Investigation of the intrinsic reaction kinetics and the mass transfer phenomena of nonanoic acid esterification with 2-ethylhexanol promoted by sulfuric acid or Amberlite IR120

Nonanoic acid is obtained as main coproduct in the synthesis of azelaic acid from oleic acid. The increase of azelaic acid production, being a monomer useful to synthesize biodegradable polyesters, lead to a high availability of nonanoic acid, that can be used as feedstock in esterification reactions to obtain lubricants and solvents. In this work, the esterification of nonanoic acid with 2-ethylhexanol to produce a solvent were conducted in a batch reactor in the presence of either a homogeneous (H2SO4) or an heterogenous catalyst (Amberlite IR120). The intrinsic reaction kinetics was investigated by considering all the physical and chemical phenomena occurring in the reaction network, leading to the determination of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The activation energy values of both catalysts are similar (approximate to 60 kJ/mol) and the enthalpy value of Delta H-r = 10.3 kJ/mol showed that the reaction is slightly endothermic. The reaction is shifted to the products as demonstrated by the reference equilibrium constant equal to 1.69 at 333 K. The obtained results will be useful to design industrial reactors.

A Facebook intervention to address cigarette smoking and heavy episodic drinking: A pilot randomized controlled trial

Background: Co-occurrence of tobacco use and heavy episodic drinking (HED; 5+ drinks for men and 4+ drinks for women per occasion) is common among young adults; both warrant attention and intervention. In a two-group randomized pilot trial, we investigated whether a Facebook-based smoking cessation intervention addressing both alcohol and tobacco use would increase smoking abstinence and reduce HED compared to a similar intervention addressing only tobacco. Methods: Participants were 179 young adults (age 18-25; 49.7% male; 80.4% non-Hispanic white) recruited from Facebook and Instagram who reported smoking 4+ days/week and past-month HED. The Smoking Tobacco and Drinking (STAND) intervention (N = 84) and the Tobacco Status Project (TSP), a tobacco-only intervention (N = 95), both included daily Facebook posts for 90 days and weekly live counseling sessions in private secret groups. We verified self-reported 7-day smoking abstinence via remote salivary cotinine tests at 3, 6, and 12 months (with retention at 83%, 66%, and 84%, respectively). Participants self-reported alcohol use. Results: At baseline, the participants averaged 10.4 cigarettes per day (SD = 6.9) and 8.9 HED occasions in the past month (SD = 8.1), with 27.4% in a preparation stage of change for quitting smoking cigarettes. Participants reported significant improvements in cigarette smoking and alcohol use outcomes over time, with no significant differences by condition. At 12 months, intent-to-treat smoking abstinence rates were 3.5% in STAND vs. 0% in TSP (biochemically verified) and 29.4% in STAND vs. 25.5% in TSP (self-reported). Compared to TSP, participants rated the STAND intervention more favorably for supporting health and providing useful information. Conclusions: Adding an alcohol treatment component to a tobacco cessation social media intervention was acceptable and engaging but did not result in significant differences by treatment condition in smoking or alcohol use outcomes. Participants in both conditions reported smoking and drinking less over time, suggesting covariation in behavioral changes.

Cotreatment of Small Gold Nanoparticles Protects Against the Increase in Cerebral Acetylcholinesterase Activity and Oxidative Stress Induced by Acute Ethanol Exposure in the Zebrafish

Gold nanoparticles (GNP) have emerged as an alternative to biomaterials in biomedical applications. Research has clearly demonstrated the relative safety and low toxicity of these molecules. However, the possible neuroprotective effect of GNP on the central nervous system (CNS) and its relationship with neurological and psychiatric disorders remain unclear. Zebrafish is a reliable model to investigate the impact of ethanol (EtOH) consumption on the CNS, including reward signaling such as the cholinergic neurotransmission system. Here, we investigated whether cotreatment or pretreatment with GNP prevented EtOH-induced changes in acetylcholinesterase activity and oxidative stress in the brain of zebrafish. We exposed adult zebrafish to 2.5 mg.L-1 GNP 1 h prior to EtOH (1% qv) treatment for 1 h, and cotreated adult zebrafish simultaneously with both substances for 1 h. Pretreatment with GNP did not prevent EtOH-induced increase in the acetylcholinesterase activity, whereas cotreatment with 2.5 mg.L-1 GNP and EtOH protected against this increase. The results also suggested similar protective effect on oxidative stress parameters in the zebrafish pretreated with GNP at 2.5 mg.L-1. GNP significantly decreased the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive species and dihydrodichloroflu-orescein levels when cotreated with EtOH. GNP also prevented EtOH-induced increase in superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, suggesting a modulatory role of GNP in enzymatic antioxidant defenses. Our results showed that GNP was able to modulate the disruption of cholinergic and oxidative homeostasis in the brain of zebrafish. These findings indicate for the first time that zebrafish is an interesting perspective to investigate nanoparticles against disorders related to alcohol abuse. (C) 2021 IBRO. Supramolecular architecture of a multi-component biomimetic lipid barrier formulation

