Exposure to light at night (LAN) and risk of breast cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: With the unprecedented urbanization light pollution has emerged as a ubiquitous problem, and there has been accumulating evidence on the links between exposure to light at night (LAN) and breast cancer risk. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on the associations between LAN exposure and breast cancer risk. Methods: We included all observational human studies wherein the exposure variable was LAN measured in indoor and outdoor environments, and the outcomewas breast cancer. Weemployed summary relative risks (SRR) for breast cancer by comparing highest versus lowest categories of LAN exposure within a random-effectsmodel. The National Toxicology Program’s (NTP) Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) risk of bias rating toolwas adopted to assess the risk of bias in individual studies and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) guideline was employed to assess confidence in the body of evidence. Results: A total 14 studies comprising four cohorts (13,155 cases among 372,802 exposed subjects), nine casecontrol and one case-referent studies of female subjects (39,462 cases and 20,739 controls) across seven countries and published between 2001 and 20 were included for review. Participants in the highest LAN exposure category were associated with higher risk of breast cancer in reference to those in the lowest (SRR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.06-1.18; I-2=39% for outdoor LAN, and SRR: 1.13; 95%CI: 1.05-1.21; I-2=19% for indoor LAN). Pooled evidence identified relatively pronounced association of outdoor LAN exposure and breast cancer amongwomen with estrogen receptor positive (ER+) tumor (SRR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.04-1.40) and premenopausal status (SRR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.06-1.37). The final rate of confidence in the body of evidence generated was graded as `moderate’ based on GRADE guideline. Integrated approaches to testing and assessment as a tool for the hazard assessment and risk characterization of cosmetic preservatives

The safety assessment of cosmetic products is based on the safety of the ingredients, which requires information on chemical structures, toxicological profiles, and exposure data. Approximately 6% of the population is sensitized to cosmetic ingredients, especially preservatives and fragrances. In this context, the aim of this study was to perform a hazard assessment and risk characterization of benzalkonium chloride (BAC), benzyl alcohol (BA), caprylyl glycol (CG), ethylhexylglycerin (EG), chlorphenesin (CP), dehydroacetic acid (DHA), sodium dehydroacetate (SDH), iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC), methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MIT), methylisothiazolinone (MIT), phenoxyethanol (PE), potassium sorbate (PS), and sodium benzoate (SB). Considering the integrated approaches to testing and assessment (IATA) and weight of evidence (WoE) as a decision tree, based on published safety reports. The hazard assessment was composed of a toxicological matrix correlating the toxicity level, defined as low (L), moderate (M), or high (H) and local or systemic exposure, considering the endpoints of skin sensitization, skin irritation, eye irritation, phototoxicity, acute oral toxicity, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity/genotoxicity, and endocrine activity. Infrared stealth nanofibrous composite with thermal stability and mechanical flexibility

Materials with low infrared emissivity, good thermal stability and mechanical performance are of major concern for the infrared stealth technology. By electrospinning technology, three layers of CNT/Al/PA6 were deposited alternatively with three layers of polyurethane PU (termed as [(CNT/Al/PA6)/PU](3). To improve the thermal stability, a layer of poly (vinyl alcohol)/silica (PVA/SiO2) was also electrospun and sintered, which was sandwiched between the surface layer of [(CNT/Al/PA6)/PU](3) and the bottom layer of PU. The layered composite of [(CNT/Al/PA6)/PU](3)-PVA/SiO2-PU presents a low infrared emissivity of 0.71, and good thermal stability as revealed by change of the thermal infrared images with time on a hot stage. Uniaxial tensile tests also reveal the mechanical flexibility for the composite. The combined durable infrared stealth performance and excellent mechanical properties infrared stealth and mechanical behavior render the layered composite great potential in the infrared stealth camouflage applications. Fe-Catalyzed Anaerobic Mukaiyama-Type Hydration of Alkenes using Nitroarenes

