Electrophysiological Responses of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis capitata, to the Cera Trap (R) Lure: Exploring Released Antennally-Active Compounds

The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata, is a worldwide pest of agriculture able to use olfactory cues to locate habitat, food sources, mates and oviposition sites. The sensitivity of medfly olfaction has been exploited to develop olfactory-based attractants that are currently important tools for detection, control and eradication of its populations. Among these is Cera Trap(R) (BIOIBERICA, S.A.U.), a cost-effective bait. Here we used coupled gas chromatography/electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) approaches to characterize the medfly antennally-active compounds released by this lure. We identified GC peaks corresponding to chemicals belonging to six different classes including heterocyclic aromatic compounds, aliphatic alcohols, aldehydes, esters, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and aromatic alcohols. We tested ten potential candidate volatiles belonging to these classes and predicted to be emitted by the lure and found that they were eliciting electroantennographic responses in medfly adults. These results will help in unravelling the physiological mechanisms of odor perception in both sexes, especially in relation to Cera Trap(R) attractant activity, which in the field has been shown to be female-specific. These findings and their developments will ultimately expand the toolbox for medfly control in the field.

Conjoint adolescent developmental trajectories of alcohol and marijuana use and early adult outcomes among North American Indigenous people

Objective: The current study examined the developmental interrelationships between alcohol and marijuana use trajectories from ages 10 to 18 years in a sample of North American Indigenous adolescents. Distinct co-use groups were formed to create profiles of young adult outcomes. Method: Dual group-based trajectory models of marijuana and alcohol frequency were estimated using data from a longitudinal community-based participatory study of Indigenous adolescents from the upper Midwest and Canada. Joint probabilities were used to create co-use groups, and profiles were created using early adult (Mean Age – 26.28 years) outcomes. Results: Four joint trajectory groups were identified: 1) no marijuana and no/low alcohol use (34.4%), 2) mid-onset alcohol only (14%), 3) mid-onset co-use starting at age 13 (24%), and 4) early-onset co-use starting at age 11 (22%). High probabilities existed that adolescents would use marijuana early if they began drinking alcohol at the youngest ages, and that adolescents would not use marijuana if they drank infrequently or delayed drinking until mid-adolescence. Adult outcomes were poorer for the early- and mid-onset co-use groups, but there were few differences between the no/low use and alcohol-only groups. Conclusion: Co-use of marijuana and alcohol was associated with poorer outcomes in early adulthood, particularly for the group with an earlier age of onset. Abstaining from either substance in adolescence was associated with better outcomes.

Color removal from model dye effluent using PVA-GA hydrogel beads

A low cost polyvinyl alcohol-glutaraldehyde cross-linked hydrogel beads were prepared and used for color removal from model industrial effluent containing Congo Red dye, using adsorption technique. The adsorption studies were performed using batch and fixed-bed reactor. Developed adsorbent, achieved adsorption capacity as high as similar to 34 mg of dye per gram of bead (condition: pH 6 and 45 degrees C). Batch studies revealed a multi-layer adsorption governed by Harkins Jura model. Whereas the adsorption kinetics followed fractal like pseudo second order model, controlled by intraparticle diffusion phenomena. The fixed bed studies revealed steeper break through curves during adsorption operation when high dye influent rates and low bed height were used. This behaviour by the fixed bed reactor was best explained by the Thomas mathematical model. Studies further demonstrated that an external and internal mass diffusion become no more rate limiting during these experiments.

Post-legalization changes in marijuana use in a sample of young California adults

Introduction: Increasing marijuana use among young adults is a concern due to substantial acute and chronic health risks. More widespread use of marijuana may also lead to increased use of nicotine and tobacco products. California legalized commercial sales of marijuana for recreational use as of January 2018. To our knowledge no studies to date have examined subsequent changes in marijuana use. The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that marijuana use frequency increased following legalization of recreational sales. We also hypothesized that increased marijuana frequency would predict greater frequency of nicotine/tobacco consumption. Methods: The study was a secondary analysis of a longitudinal study of tobacco use among non-daily cigarette smokers. Participants were 563 young adults (aged 18-24) enrolled in 2015-16 and followed quarterly for 3 years. Results: A piecewise multilevel regression model indicated that marijuana use frequency did not change over time, including following legalization. More frequent use was associated with younger age and identifying as white (ps < 0.001, which did not change after legalization. Marijuana frequency was moderated by sex (p < .001), with women reporting increasing and men decreasing use over time. It was also associated with tobacco use, and particularly with e-cigarette use following legalization (ps < 0.05). Conclusions: Findings suggest legalization of recreational marijuana sales had a negligible overall impact on days of use among young adults, but may have prompted increased interest in marijuana among some, particularly women and e-cigarette users. In this work delphinidin 3-O-sambubioside (Dp3sam) isolated from Hibiscus sabdariffa L. flower was esterified with octanoic acid using Candida antarctica lipase B. The physical-chemical properties of the new lipophilic pigment were studied by UV-vis spectroscopy. Dp3sam with chloride, acetate and formate as counter ions were employed to study the lipophilization reaction. The hydrolysis of the reagent was avoided with a formate counter ion and the expected product was achieved with a noteworthy change of solubility. 1D and 2D NMR characterization of Dp3sam-C8 confirmed that the lipophilization took place at the primary alcohol of the glucoside moiety. Overall, the Dp3sam-C8 ester presents a stabilization of the quinoidal base (blue color) at neutral or moderate alkaline pH, which foresees a potential use of this pigment as a broad kind of industries on lipo-soluble formulations.

