6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) is a novel perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) alternative used globally in aqueous film forming foams (AFFFs). Although 6:2 FTSA has been recently detected in the environment, its fate in terrestrial invertebrates remains unclear. The uptake, elimination and biotransformation of 6:2 FTSA in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were investigated after in vivo and in vitro exposure. 6:2 FTSA could be biodegraded by microorganismsin soil to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), perfluoropropionic acid (PFPrA), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA). The uptake rate constant (k(u)) and biotato-soil accumulation factor (BSAF) of 6:2 FTSA in earthworms were 0.185 g(oc)/g(ww)/d and 0.685 g(oc)/g(ww), respectively, indicating high bioaccumulative ability in earthworms. Five terminal perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) metabolites, including TFA, PFPrA, PFBA, PFPeA and PFHxA were observed in both in vivo and in vitro exposure tests, with TFA as the predominant metabolite. However, no perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) was observed in the present study. The elimination rate constants (ke) increased in the order: 6:2 FTSA (0.057/d) < TFA (0.058/d) < PFPrA (0.071/d) < PFBA (0.084/d) < PFHxA (0.182/d) < PFPeA (0.193/d). Biodegradation of 6:2 FTSA in the earthworm homogenates, cytolchrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme solutions and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) enzyme solutions fitted well with the first order kinetics. The biotransformation rate constants (k) were in the following order: homogenates (0.012/h) > CYP450 (0.009/h) > GST (0.007/h), implying that CYP450 and GST were involved in biotransformation of 6:2 FTSA in earthworms. Enrichment and retention of key functional bacteria of partial denitrification-Anammox (PD/A) process via cell immobilization: A novel strategy for fast PD/A application

Comparative associations of problematic alcohol and cannabis use with suicidal behavior in US military veterans: A population-based study

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and cannabis use disorder (CUD) are each associated with increased suicidal behavior, but it is unclear how their comorbidity relates to suicide risk. Understanding these associations in U.S. military veterans is especially important, given their heightened risk for suicide, high prevalence of AUD, and increasing access to cannabis. We compared associations of probable AUD, CUD, and AUD/CUD with suicide ideation, plan(s), and attempt(s) in a nationally representative sample of 4,069 veterans surveyed in 2019-2020 as part of the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study. Among veterans who screened positive for current AUD, 8.7% also screened positive for current CUD. Among veterans who screened positive for current CUD, 33.3% screened positive for current AUD. Current and lifetime positive screens for AUD, CUD, and AUD/ CUD were each strongly and independently associated with past-year suicide ideation and lifetime suicide ideation, plan(s), and attempt(s) [odds ratios (ORs) = 1.6-8.7]. Relative to veterans who screened positive for AUD only, veterans who screened positive for AUD/CUD and CUD only had higher odds of past-year suicide ideation (AUD/CUD: OR = 3.3; CUD only: OR = 2.4), lifetime suicide ideation (AUD/CUD: OR = 1.9; CUD only: OR = 2.6) and lifetime suicide plan(s) (AUD/CUD: OR = 1.7; CUD only: OR = 6.1). Collectively, findings suggest that screening positive for CUD might be an especially strong indicator of suicide ideation and planning in veterans with and without AUD, independent of sociodemographic, military, trauma, and other psychiatric factors. These findings underscore the importance of routine screening for CUD in suicide prevention efforts, especially as cannabis becomes more widely available.

The interaction of exposure to adverse childhood and combat experiences on the current mental health of new post-9/11 veterans

Military veterans have greater exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) than civilians and many also encounter warfare exposures, which can increase the likelihood of mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to test an interaction between childhood traumas and warfare exposures on the mental health of a sample of nearly 10,000 new post-9/11 veterans. Results revealed that male veterans exposed to one or two ACEs, but no warfare, were more likely to experience anxiety, depression, suicidal thinking, and angry outbursts than the reference group (i.e., no ACEs and no warfare exposure). Female veterans exposed to one or two ACEs, but no warfare, were only more likely to experience suicidal thinking. Male and female veterans exposed to three or more ACEs and no warfare were more likely to experience probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, suicidality, and angry outbursts. Among those veterans who experienced corollaries of combat only (e.g., seeing someone killed or seriously wounded), male, but not female veterans were more likely to have probable PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Veterans exposed to warfare (i.e., combat and the corollaries of combat), irrespective of ACEs exposure, were the most likely to report mental health symptoms. Implications for community-based mental health services are discussed.

