Construction of hierarchical photocatalysts by growing ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on Prussian blue analogue-derived bimetallic sulfides for solar co-production of H-2 and organic chemicals

Exploring highly efficient bifunctional photocatalysts for simultaneous H-2 evolution and organic chemical production in pure water represents a green route for sustainable solar energy storage and conversion. Herein, a facile strategy was explored for preparing a hierarchical porous heterostructure of Fe4Ni5S8@ZnIn2S4(FNS@ZIS) by the in situ growth of ZIS nanosheets on Prussian blue analogue (PBA)-derived bimetallic FNS sulfides. A series of FNS@ZIS hierarchical structures were facilely prepared by adjusting the loading amount (n%) of FNS (n = 19, 26, and 32 for FNS@ZIS-1-3). These structures can efficiently drive the solar co-production of H2 and organic chemicals. The optimal co-production was achieved with FNS@ZIS-2, affording a H-2 evolution rate of 10465 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1), along with high selectivity for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde (>99.9%). The performance was 22 and 31 times higher than that of FNS and ZIS, respectively, and even superior to the state-of-the-art results achieved using various sacrificial agents. Further mechanistic study indicated that the unique hierarchical core/shell architecture can facilitate interfacial charge separation, afford bimetallic synergy, abundant active sites and excellent photostability. This work highlights a simple and efficient method for preparing porous multimetallic hierarchical structures for the solar co-production of organic chemicals and H-2 fuel. Supramolecular architecture of a multi-component biomimetic lipid barrier formulation

Hypothesis: Biomimetic liquid crystalline systems are widely used in skin care cosmetics and topical pharmaceutical preparations. Our ability to rationally design such formulations, however, is hampered by our incomplete understanding of their structure on the nanoscale. Experiments: Using polarized light microscopy and small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering, the molecular architecture and properties of a barrier formulation prepared from distearoylphosphatidylcholine mixed with long chain fatty acid and alcohols, with and without antimicrobial pentanediols are directly probed. The nature and composition of the phases identified are determined through small-angle neutron scattering studies using chain-deuterated components, and the detailed structure and dynamics of the gel network lamellae are determined through molecular dynamics simulations. Findings: The formulations show molecular ordering with long and short periodicity lamellar phases and there is little change in these structures caused by changes in temperature, drying, or the application of shear stress. The diol-free formulation is demonstrated to be self-preserving, and the added pentanediols are shown to distribute within the interlamellar regions where they limit availability of water for microbial growth. In culmination of these studies, we develop a more complete picture of these complex biomimetic preparations, and thereby enable their structure-based design. (c) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Evaluation of the inhibitory activity of essential oils against spoilage yeasts and their potential application in yogurt

Yeasts are the leading cause of spoilage in yogurt. Considering the high demand from consumers to use natural products as an alternative to additives, essential oils (EOs) could be a promising solution to guarantee high microbiological standards. The present study highlighted the in vitro antifungal potential of cinnamon, ginger, lemongrass, mandarin, orange, lemon and lime EOs against spoilage yeasts isolated from yogurts prepared with pasteurized buffalo milk. A total of 74 isolates represented by 14 different species of Candida, Rhodotorula, Debaryomyces, Kluyveromyces and Yarrowia genera were subjected to a disc diffusion assay, showing lemongrass EO to have the highest antifungal activity (40.97 +/- 9.86 mm), followed by cinnamon (38.46 +/- 6.59 mm) and orange (12.00 +/- 4.52 mm) EOs. Yarrowia lipolytica was less susceptible to lemongrass EO than Candida sake and Yarrowia deformans isolates. Ginger EO exhibited the lowest efficacy. A minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay showed the ability of lemongrass and cinnamon EOs to inhibit the growth of all selected isolates at concentrations between <= 0.31 and 1.25 mu L/mL. Therefore, for the first time, the two best-performing EOs (lemongrass and cinnamon) based on in vitro assays were assessed for their potential roles as preservatives in an in vivo yogurt model prepared at the laboratory scale. Since some limitations, such as the inhibition of lactic acid bacteria by cinnamon EO, consequently leading to fermentation failure as well as species-specific antifungal activity of lemongrass EO, were observed, further studies are needed to explore the possibility of using a slightly higher concentration of lemongrass EO and/or combinations of different EOs and/or their components. Finally, since yogurt spoilage could also be prevented by correct sanitation procedures of the production environment, the sanitizers commonly used in the food industry were tested against all isolates, showing the high efficiency of alcohol-based sanitizers and the ineffectiveness of chlorine-based sanitizers. Sometimes chemists are able to propose two or more mechanisms that are consistent with the available data. If a proposed mechanism predicts the wrong experimental rate law, however, the mechanism must be incorrect.Welcome to check out more blogs about 3391-86-4, in my other articles. Training emotion regulation processes in alcohol-abstinent individuals: A pilot study

