Diastereoselective Synthesis of Aryl C-Glycosides from Glycosyl Esters via C-O Bond Homolysis

Surface kinetics and transport phenomena modelling for furfural hydrotreatment over Pd/C in isopropanol and tetrahydrofuran

Extensive experimental and computational study of hemicellulose-derived furfural hydrogenation, hydrodeoxygenation, oligomerisation and etherification has been conducted over Pd/C catalyst. Both furfural ring and aldehyde group hydrogenation have low activation energies (19.1 kJ mol(-1) and 23.5 kJ mol(-1)), although subsequent hydrogenation of tetrahydrofurfural (E-a = 42.5 kJ mol(-1)) is preferred at higher temperatures compared to furfuryl alcohol (E-a = 24.0 kJ mol(-1)) hydrogenation. Complete hydrogenation can be achieved at room temperature, while deoxygenation becomes considerable above 150 degrees C (E-a = 59.6 kJ mol(-1)), leading to complete conversion in most tests, yielding up to 77% tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol at 75 bar in isopropanol.

Functional applications and luminescence properties of emission tunable phosphors CaMoO4@SiO2:Ln(3+) (Ln=Eu, Tb, Dy)

In this present work, a room temperature coprecipitation method for the synthesis of CaMoO4@SiO2:Ln (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+) phosphors was reported. To further explore its applications, the transparent photoluminescent film was developed through the incorporation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and selective and sensitive detection performance on dichromate was demonstrated in detail. In addition, red emission LED devices was assembled with as-prepared phosphors. The present results provide not only the high-performance phosphors modified by silica, but also a deep explanation of the structure-property relationship of the as-prepared sample. The impact of emotional face stimuli on working memory performance among men and women with alcohol use disorder

Background: Individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) often display compromise in emotional processing and non-affective neurocognitive functions. However, relatively little empirical work explores their intersection. In this study, we examined working memory performance when attending to and ignoring facial stimuli among adults with and without AUD. We anticipated poorer performance in the AUD group, particularly when task demands involved ignoring facial stimuli. Whether this relationship was moderated by facial emotion or participant sex were explored as empirical questions. Methods: Fifty-six controls (30 women) and 56 treatment-seekers with AUD (14 women) completed task conditions in which performance was advantaged by either attending to or ignoring facial stimuli, including happy, neutral, or fearful faces. Group, sex, and their interaction were independent factors in all models. Efficiency (accuracy/response time) was the primary outcome of interest. Results: An interaction between group and condition (F-1,F-107 = 6.03, p < .02) was detected. Individual comparisons suggested this interaction was driven by AUD-associated performance deficits when ignoring faces, whereas performance was equivalent between groups when faces were attended. Secondary analyses suggested little influence of specific facial emotions on these effects. Conclusions: These data provide partial support for initial hypotheses, with the AUD group demonstrating poorer working memory performance conditioned on the inability to ignore irrelevant emotional face stimuli. The absence of group differences when scenes were to be ignored (faces remembered) suggests the AUD-associated inability to ignore irrelevance is influenced by specific stimulus qualities. Validity and measurement invariance of the Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment incentive salience domain among treatment-seekers with alcohol use disorder

Incentive salience, or the attribution of motivational value to stimuli, is a biopsychological process that is disrupted in alcohol use disorder (AUD). The Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA) is a framework to characterize heterogeneity in addiction and establish a common assessment battery for research and clinical use. The ANA framework hypothesizes three constructs that correspond to processes in the etiology, course, and treatment of addiction: incentive salience, negative emotionality, and executive function. The current study extends prior findings on the ANA by validating the incentive salience construct among participants (n = 563) in a multisite prospective study of individuals entering treatment for AUD. We used confirmatory factor analysis to test a one-factor model of incentive salience. Indicators included items assessing perception of urges to drink from the Alcohol Dependence Scale, Impaired Control Scale, and Marlatt Relapse Interview. Results indicated the one-factor model fit the data well (chi(2) (12) = 19.42, p = .08; RMSEA = 0.034 [90% CI: 0.000, 0.060], CFI = 0.992) and was measurement invariant across sex. Incentive salience was associated with drinking patterns (e.g., drinks per day, r = 0.447 [95% CI: 0.379, 0.514]); reasons for drinking (urges/temptation r = 0.529 [95% CI: 0.460, 0.599]); testing personal control, r = 0.384 (95% CI: 0.308, 0.461); social pressure, r = 0.549 (95% CI: 0.481, 0.617); and family history of AUD, r = 0.134. The incentive salience factor demonstrated greater predictive validity for drinking outcomes compared to alternative preexisting scales. Overall, this study provides support for the construct validity and measurement invariance of the ANA incentive salience construct in a sample of individuals seeking AUD treatment.