Formation mechanism and environmental stability of whey protein isolate-zein core-shell complex nanoparticles using the pH-shifting method

The alcohol-free pH-shifting method was applied to fabricate stable complex nanoparticles from hydrophilic whey protein isolate (WPI) and hydrophobic zein, which was aimed to develop a strategy to obtain desirable physicochemical stability. When the mass ratio of WPI and zein was elevated from 9:1 to 1:1, the size of WPI-zein complex nanoparticles was increased from 90 to 150 nm. The complex nanoparticle showed desirable storage stability (28 days) and physical stability, as well as excellent stability against various environmental stresses (heat, pH and ionic strength). The analysis of FTIR and the nanoparticle dissociation test revealed that hydrophobic effects and electrostatic attraction played an important role in the formation of WPI-zein complex nanoparticles. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) images evidenced the core-shell structure of WPI-zein complex nanoparticles with a regular spherical shape. The findings showed the feasibility of the simple pH-shifting method to fabricate the protein-based complex nanoparticles, which were expected to be further applied in the delivery of bioactive compounds.

Photo image processing analysis of electron beam irradiation on a new liquid scintillator based on alcohol

Liquid scintillator is widely used in various fields. This paper proposes a new base material, a mixture of alcohol and water for liquid scintillator and introduces photo image analysis to investigate electron beam irradiation on the new alcohol-based liquid scintillator. A possibility of using alcohol as a new detection solution in particle detector is briefly described. Alcohol has good solubility for fluor, is biodegradable and has low toxicity. The development of an alcohol-based liquid scintillator was investigated and some physical and optical properties of the alcohol-based liquid scintillator were measured. The energy exchange process that the absorption spectrum overlaps with the emission spectrum was seen in our alcohol-based liquid scintillator. To date, there have been no R&D studies elsewhere for use of alcohol-based liquid scintillator in particle detectors. As an application, we introduce a new measurement technique where range measurements were achieved after irradiating an alcohol-based liquid scintillator with electron beam energies of 6-12 MeV. By analyzing the range images taken by digital camera, or even mobile phone camera, it was possible to find out the fluor component dissolved in the alcohol-based liquid scintillator. This method has sufficient potential as it enables us to estimate wavelengths in the visible region without using an expensive spectrophotometer. These results can be used in medical imaging applications for the treatment of tumors or cancers where irradiation by electron beams takes place. Furthermore, alcohol-based LS could be used in future, next generation particle detectors.

Complete biodegradation of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) by a novel Pseudomonas sp. YJB6

Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are environmentally ubiquitous and have aroused a worldwide concern due to their threats to environment and human health. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the most frequently observed PAEs in the environment. In this study, a novel bacterium identified as Pseudomonas sp. YJB6 that isolated from PAEs-contaminated soil was determined to have strong DBP-degrading activity. A complete degradation of DBP in 200 mg/L was achieved within 3 days when YJB6 was cultivated at 31.4 degrees C with an initial inoculation size of 0.6 (OD600) in basic mineral salts liquid medium (MSM), pH 7.6. The degradation curves of DBP (50-2000 mg/L) fitted well the first-order kinetics model, with a half-life (t(1/2)) ranging from 0.86 to 1.88 d. The main degradation intermediates were identified as butyl-ethyl phthalate (BEP), mono-butyl phthalate (MBP), phthalic acid (PA) and benzoic acid (BA), indicating a new complex and complete biodegradation pathway presented by YJB6. DBP might be metabolized through de-esterification, beta-oxidation, and hydrolysis, followed by entering the Krebs cycle of YJB6 as a final step. Strain YJB6 was successfully immobilized with sodium alginate (SA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and SA-PVA. The immobilization significantly improved the stability and adaptability of the cells thus resulting in high volumetric DBP-degrading rates compared to that of the freely suspended cells. In addition, these immobilized cells can be reused for many cycles with well conserved in DBP-degrading activity. The ideal DBP degrading ability of the free and immobilized YJB6 cells suggests that strain YJB6, especially the SA-PVA+ YJB6 promises great potential to remove hazardous PAEs. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