Electrochemical monitoring of alcohol in sweat

Rapid, periodic monitoring and detection of ethanol (EtOH) after consumption via a non-invasive measurement has been an area of increased research in recent years. Current point-of-care or on-site detection strategies rely on single use sensors which are inadequate for monitoring during a longer period. A low cost, portable and novel approach is developed here for real-time monitoring over several days utilising electrochemical techniques. The sensor shows oxidation of the ethanol in phosphate buffer and artificial sweat using the amperometric response from the application of +0.9 V to the polyaniline modified screen printed electrode using 1 mM EtOH as the averaged amount of EtOH eliminated in sweat after the consumption of one alcoholic beverage. Our enzyme based electrochemical sensor exhibits a qualitative assessment of the presence of EtOH in small volumes (<= 40 mu L) of 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate and subsequently artificial sweat, with 50 measurements taken daily over 11 days. While quantitative information is not obtained, the sensor system exhibits excellent stability after 3 months' dried storage in this complex biological matrix in an oxygen free cabinet. This addresses one of the key challenges for enzyme based electrochemical sensors, namely, the ability for real-time monitoring in complex biological matrices. The qualitative response illustrates the potential for this sensor to be exploited by non-experts which suggests the promise for their wider application in next-generation wearable electronics necessary for alcohol monitoring. Stability of Posttreatment Reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Risk Levels and Posttreatment Functioning in Older Adults with DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder: Secondary Data Analysis of the Elderly Study

Background Studies have found that reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) drinking risk levels may be a stable outcome of treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and associated with functional improvements. The aim of this study was to investigate whether posttreatment reductions in WHO drinking risk levels are stable over time among older adults and associated with a decrease in consequences of drinking and AUD symptoms and improved quality of life. Methods Participants. Individuals 60+ years old, suffering from DSM-5 AUD (n = 693), and seeking outpatient treatment. Measurements. WHO drinking risk levels, prior to treatment and at all follow-up points up to 1 year after treatment start, were assessed with Form 90. Outcomes at follow-up included consequences of drinking (Drinker Inventory of Consequences), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), and DSM-5 AUD symptoms (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). Logistic regression and linear mixed models were used to examine the probability of maintaining risk-level reductions at follow-up and the association between risk-level reductions and outcomes, respectively. Results Reductions in risk levels were maintained over time (at least 1 level: OR 5.39, 95% CI 3.43, 8.47; at least 2 levels: OR 9.30, 95% CI 6.14, 14.07). Reductions were associated with reduced consequences of drinking and number of AUD symptoms, and minor, but statistically significant, improvements in quality of life. Conclusions Maintaining reductions in WHO risk levels appears achievable for older adults seeking treatment for AUD. The small reduction of AUD symptoms and improvement of quality of life indicates that these reductions may not be adequate as the only treatment goal.

MoS2 doping by atomic layer deposition of high-k dielectrics using alcohol as process oxidants

We developed doping technique of transition metal dichalcogenides based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) of oxide thin films. In this study, we deposited ALD Al2O3 overlayer using various oxidant including iso-propyl alcohol (IPA) and ethanol and investigated the doping effects depending on the choice of oxidant for ALD process. The doping effects were investigated by the change in the performance of bottom-gated MoS2 field effect transistors. Experimental results indicate that Al2O3 overlayer deposited using IPA as ALD reactant produces more efficient n-type doping effect compared to ethanol. Moreover, doping was effectively controlled by modulating atomic layer deposition process. ALD process using effective oxidant material is expected to be practically used for realizing the fabrication of threshold voltage-controllable transistors or further applications such as diodes.