Hydration of alkenes using first row transition metals (Fe, Co, Mn) under oxygen atmosphere (Mukaiyama-type hydration) is highly practical for alkene functionalization in complex synthesis. Different hydration protocols have been developed, however, control of the stereoselectivity remains a challenge. Herein, highly diastereoselective Fe-catalyzed anaerobic Markovnikov-selective hydration of alkenes using nitroarenes as oxygenation reagents is reported. The nitro moiety is not well explored in radical chemistry and nitroarenes are known to suppress free radical processes. Our findings show the potential of cheap nitroarenes as oxygen donors in radical transformations. Secondary and tertiary alcohols were prepared with excellent Markovnikov-selectivity. The method features large functional group tolerance and is also applicable for late-stage chemical functionalization. The anaerobic protocol outperforms existing hydration methodology in terms of reaction efficiency and selectivity.

The carbon footprint of alternative jet fuels produced in Brazil: exploring different approaches

Although the potential of Alternative Jet Fuels (AJF) to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions has been widely reported upon in the literature, there are still discrepancies among the results. These may be due to the different GHG accounting methods, including those used by different Low-Carbon Policies (LCPs). To have a clearer understanding of the life cycle performance of AJF, the carbon footprint of ten pathways was estimated, comprising promising feedstocks – such as soybean, palm, sugarcane, sugarcane residues, forestry residues, used cooking oil, beef tallow, and steel off-gases – and ASTM-approved technologies: Hydroprocessed Fatty Acids, Alcohol-to-Jet, and Fischer-Tropsch. Six methodological approaches were used: the attributional and the consequential life cycle assessment, as well as guidelines for the four LCPs: Renovabio (Brazil), CORSIA (aviation sector), RFS (United States), and RED II (Europe). Soybean-based pathway (24 to 98.7 gCO(2e)/MJ) had the low to no potential for reducing GHG when compared to their fossil counterparts, mainly due to land use change. Of all food-based pathways, AJF produced from sugarcane performed the best (-10.4 to 43.7 gCO(2e)/MJ), especially when power surplus was credited. AJF from palm oil could present significant GHG reduction for palm expansion in degraded pasturelands. By contrast, Fischer-Tropsch of lignocellulosic residues showed the highest potential for reducing GHG (-95% to -130%). Different from food-based pathways, the potential GHG reduction of residues-based pathways converged within a narrower range (-130% to -50%), except when residual feedstocks have to be redirected from their current economic use. It could lead to GHG emissions higher than fossil fuel.

Ion transfer channel network formed by flower and rod shape crystals of hair hydrolysate in poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix and its application as anion exchange membrane in fuel cells

Ion transfer phenomena occurring in nature are known to be most efficient. Many efforts have been made to mimic such phenomena, especially in the area of energy transfer. Proteins consisting of various amino acids are known to be the fundamental materials behind these phenomena. In the current study, an effort was made to extract proteinaceous material from human hair bio-waste by a green chemical-free thermal hydrolysis process. A simple heat treatment of the human hairs in presence of water led to the formation of a water soluble material, which was called hair hydrolysate (HH), contains 70 wt% proteinaceous material. It was utilized for the fabrication of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix-based anion exchange membrane (AEM). Presence of 27 wt% charged amino acids and 19 wt% polarizable amino acids in the HH provided effective charge transfer sites. 7 wt% arginine present in the HH, having continuous delocalized net positive charge helped the membrane to be stable in highly alkaline conditions, which was confirmed by an indirect analysis of alkaline stability. Formation of rod and flower shaped crystal morphology by the HH in glutaraldehyde crosslinked PVA matrix, created a continuous channel network at higher loadings, which provided a simple path for ion transfer, achieving OHconductivity of 7.46 mS/cm at 70 degrees C. Swelling of the PVA matrix was minimized by annealing of the HH loaded sample, which resulted in reduction of ionic conductivity to 6.16 mS/cm (at 70 degrees C). At the same time, improvement in the properties like increase in thermal, mechanical and thermo-mechanical stability, reduction in water uptake, %swelling and methanol permeability was observed. The selectivity of the membrane was increased to almost a decimal place. Thus, the HH obtained from simple green thermal hydrolysis of human hair bio-waste is a cheap material, which is found to be suitable as ion conductive material for alkaline fuel cells. Differences in use of inhalants among sexual minorities in the USA in 2015-2018

