Enhanced biodiesel production from oleic acid using TiO2-decorated magnetic ZIF-8 nanocomposite catalyst and its utilization for used frying oil conversion to valuable product

In this study, a new recyclable TiO2-decorated magnetic ZIF-8 (Fe3O4@ZIF-8/TiO2) nanocomposite catalyst was first synthesized and its structural and morphological properties were characterized through different techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, TEM, EDX, TPD, and VSM. Then, biodiesel was produced using the Fe3O4@ZIF-8/TiO2 catalyst through the esterification of oleic acid in the presence of ethanol. Response surface methodology (RSM) was also employed to achieve the optimum experimental operating variables affecting the yield of biodiesel production. Significant variables like the amount of catalyst, the molar ratio of alcohol to fatty acid, reaction time, and temperature were optimized through RSM to achieve the highest yield of biodeisel production. The results indicated that the highest biodiesel yield is obtained at the reaction temperature of 50 degrees C, the reaction time of 62.5 min, the alcohol to oleic acid molar ratio 30:1, and 0.2 g (6 %wt) amount of catalyst. In this condition, the highest yield of biodiesel production was found 80% and 93% using ethanol and methanol, respectively; around 40% higher than pristine TiO2 and magnetic ZIF-8. Subsequently, the biodiesel production in optimum conditions was evaluated from frying oil by using the as-prepared catalyst. The result from H-1 NMR and GC-MS analyses confirmed the efficient conversion of frying oil wastes to valuable biofuel product.

Au-Pd nanoparticles immobilized on TiO2 nanosheet as an active and durable catalyst for solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol

TiO2 nanocrystals with controlled facets have been extensively investigated due to their excellent photocatalytic performance in sustainable and green energy field. However, the applications in thermal catalysis without applying UV irradiation are comparably less and the identification of their intrinsic roles, especially the different catalytic behaviors of each crystal facet, remains not fully recognized. In this study, bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles supported on anatase TiO2 nanosheets exposing {001} facets or TiO2 nanospindles exposing {101} as a catalyst were prepared by sol-immobilization method and used for solvent-free benzyl alcohol oxidation. The experimental results indicated that the exposed facet of the support has a significant effect on the catalytic performance. AuPd/TiO2-001 catalyst exhibited a higher benzyl alcohol conversion than that of the AuPd/TiO2-101. Meanwhile, all the prepared AuPd/TiO2 catalysts were characterized by XRD, ICP-AES, XPS, BET, TEM, and HRTEM. The results revealed that the higher number of oxygen vacancies in TiO2 -sheets with the exposed {001} facets of higher surface energy could be responsible for the observed enhancement in the catalytic performance of benzyl alcohol oxidation. The present study displays that it is plausible to enhance the catalytic performance for the benzyl alcohol oxidation by tailoring the exposed facet of the TiO2 as a catalyst support. Reducing alcohol and/or cocaine-induced reward and toxicity via an epidermal stem cell-based gene delivery platform

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is one of the foremost public health problems. Alcohol is also frequently co-abused with cocaine. There is a huge unmet need for the treatment of AUD and/or cocaine co-abuse. We recently demonstrated that skin grafts generated from mouse epidermal stem cells that had been engineered by CRISPR-mediated genome editing could be transplanted onto mice as a gene delivery platform. Here, we show that expression of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) gene delivered by epidermal stem cells attenuated development and reinstatement of alcohol-induced drug-taking and seeking as well as voluntary oral alcohol consumption. GLP1 derived from the skin grafts decreased alcohol-induced increase in dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. In exploring the potential of this platform in reducing concurrent use of drugs, we developed a novel co-grafting procedure for both modified human butyrylcholinesterase (hBChE)- and GLP1-expressing cells. Epidermal stem cell-derived hBChE and GLP1 reduced acquisition of drug-taking and toxicity induced by alcohol and cocaine co-administration. These results imply that cutaneous gene delivery through skin transplants may add a new option to treat drug abuse and co-abuse.

