Ultrafast luminescence (PL) spectroscopy can cleanly resolve excited-state dynamics and coupling to the environment; there is a demand for new methods that combine broadband detection and low backgrounds. A new method, transient grating luminescence spectroscopy (TGPLS), addresses this challenge by exploiting a focusing geometry where ultrafast broadband spectra are transiently diffracted away from the background PL. TGPLS can resolve the complex spectral relaxation observed in conjugated polymer and oligomer solutions, with an essentially flat spectral response throughout the visible region and potentially beyond. The benefits demonstrated using TGPLS could expand access to spectral information, particularly for other multichromophoric and heterogeneous materials where complex spectral relaxation is expected.

High mobility, stable and thick hole-transporting layer (HTL) materials are highly desirable for organic solar cells (OSCs). Two pH neutral conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), PCPDT-T and PCPDT-2T, based on 3,4-dithia-7H-cyclopenta[a]pentalene and thienyl units with a self-doping effect were designed and synthesized. Between the 2 CPEs, the PCPDT-T exhibits higher, more homogeneous mobility and appropriate work function, which makes it an ideal HTL material for OSCs. The single-junction OSCs modified with the PCPDT-T HTL showed an outstanding power conversion efficiency of 9.3%, which is much higher than that of the PEDOT:PSS-modified devices (8.0%). Notably, the PCPDT-T HTL exhibits excellent thickness insensitivity in fabricating OSC devices, i.e. OSC devices with very thick PCPDT-T interlayers over 50 nm still demonstrated high power conversion efficiencies over 7.1%, which is very compatible to meet the requirement for future roll-to-roll printing.

A series of polythiophenes (PTn) based on dialkyl-cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) units alternating with short un-substituted thiophene segments of length n (n being the number of thiophenes) along the chain has been synthesized to control the morphol. of PTn:PCBM blends for solar cell applications via the chem. structure of the polymer rather than via (post) processing conditions. The degree of phase separation in PTn:PCBM blends can be controlled via n, because with increase in n the number of solubilizing side chains per thiophene is reduced. For the most soluble derivative, PT0, we find that PCBM crystallizes first, while for the least soluble version, PT3, polymer aggregation prevails. The most intimately mixed morphol. and best solar cells were obtained for PT2, which exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of about 1.5% under AM1.5G conditions when mixed with PCBM. Although the final PCE is moderate, the study represents an example of a rational approach towards morphol. control via chem. structure, rather than via processing.

We synthesized xanthene-based oligothiophene-layered polymers containing bithiophenes, terthiophenes, quaterthiophenes and quinquethiophenes by the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. The polymers were characterized by various spectroscopic and electrochem. methods. They were well soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable. Effective π-π interactions among the layered oligothiophene units in the polymer backbone were not observed in the ground state as well as in the excited state. A possible application of the polymers in opto-electronic devices such as hole transporting materials is expected.

We report the synthesis and properties of π-stacked polymers consisting of oligothiophene and naphthalene as the stacked π-system and the scaffold, resp. The titled polymers were obtained by the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. Oligothiophene units were layered in proximity, ∼3.0 Å from each other. Contribution of the quinoidal structure of the oligothiophene units involving the naphthalene scaffolds in the excited state resulted in relatively high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies. Two new copolymers, P1 and P2, composed of 4[4-(alkoxy)phenyl]-2, 6-bis(4-bromophenyl)pyridine and bithiophene units, have been synthesized via Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. 4[4-(alkoxy)phenyl]-2, 6-bis(4-bromophenyl)pyridines were synthesized starting from condensation reaction of 4-bromoacetophenone and 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde, and subsequent alkoxylation of hydroxyl groups. All of the polymers and intermediates were characterized using FTIR and NMR spectroscopies. The synthesized polymers exhibit good solubility in common organic solvents. The maximum absorption peak for P1 and P2 was 430 and 420 nm, resp. The optical band gap energy of the polymers was determined by absorption onset and found to be 2.17 eV for P1 and 2.13 eV for P2.

Transition metal complexes bearing metal-boron bonds are of particular relevance to catalytic C-H borylation reactions, with iridium polyboryl and polyhydrido-boryl complexes the current benchmark catalysts for these transformations. Herein, we demonstrate that polyhydride boryl phosphine rhenium complexes are accessible and catalyze the C-H borylation of heteroaromatic substrates. Reaction of [K(DME)(18-c-6)][ReH4(Bpin)(η2-HBpin)(κ2-H2Bpin)] 1 with 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) produced [K(18-c-6)][ReH42-HBpin)(dppp)] 2 through substitution of two equivalent of HBpin, and protonation of 2 formed the neutral complex [ReH6(Bpin)(dppp)] 3. Combined X-ray crystallog. and DFT studies show that 2 is best described as a σ-borane complex, whereas 3 is a boryl complex. Significantly, the boryl complex 3 acted as a catalyst for the C(sp2)-H borylation of a variety of heteroarenes (14 examples including furan, thiophene, pyrrole and indole derivatives) and displayed similar reactivity to the iridium analogs.

Quadrupolar oligothiophene chromophores composed of four to five thiophene rings with two terminal (E)-dimesitylborylvinyl groups (4 V-5 V), and five thiophene rings with two terminal aryldimesitylboryl groups (5 B), and an analog of 5 V with a central EDOT ring (5 VE), were synthesized via Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions in high yields (66-89 %). Crystal structures of 4 V, 5 B, bithiophene 2 V, and five thiophene-derived intermediates are reported. Chromophores 4 V, 5 V, 5 B and 5 VE have photoluminescence quantum yields of 0.26-0.29, which are higher than those of the shorter analogs 1 V-3 V (0.01-0.20), and short fluorescence lifetimes (0.50-1.05 ns). Two-photon absorption (TPA) spectra were measured for 2 V-5 V, 5 B and 5 VE in the range 750-920 nm. The measured TPA cross-sections for the series 2 V-5 V increase steadily with length up to a maximum of 1930 GM. We compare the TPA properties of 2 V-5 V with the related compounds 5 B and 5 VE, giving insight into the structure-property relation for this class of chromophore. DFT and TD-DFT results, including calculated TPA spectra, complement the exptl. findings and contribute to their interpretation. A comparison to other related thiophene and dimesitylboryl compounds indicates that our design strategy is promising for the synthesis of efficient dyes for two-photon-excited fluorescence applications.