Objectives: Inhalants are substances with underestimated abuse potential associated with cardiac problems, dizziness, seizures, and decreased level of consciousness. Inhalants are commonly used by the LGB population, who are vulnerable to their harms. US epidemiologic inhalants data are scarce. The aims of this study are to: i) investigate associations between inhalant use and sexual identity groups; ii) examine associations with use of other drugs among lesbian/gays who use inhalants. Methods: Data came from the 2015-2018 NSDUH (n = 168,560). Participants ages 18 or older were asked if they had used any inhalants in their lifetime and past-year. We investigated the associations between inhalant use with sexual identity categories heterosexual, lesbian/gay, and bisexual using logistic regression models with complex survey design. Results: Total prevalences of lifetime and past-year use of inhalants were 9.4% and 0.5%, respectively. Lesbian/ gay population (L/G) and bisexuals (B) reported higher odds of lifetime (L/G: aOR = 3.71, 95%CI = [3.19,4.30], B: aOR = 1.82, 95%CI = [1.64,2.03) and past-year (L/G: aOR = 11.57, 95%CI = [8.95,14.96], B: aOR = 2.81, 95%CI = [2.02,3.92]) inhalant use compared to heterosexuals. Among L/G, men had higher odds of lifetime (aOR = 4.11, 95%CI = [3.06,5.52]) and past-year (aOR = 15.67, 95%CI = [7.27,33.76]) inhalant use versus women. Use of marijuana (aOR = 2.76, 95%CI = [1.48,5.16]), other illegal drugs (aOR = 2.70, 95%CI = [1.60,4.56]), and non-medical use of psychotherapeutics (aOR = 2.67, 95%CI = 1.77,4.05) were associated with past-year use of inhalants among L/G. Conclusion: LGB population is at elevated risk of inhalant use and of concurrent use with other drugs. Gay men had significantly higher odds of inhalant use compared to lesbians and bisexuals. Informative and in-site harm reduction measures are warranted to prevent harms from inhalant use.

Key aroma-active compounds in brown sugar and their influence on sweetness

Brown sugar (non-centrifugal cane sugar) is popular for its pleasant caramel-like aroma and sweetness. Vacuum simultaneous steam distillation and extraction (V-SDE) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to study the volatile fraction of brown sugar. To further determine the aroma-active compounds in brown sugar, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O) were used in conjunction with aroma extraction dilution analysis (AEDA), odor activity values (OAVs), and sensory evaluation to analyze the effects of the key aroma-active compounds on sweetness. A total of 37 aroma-active compounds were obtained, mainly including ketones, pyrazines, alkanes, phenols and alcohols, which contributed caramel, sweet and fruity notes to brown sugar. Among them, furfural, benzeneacetaldehyde, 2,3-butanedione, beta-damascenone, 2-methoxyphenol, dihydro-2-methyl-3(2H)-furanone, 2-furanmethanol and butyrolactone could significantly enhance the sweetness of sugar solution because of the congruency of the aroma attributes and sweetness.

At 15C a solution of 380 g (2,53 mol) 2-methyl-1 -phenyl-propan-2 -ol and 426 g (4,3 mol) ethyl cyanoformate in 500 ml cyclohexane has been added to a mixture of 500 ml cyclohexane and 1899 g (19 mol) concentrated sulfuric acid upon stirring. After ca. 15 min the reaction mixture was poured onto an ice/water mixture and cautiously basified upon addition of concentrated NaOH-solution. The phases were separated and the aqeous layer was extracted twice with me- thyl-t-butylether. The combined organic phases were dried over sodium sulfate and ant volatiles were evaporated to yield 584 g (99 %) ethyl 3,3-dimethyl-4H-isoquinoline-1-carboxylate as a yellow oil. 1H-NMR (CDCIs, d in ppm): 7,55 (d, 1H); 7,4 (t, 1H); 7,3 (t, 1H); 7,18 (d, 1H); 4,45 (q, 2H); 2,75 (s, 2H); 1,4 (t, 3H); 1,28 (s, 6H)