Impacts of childhood adversity forms and drinker self-schema on undergraduate drinking behaviors and depression

Purpose: Drinking behaviors and depression are common and highly correlated behaviors in undergraduates. Child adversity and drinker self-schemas have been recognized as significant risk factors of drinking behaviors and depression. However, how the various child adversity forms differentially influence the formation of drinker self-schema and behaviors is underexplored. We aimed to determine whether drinker self-schema serves as a mechanism underlying the influence of child adversity forms on drinking frequency, drinking problems, and depressive symptoms. Methods: A cross-sectional, correlational study design with an anonymous, internet-based survey was conducted. Participants were 330 first- and second-year undergraduates enrolled in a four-year college/university as full–time students in Taiwan. Path analysis was performed to examine the direct and indirect effects (through drinker self-schema) of child adversity forms on drinking frequency, drinking problems, and depressive symptoms. Gender and friend’s alcohol use were the covariates. Results: Psychological abuse, psychological neglect, physical neglect, and household substance use were associated with drinker self-schema, which was associated with drinking frequency, drinking problems, and depressive symptoms. Physical abuse was associated with drinking frequency. Household substance use and parent(s) treated violently were associated with drinking problems. Psychological neglect and household mental illness were associated with depressive symptoms. Moreover, psychological abuse and psychological neglect had indirect effects on drinking frequency and drinking problems through drinker self-schema. Conclusions: Different forms of childhood adversity are differently associated with drinker self-schema, drinking behaviors, and depression. Drinker self-schema serves as an underlying mechanism linking psychological mal-treatments to drinking behaviors.

Conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene over Ag-ZrO2/SiO2 catalysts: The role of surface interfaces

A series of Ag-ZrO2/SiO2 catalysts with different metal-support interfaces were synthesized in an effort to elucidate the roles of specific interfaces in controlling the ethanol to 1,3-butadiene conversion and selectivity. According to the results of detailed characterizations (e.g. CO/pyridine-DRIFTS, XPS, TEM, NH3-TPD, and H-1 MAS NMR), it was found that the Ag-O-Si interfaces significantly enhanced the dehydrogenation of ethanol while the presence of ZrO2 improved the interaction between Ag and ZrO2 /SiO2, creating more Ae active sites. The high dispersion of ZrO2 on SiO2 generated abundant Zr-O-Si interfaces with medium and weak Lewis acidity, promoting the condensation of acetaldehyde to crotonaldehyde. These Zr-O-Si interfaces in close interaction with Ae species played a critical role in the enhanced H transfer during the MPV reduction of crotonaldehyde to crotyl alcohol. The synergies among the interfaces resulted in retarded ethanol dehydration reactivity, balanced ethanol dehydrogenation and condensation reactions, and a subsequent high 1,3-butadiene yield. Social interaction anxiety and perceived coping efficacy: Mechanisms of the association between minority stress and drinking consequences among sexual minority women

Sexual minority women (SMW; individuals who identify as women and as lesbian, bisexual, or with another sexual minority identity) are at increased risk for problematic alcohol use compared to their heterosexual counterparts. This increased risk has been attributed to minority stress. However, longitudinal research examining associations between minority stress and alcohol use outcomes is extremely limited and examinations of these associations at the daily level are nearly non-existent. Further, few longitudinal studies have examined mechanisms through which minority stress may impact alcohol use. We utilized data from a 14-day daily diary study of 98 SMW to examine daily-level associations between experiences of minority stress, alcohol consumption and consequences, and two proposed mediators of these associations (perceived coping efficacy, social interaction anxiety). Results indicated that on days when participants experienced minority stress events, they experienced lower coping efficacy, higher social interaction anxiety, and more drinking consequences than usual. Minority stress was not associated with same-day alcohol consumption. Perceived coping efficacy and social interaction anxiety mediated the same-day association between minority stress and drinking consequences. No prospective associations were significant, suggesting that studies with multiple assessments per day may be necessary to detect immediate effects of minority stress. Findings highlight the potential impact of daily experiences of minority stress on alcohol consequences and provide evidence that two general psychological processes may be mechanisms through which minority stress impacts alcohol consequences. These results provide evidence of a need for interventions that teach SMW skills for coping with minority stress and its psychological consequences.

Older workers in the alcohol and other drug sector: Predictors of workforce retention

Objective Older workers are increasingly prevalent in health and human services, including the alcohol and other drug (AOD) sector. Their turnover intentions have important implications for service system stability and retention. Methods Descriptive and regression analyses of survey data examined age-related differences (<50, >= 50 years old) in non-government workers’ demographic, health and professional profiles and predictors of turnover intention. Results Older workers (>= 50 years, n = 86) comprised one-third of this workforce. Compared to younger workers (n = 164), they experienced greater discrimination but higher work-life balance and work engagement. Turnover intention was predicted by job satisfaction, discrimination and work engagement. Conclusion Older workers’ well-being and workforce retention are essential for effective leadership, succession planning and service continuity. Their needs and retention motivations are identified. Age-specific support mechanisms, proactive retention and anti-discrimination strategies are identified priorities.

Tissue-specific transcriptome recovery on withdrawal from chronic alcohol exposure in zebrafish

Alcohol consumption can lead to a wide range of systemic disorders brought about by transcriptional changes. Recent studies have documented altered behavior and physiology in zebrafish exposed to alcohol. In this work, we have identified the changes in the zebrafish transcriptome in response to chronic alcohol exposure. We have further followed the extent of transcriptional recovery upon withdrawal from alcohol and found evidence of tissue-specific responses. Our results indicate a greater extent of recovery of the brain transcriptome compared to the liver. We identify two distinct classes of genes in response to withdrawal from alcohol exposure – those that recover their pre-alcohol expression profile versus those that retain altered expression even after the fish are removed from the alcohol environment. Finally, we have examined gender-specific responses to alcohol exposure in zebrafish and find evidence for distinct alcohol tolerance levels. Upon chronic alcohol exposure, a higher percentage of genes show perturbation in expression profile in males compared to females. Female fish also recover better with more genes regaining the control expression level upon withdrawal from alcohol. Overall, our work identifies genes and pathways perturbed by exposure to alcohol, and demonstrates the extent of gender- and tissue-specific transcriptional changes associated with chronic alcoholism and withdrawal.