Hypothesis: Biomimetic liquid crystalline systems are widely used in skin care cosmetics and topical pharmaceutical preparations. Our ability to rationally design such formulations, however, is hampered by our incomplete understanding of their structure on the nanoscale. The nature and composition of the phases identified are determined through small-angle neutron scattering studies using chain-deuterated components, and the detailed structure and dynamics of the gel network lamellae are determined through molecular dynamics simulations. Findings: The formulations show molecular ordering with long and short periodicity lamellar phases and there is little change in these structures caused by changes in temperature, drying, or the application of shear stress. The diol-free formulation is demonstrated to be self-preserving, and the added pentanediols are shown to distribute within the interlamellar regions where they limit availability of water for microbial growth. Reversible modifications of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-polymerization derived end groups are usually limited to reductive degradable disulfide conjugates. However, self-immolative linkers can promote ligation and traceless release of primary and secondary amines as well as alcohols via carbonates or carbamates in beta-position to disulfides. In this study, these two strategies are combined and the concept of self-immolative RAFT-polymer end group modifications is introduced: As model compounds, benzylamine, dibenzylamine, and benzyl alcohol are first attached as carbamates or carbonates to a symmetrical disulfide, and in a straightforward one-pot reaction these groups are reversibly attached to aminolyzed trithiocarbonate end groups of RAFT-polymerized poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide). Quantitative end group modification is confirmed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and mass spectrometry, while reversible release of attached compounds under physiological reductive conditions is successfully monitored by diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy and thin layer chromatography. Additionally, this concept is further expanded to protein-reactive, self-immolative carbonate species that enable reversible bioconjugation of lysozyme and alpha-macrophage mannose receptor (MMR) nanobodies as model proteins. Altogether, self-immolative RAFT end group modifications can form the new basis for reversible introduction of various functionalities to polymer chain ends including protein bioconjugates and, thus, opening novel opportunities for stimuli-responsive polymer hybrids.

Effect of absorbed dose on starch:PVA films irradiated with gamma rays

The films characterized by starch:PVA weight ratio equal to 45:55 were obtained by solution casting and irradiated with Co-60 gamma rays in vacuum applying doses of 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75 kGy. The results have shown that irradiation with a dose of 5 kGy induces decrease in surface hydrophilicity shown by increase in contact angle to water with no special impact of using the higher doses. Tensile strength was not affected by irradiation performed with doses in all the range of 5-75 kGy, however using doses of 20 kGy or higher might result in decrease in the films’ flexibility. Decrease in capacity to swell in water accompanied by increase in solubility of the material was also observed after irradiation. A reduced gel content together with an increased solubility of the irradiated material have shown that degradation prevails over crosslinking under gamma irradiation. It can be concluded that radiation modification carried out with gamma rays using doses up to 10 kGy may find application in manufacturing better films in the starch:PVA system, and that using doses of 5 kGy is sufficiently effective for this purpose. Simultaneously, the starch:PVA (45:55) films turn out to be suitable for packing of food intended for radiation decontamination using doses up to 10 kGy.

Chromoselective Photocatalysis Enables Stereocomplementary Biocatalytic Pathways**

Controlling the selectivity of a chemical reaction with external stimuli is common in thermal processes, but rare in visible-light photocatalysis. Here we show that the redox potential of a carbon nitride photocatalyst (CN-OA-m) can be tuned by changing the irradiation wavelength to generate electron holes with different oxidation potentials. This tuning was the key to realizing photo-chemo-enzymatic cascades that give either the (S)- or the (R)-enantiomer of phenylethanol. In combination with an unspecific peroxygenase from Agrocybe aegerita, green light irradiation of CN-OA-m led to the enantioselective hydroxylation of ethylbenzene to (R)-1-phenylethanol (99 % ee). In contrast, blue light irradiation triggered the photocatalytic oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone, which in turn was enantioselectively reduced with an alcohol dehydrogenase from Rhodococcus ruber to form (S)-1-phenylethanol (93 % ee).

