41 g of ibuprofen was dissolved in 200 ml of ethyl acetate. 16 mL of thionyl chloride was added into the mixture. The mixture was refluxed for 2 h. Sodium sulfate was removed by filtration and washed with ethyl acetate (3×100 mL). Anhydrous HCl gas (10 g) was bubbled into the mixture. The solid was collected and washed with ethyl acetate.