The study aimed to assess whether abstinent individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD) would benefit from enhanced emotional regulation (ER) strategies using the affect regulation training (ART) program based on weekly sessions comprising psycho-education, muscle and respiratory relaxation, awareness, acceptance and tolerance, compassionate personal support, emotion analysis and modification. Seventy-two participants with AUD benefited from ART and were compared on their ER ability, mindfulness, and their experience of abstinence to 40 participants not receiving the program, before it, at the end, and 6 months after. Improvements in ER were observed, particularly in positive centration, action centration or self-blame and in mindfulness abilities after the program and six months later. In addition, by comparing participants who received the program with a short ( < 18 months) or long ( > 18 months) abstinence duration, the results showed a greater decrease in the use of non-adaptive strategies, a greater increase in adaptive strategies and mindfulness abilities in short-term abstinent individuals. These results demonstrate improvement in ER skills after training in people who were abstinent from alcohol. ART is effective for consolidating abstinence and should be used especially at the beginning of withdrawal to promote the rapid implementation of new ER strategies.

Techniques for measuring carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of atmospheric CO2 via isotope ratio mass spectrometry

Measuring the stable isotope compositions of atmospheric CO2 is common in earth and atmospheric sciences, and various analytical methods have been developed utilizing continuous-flow (CF) or dual-inlet (DI) isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Air is typically collected via passive, manual, or automated collection methods and the volume of the air sample ranges from 10 to 300 mL for CF-IRMS to >1 L for DI-IRMS to yield a measurable amount of atmospheric CO2 gas. It has been determined that the integrity of vials and flasks for air sample storage can be compromised after 3 days of air collection for delta C-13 values and within 10 hours for delta O-18 values. Air samples must be purified after collection to remove constituents of air, such as Ar, O-2, N-2, N2O, and water vapor, to avoid isobaric interferences during mass spectrometric measurement. Purification is generally undertaken by utilizing commercial or custom-made preconcentration devices, the blanking method for CF-IRMS, or an offline/online cryogenic separation using a vacuum line for DI-IRMS. Ambient N2O is a component of air that may affect analytical results and thus must either be corrected for or be removed using a gas chromatographic column. In some cases, water is removed during air collection by using a common chemical desiccant, magnesium perchlorate (Mg(ClO4)(2)), or by a dry ice/alcohol mixture (-78 degrees C). Lastly, a linearity issue for IRMS due to the low amount of purified CO2 from a typical ambient air sample must be considered. In general, analytical precisions of 0.02-0.21 parts per thousand and 0.04-0.34 parts per thousand for CF-IRMS and 0.01-0.02 parts per thousand and 0.01-0.02 parts per thousand for DI-IRMS are expected for delta C-13 and delta O-18 measurements, respectively.

Effects of vapourized THC and voluntary alcohol drinking during adolescence on cognition, reward, and anxiety-like behaviours in rats

Cannabis and alcohol co-use is prevalent in adolescence, but the long-term behavioural effects of this co-use remain largely unexplored. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of adolescent alcohol and Delta(9)-tetrahydracannabinol (THC) vapour co-exposure on cognitive- and reward-related behaviours. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received vapourized THC (10 mg vapourized THC/four adolescent rats) or vehicle every other day (from post-natal day (PND) 28-42) and had continuous voluntary access to ethanol (10% volume/volume) in adolescence. Alcohol intake was measured during the exposure period to assess the acute effects of THC on alcohol consumption. In adulthood (PND 56+), rats underwent behavioural testing. Adolescent rats showed higher alcohol preference, assessed using the two-bottle choice test, on days on which they were not exposed to THC vapour. In adulthood, rats that drank alcohol as adolescents exhibited short-term memory deficits and showed decreased alcohol preference; on the other hand, rats exposed to THC vapour showed learning impairments in the delay-discounting task. Vapourized THC, alcohol or their combination had no effect on anxiety-like behaviours in adulthood. Our results show that although adolescent THC exposure acutely affects alcohol drinking, adolescent alcohol and cannabis co-use may not produce long-term additive effects.