The contributions of everyday and major experiences of racial discrimination to current alcohol use and regular smoking in Black adults: Considering variation by demographic characteristics and family history

Background: Racial discrimination has consistently been linked to elevated alcohol use and smoking in Black adults, but the independent contributions of everyday and major experiences of discrimination have rarely been investigated. The present study aimed to identify variation in magnitude of the links between each type of racial discrimination with current frequency of alcohol use and regular smoking by demographic characteristics and family history of problem drinking/regular smoking in Black adults in the U.S. Methods: Data were drawn from 4462 adults (29.40% Afro Caribbean, 70.60% African American; 63.20% female) in a nationally representative sample of Black Americans. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to predict current frequency of alcohol use and regular smoking using the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) and Major Experiences of Discrimination Scale (MEDS), testing for interactions with demographic characteristics and family history. Results: In the alcohol model, an EDS by education level interaction was observed: OR = 1.04 (CI:1.02-1.07) for < high school; OR = 0.95 (CI:0.92-0.98) for >= high school. MEDS was independently associated with alcohol use (OR = 1.11, CI:1.04-1.18). In the smoking model, EDS was associated with elevated risk (OR = 1.03, CI:1.01-1.04) and a MEDS by age cohort interaction was observed: OR = 1.24 (CL1.11-1.38) for Application In Synthesis of Isoborneol.

Introducing alcohol as a drug in medicine reviews with pharmacists: Findings from a co-design workshop with patients

Introduction Alcohol poses a range of potential problems to people taking medications, but health professionals are usually not comfortable talking about drinking with patients. The Medicines and Alcohol Consultation aims to increase the capacity of pharmacists to conduct person-centred reviews in which alcohol is regarded as another drug to be discussed alongside medications. This paper explores sensitivities in discussing alcohol and views on the legitimacy of the Medicines and Alcohol Consultation intervention concept at a pharmacy-user intervention co-design workshop. Methods A co-design workshop was held with 14 people recruited from UK community pharmacies who regularly drank alcohol and took medications for long-term conditions. This formed one element of a broader, iterative, intervention co-production process. Workshop discussions were audio-recorded and analysed thematically. Results The basic intervention concept resonated well, though not entirely unproblematically. Participants were interested in receiving information on how medications interact with alcohol and how this might affect their own conditions, with which to make their own informed choices. Linking alcohol use to medicines gave legitimacy to pharmacists to raise alcohol in medicines reviews. Sensitivity in talking about alcohol was linked to vulnerability to negative judgement. Discussion and Conclusions Changing the framing of alcohol in medicines reviews, away from being regarded as a ‘lifestyle issue’ to being considered a drug directly linked to medicines use, safety and effectiveness, was welcomed by participants in this study.

Scalable De Novo Synthesis of Aldgarose and Total Synthesis of Aldgamycin N

Since the accompanying study had shown that the introduction of the eponymous aldgarose sugar to the C5-OH group of the macrocyclic aglycone of aldgamycin N is most difficult, if not even impossible, the synthesis route was revised and the glycosidation performed at an earlier stage. To mitigate the cost of this strategic amendment, a practical and scalable de novo synthesis of this branched octose was developed. The glycoside formation required mild conditions; it commenced with the reaction of the aglycone with the trichloroacetimidate donor to give a transient orthoester, which slowly rearranged to the desired aldgaropyranoside. The presence of the polar peripheral groups in the product did not impede the selective late-stage functionalization of the macrolide ring itself: the contained propargylic alcohol entity was readily transformed into the characteristic acyloin motif of the target by a ruthenium-catalyzed trans-hydrostannation followed by a modified Chan-Lam-type coupling.

Enrichment and retention of key functional bacteria of partial denitrification-Anammox (PD/A) process via cell immobilization: A novel strategy for fast PD/A application

Cell immobilization was used to enrich and retain functional bacteria within partial denitrification-Anammox (PD/A) process to achieve its fast start-up for the first time. To do so, residue sludge and Anammox sludge were immobilized in poly (vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) gel for PD cultivation and Anammox bacteria inoculation, respectively. Stable PD with NO3–N to NO2–N transformation ratio (NTR) of 72.0% was achieved within 13 days at 25 degrees C and successfully combined with Anammox on 14th day. The hydrous porous PVA/ SA gel matrix played the role of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and thus protected the microbes against low temperature. Satisfactory nitrogen removal rate (NRR) (301.6 +/- 6.1 g N/(m(3).d)) was achieved even when temperature decreased to 13 degrees C. The contribution of nitrogen removal via Anammox was as high as 77.10%. Abundance of Thauera and Candidatus Kuenenia increased from 0.9% and 1.1% to 30.6% and 2.1%, respectively.