In this study, a novel in situ formed 3D conductive and cell-laden hydrogel is developed, which can be broadly used in bioprinting, tissue engineering, neuroengineering etc. An instantaneous, uniform spatial distribution and encapsulation of cells can be achieved as a result of hydrogen bonding induced hydrogel formation. Particularly, the cell-laden hydrogel can be easily obtained by simply mixing and shaking the polydopamine (PDA) functionalized rGO (rGO-PDA) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution containing cells. Graphene oxide is reduced and functionalized by dopamine to restore the electrical conductivity, while simultaneously enhancing both hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of reduced graphene oxide. In vitro culture of PC12 cells within the cell-laden hydrogel demonstrates its biocompatibility, noncytotoxicity as well as the ability to support long-term cell growth and proliferation. Enhanced neuronal differentiation is also observed, both with and without electrical stimulation. Overall, this 3D conductive, cell-laden hydrogel holds great promise as potential platform for tissue engineering of electroactive tissues.

Cellulose nanocrystalline hydrogel based on a choline chloride deep eutectic solvent as wearable strain sensor for human motion

Owning to the viscoelastic properties, good biocompatibility and high strain sensitivity, choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) hydrogels have been considered to be promising wearable strain sensors for human motion. However, traditional hydrogels are far away from the wearable strain sensor applications caused by their unsatisfied conductivity and weak mechanical properties. Herein, the strategy for functional ionic inorganic/organic interpenetrating (IPN) hydrogels preparation by cyclic freezing/thawing method was successfully developed. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was proposed to dissolve in choline chlorede-based DES as hydrogel matrix for the first time. Encouragingly, the obtained DES/PVA/CNCs/g-C3N4 hydrogel (choline chloride with glucose) exhibits excellent mechanical properties, included excellent tensile strength (approximate to 2.55 MPa), high elongation (approximate to 1200 %) and satisfactory tensile modulus (approximate to 3.65 MPa). Interestingly, the thermal diffusivity (the maximum value was 0.675 W/mK) and conductivity (the maximum value was 0.18 mm(2)/s) of the DES-hydrogels were successfully achieved through adding graphitic-like nitride nanosheet (g-C3N4) and sustainable cellulose nanocrystalline (CNCs). These enhancements were attributed to the synergistic interactions of powerful hydrogen bonding among DES, CNCs, g-C3N4 and PVA chains. More importantly, the as-prepared hydrogels have the potential as a human motion sensor to accurately in-situ detect human activities on the fingers, wrists, elbows and knee joints. Those hydrogel-type strain sensors with flexibility, excellent mechanical properties, self-recovery, good heat transfer, and electrical conductivity have broad application prospects in the fields of intelligent robot, bionic prostheses, and human care areas.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of symptomatic vertebral hemangioma with long-term follow-up

There is a paucity of literature on vertebroplasty in hemangioma. The effectiveness with short-term and long-term follow-up is an important insight for research. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and the long-term efficacy of vertebroplasty in the treatment of the patient with symptomatic vertebral hemangioma. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The outcome was evaluated by immediate post-procedure and 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years of follow-up clinical status of the patients. The significance was determined by using a paired t-test between the pre-procedure and post-procedure severity of pain, activity score, and analgesic. The P-value < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: A total of 38 vertebroplasties were performed in 34 patients. Additionally, the embolization of residual soft tissue was performed in 4 patient and Percutaneous alcohol injection for posterior elements involvement was performed in 9 patients. Immediate after the procedure, 44.12% of patients became asymptomatic, 38.23% of patients showed significant improvement, 11.77% of patients remained static and 2.94% of patients deteriorated and needed laminectomy. The complication rate was 29.4%, but only 2 patients were symptomatic and needed surgical decompression. There was significant relief of pain (P < 0.05), reduced analgesic intake (P < 0.05), and increased activity (P < 0.05) immediately after the procedure, 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years follow-up. Conclusion: PVP is an effective therapeutic option for the treatment of VH with fewer complications. The additional procedures like preprocedural embolization and percutaneous alcohol injection enhance the outcome and avoid complicated surgical interventions.
