, these associations for alcohol consumption, the consumption of beverages containing sugar and physical inactivity maintained. There were no differences in tobacco consumption among young people with and without disabilities/health-related restrictions. Conclusions Findings suggest that actions to strengthen health-promoting behaviour of children and adolescents with disabilities/health-related restrictions in the areas of physical inactivity and the consumption of beverages containing sugar are required. By applying behavioral and structural prevention, health behaviour should be target-group-specifically promoted in kindergarten and elementary school.
