4-Methoxy-2,6-dimethylbenzenesulfonyl chloride (12 g, 51 mmol) is added to a solution of 2- (methylamino)ethanol (4.6 mL, 61 mmoi), diisopropyl ethyl amine (22 mL, 130 mmol), and CH2Cl2 (130 mL) under N2. The reaction vessel is sealed and left to stir for 21 h. The solution is washed with 1 :1 sat. aq. NH4C.: H2O (2 X 200 mL) and brine (200 mL). The aqueous layers are extracted with CH2Cl2 (200 mL).