AimThis study aimed to examine if there is an interaction between alcohol use and human development in terms of their associations with alcohol-attributable health harms. Human development was measured using the HDI, a summary score of life expectancy, education and gross national income from the United Nations Development Programme. Interactions between HDI and adult per-capita consumption (APC) affecting alcohol-attributable harms were assessed using likelihood ratio tests. Differences in alcohol-attributable harms per litre of APC between HDI groups were assessed using regression analyses and a reference group of low HDI. FindingsAPC is associated with alcohol-attributable deaths, YLL, YLDs and DALYs lost, while HDI is associated with alcohol-attributable deaths, YLL and DALYs lost. Statistical analyses indicated there is an interaction between HDI and APC in their associations with alcohol-attributable deaths, YLL and DALYs lost per 100000 people. The alcohol-attributable burden was highest in low HDI countries, with 11.65 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 10.75, 12.40] deaths and 495.61 (95% CI = 461.83, 569.23) DALYs lost per 100000 people per litre of APC, and lowest in very high HDI countries, with 4.15 (95% CI = 2.46, 5.71) deaths and 200.31 (95% CI = 122.78, 265.10) DALYs lost per 100000 people per litre of APC. However, no statistical differences between low and very high HDI groupings for these burdens were observed. ConclusionsThere appears to be an interaction between the Human Development Index and alcohol use in their associations with alcohol-attributable deaths, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life years lost but not with alcohol-attributable years lived with disability. Alcohol appears to have a stronger harmful impact per litre of alcohol consumed in lesser developed countries than in developed countries.

Gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease are strongly associated with non-allergic nasal disorders

Background Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been reported to be significantly associated with chronic rhinosinusitis, but the strength of the association is still debated. Aims To evaluate the strength of the association between gastritis/GERD and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR)/allergic rhinitis (AR)/sinusitis. Methods We investigated 2887 subjects aged 20-84 years, who underwent a clinical visit in seven Italian centres (Ancona, Palermo, Pavia, Terni, Sassari, Torino, Verona) within the study on Gene Environment Interactions in Respiratory Diseases, a population-based multicase-control study between 2008 and 2014. Subjects were asked if they had doctor-diagnosed gastritis or stomach ulcer (confirmed by gastroscopy) or gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernia or esophagitis. The association between NAR/AR/sinusitis and either gastritis or GERD was evaluated through relative risk ratios (RRR) by multinomial logistic regression. Results The prevalence of gastritis/GERD increased from subjects without nasal disturbances (22.8% = 323/1414) to subjects with AR (25.8% = 152/590) and further to subjects with NAR (36.7% = 69/188) or sinusitis (39.9% = 276/691). When adjusting for centre, sex, age, education level, BMI, smoking habits and alcohol intake, the combination of gastritis and GERD was associated with a four-fold increase in the risk of NAR (RRR = 3.80, 95% CI 2.56-5.62) and sinusitis (RRR = 3.70, 2.62-5.23) with respect to controls, and with a much smaller increase in the risk of AR (RRR = 1.79, 1.37-2.35).. Conclusion The study confirmed the association between gastritis/GERD and nasal disturbances, which is stronger for NAR and sinusitis than for AR.

Construction of graphene oxide membrane through non-covalent cross-linking by sulfonated cyclodextrin for ultra-permeable butanol dehydration

Two-dimensional (2D) lamellar graphene oxide (GO) membranes represent promising porous materials in alcohol dehydration. The separation performance can be manipulated by the physicochemical properties of interlayer channels. The relatively low flux and poor stability of GO-based membranes in aqueous environment are the major drawbacks. Herein, we intercalated a supramolecular compound, sulfobutyl-beta-cyclodextrin (SCD), into the interlayer pores/channels of GO membranes. The sulfonic acid groups on SCD molecules are able to cross-link adjacent GO nanosheets through non-covalent interactions. The GO-SCD membranes possess excellent water affinity due to the presence of high hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups. For the n-butanol dehydration, the GO-SCD/PTFE membranes with well-defined interlayer pores exhibited ultrahigh permeation flux of 12955 g m(-2) and separation factor of 1299 under 80 degrees C. The membranes remained stable in 144 h separation performance evaluation test and exhibited obviously enhanced thermal stability.
