Tosyl chloride (22.3 g, 117 mmol) was added in portions to a stirring solution of 3-{2-[2-(2-hydroxy-ethoxy)-ethoxy]-ethoxy}-propionic acid tert-butyl ester (16.3 g, 58.6 mmol) and pyridine 60 mL in (240 mL) and the mixture was stirred overnight. The reaction was quenched with water (300 mL) and the organic layer was separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with CH2Cl2 (2*100 mL). The combined organic layer was washed with HCl (1N, 100 mL), water (100 mL), and dried over Na2SO4 and the solvent was removed in vacuo to give an oil which corresponds to the title compound that would be used as is for the next step.