Influence of calophyllum inophyllum and Jojoba oil methyl ester blended with n-pentanol additive upon overall performance, combustion and emission characteristics of a TDI engine operated in natural aspirated mode

The present manuscript briefly elaborates the performance, combustion and emission behaviour of a turbocharged direct injection diesel engine operated in dual mode where calophyllum inophyllum and Jojoba oil methyl ester are the injected fuel while in second case the above said test fuel blends were mixed homogeneously with n-pentanol that acts as an additive during the experimentation. The main objective of using n-pentanol is its five straight chain carbon atoms that has better possibility of homogeneous blending with biodiesel blends due to its high cetane number, stability and density in contrast to other alcohol based additives helping in improving engine performance and diminished exhaust emissions. During the experimentation, engine parameters like compression ratio (17.5:1), injection timing (21 degrees bTDC), injector opening pressure (220 bar), speed (1500 rpm) were kept constant. Results concluded CIME20-P20 blend to be reliable and potential alternative fuel to partially replace conventional diesel fuel. Considering performance and emission characteristics calophyllum inophyllum oil methyl ester and pentanol blend (CIME20-P20) depicts a higher brake specific fuel consumption of 3.41% while lower exhaust gas temperature and brake thermal efficiency of 13.46% and 1.18% in contrast to diesel fuel. Moving on to emission analysis, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen and smoke opacity for CIME20-P20 were 57.02%, 59.37%, 17.39% and 41.53% lower than conventional diesel fuel. Hence, coming to the overall summary, CIME20-P20 depicts better performance and diminished exhaust emission thereby making it more potential to substitute the conventional fuel without any engine alteration for better environmental sustainability and energy security.

An Examination of the Patterns of Substance Use in Activity Spaces and Their Relationship to Problematic Use

During adolescence, adolescents are given more freedom to independently interact with a variety of social contexts. The eco-developmental model suggests that the activity spaces where adolescents spend their time affect substance-use behaviors beyond peer influences, and that the relationships may differ based on the adolescent’s demographic characteristics. This study examines adolescent patterns of reported substance use across activity spaces to determine whether the patterns of use are related to problematic substance use, and whether the relationships differ based on the participants’ race. Cross-sectional survey data from the study, Drug Use Among Young American Indians: Epidemiology and Prediction, 1993-2006 and 2009-2013, were used. Five patterns of adolescent alcohol use and six patterns of adolescent drug use in activity spaces were identified. There were significant differences in the relationship between class membership and problematic substance use by race, suggesting that contexts may be interacting with an adolescent’s race to influence use.

Effective remediation of cadmium and zinc co-contaminated soil by electrokinetic-permeable reactive barrier with a pretreatment of complexing agent and microorganism

The combination of electrokinetic-permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB) is considered as a promising technology for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils. In this study, considering the convenient operation and recycling, a new sheet PRB material of sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol/attapulgite was prepared and characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared spectra. Subsequently, the effect of a pretreatment of citric acid (CA) and Shewanella oneidensis (MR-1) on zinc (Zn (II)) and cadmium (Cd (II)) removal from soils by EK-PRB was investigated. Results showed that Zn (II) and Cd (II) gradually migrated from anode to cathode in electric field within 8 days’ EK-PRB remediation. The simultaneous addition of CA and MR-1 resulted into the highest electric current, the lowest pH and the more negative soil zeta potential. Correspondingly, the highest removal efficiency of Zn (II) and Cd (II) also occurred in CA + MR-1 group. The new sheet PRB material effectively captured Zn (II) and Cd (II) from soils, and the most adsorption occurred in CA + MR-1 group: 1108.36 mg/kg Zn (II) and 53.84 mg/kg Cd (II) nearby the cathode after 8 days’ remediation. Specifically, for both Zn (II) and Cd (II), the CA + MR-1 group showed the greatest reduction in exchangeable and carbonate fractions and the highest increase in Fe-Mn oxidation and residual fractions. Overall, with a pretreatment of CA and MR-1, the residual Zn (II) and Cd (II) in soils were greatly reduced after EK-PRB remediation, due to the migration in the electric filed and the adsorption of the new sheet PRB material.