Alcohol substitution during one month of cannabis abstinence among non-treatment seeking youth

Objective: Cannabis and alcohol use are correlated behaviors among youth. It is not known whether discontinuation of cannabis use is associated with changes in alcohol use. This study assessed alcohol use in youth before, during, and after 4 weeks of paid cannabis abstinence. Methods: Healthy, non-treatment seeking, cannabis users (n = 160), aged 14-25 years, 84% of whom used alcohol in the last month, were enrolled for a 4-week study with a 2-4 week follow-up. Participants were randomly assigned to 4 weeks of either biochemically-verified cannabis abstinence achieved through a contingency management framework (CB-Abst) or monitoring with no abstinence requirement (CB-Mon). Participants were assessed at baseline and approximately 4, 6, 10, 17, 24, and 31 days after enrollment. A follow-up visit with no cannabis abstinence requirement for CB-Abst was conducted after 2-4 weeks. Results: Sixty percent of individuals assigned to the CB-Abst condition increased in frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption during the 4-week period of incentivized cannabis abstinence. As a whole, CB-Abst increased by a mean of 0.6 drinking days and 0.2 drinks per day in the initial week of abstinence (p’s < 0.006). There was no evidence for further increases in drinking frequency or quantity during the 30-day abstinence period (p's > 0.53). There was no change in drinking frequency or quantity during the 4-week monitoring or follow-up periods among CB-Mon. Conclusions: On average, 4 weeks of incentivized (i.e., paid) cannabis abstinence among non-treatment seeking youth was associated with increased frequency and amount of alcohol use in week 1 that was sustained over 4 weeks and resolved with resumption of cannabis use. However, there was notable variability in individual-level response, with 60% increasing in alcohol use and 23% actually decreasing in alcohol use during cannabis abstinence. Findings suggest that increased alcohol use during cannabis abstinence among youth merits further study to determine whether this behavior occurs among treatment seeking youth and its clinical significance.

Fine-tuning the architecture of loose nanofiltration membrane for improved water flux, dye rejection and dye/salt selective separation

Herein, loose nanofiltration membranes were prepared using non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. In NIPS, the non-solvent controls the morphology of the skin layer of the asymmetric membranes formed, while the solvent tunes the morphology of the lower layer. The membranes were made from polyethersulfone in n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) with the addition of dicarboxylic acids (glutaric acid, azelaic acid). Aliphatic alcohols (1-butanol, 1-octanol) were added to the solvent to tailor the skin layer pore morphology. Cross-sectional electron microscope images revealed the acids created nano-voids and shorter micro-voids. The addition of alcohols extended the micro-voids and improved symmetry. Pore size distribution results showed that the addition of the alcohols did indeed reduce the pore size as hypothesised. The performance of the modified polyethersulfone membranes was greatly improved in terms of pure water flux and salt passage without sacrificing the dye rejection. The loose nanofiltration membranes prepared in this study showed good dye/salt separation capability compared to most of the results reported in literature. The membranes were compacted with de-ionised water at an applied pressure of 4 bar for 5 h and rejections tests were done at 2 bar. It is hereby reported that the membranes achieved a high salt passage (Na2SO4 rejection varying between <3% and similar to 12%), as well as sustainable high Congo red rejection of 97%. Stability of Posttreatment Reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Risk Levels and Posttreatment Functioning in Older Adults with DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder: Secondary Data Analysis of the Elderly Study

Background Studies have found that reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) drinking risk levels may be a stable outcome of treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and associated with functional improvements. The aim of this study was to investigate whether posttreatment reductions in WHO drinking risk levels are stable over time among older adults and associated with a decrease in consequences of drinking and AUD symptoms and improved quality of life. Methods Participants. Individuals 60+ years old, suffering from DSM-5 AUD (n = 693), and seeking outpatient treatment. Measurements. WHO drinking risk levels, prior to treatment and at all follow-up points up to 1 year after treatment start, were assessed with Form 90. Outcomes at follow-up included consequences of drinking (Drinker Inventory of Consequences), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), and DSM-5 AUD symptoms (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). Logistic regression and linear mixed models were used to examine the probability of maintaining risk-level reductions at follow-up and the association between risk-level reductions and outcomes, respectively. Results Reductions in risk levels were maintained over time (at least 1 level: OR 5.39, 95% CI 3.43, 8.47; at least 2 levels: OR 9.30, 95% CI 6.14, 14.07). Reductions were associated with reduced consequences of drinking and number of AUD symptoms, and minor, but statistically significant, improvements in quality of life. Conclusions Maintaining reductions in WHO risk levels appears achievable for older adults seeking treatment for AUD. The small reduction of AUD symptoms and improvement of quality of life indicates that these reductions may not be adequate as the only treatment goal.
