The present study investigated the phytochem. constituents of Semiliquidambar chingii for the first time, resulting in the isolation and characterization of nineteen compounds which were categorized into eight groups as resveratrol derivatives (1-4), triterpenoids (5-10), flavonoids (11-13), phenolic glycosides (14-15), lignan (16), ellagic acid derivative (17), coniferyl alc. derivative (18), and shikimic acid derivative (19). The chem. structures of these compounds were elucidated based on the careful anal. of spectroscopic data and comparison with reported data. This is the first report of isolation of compounds 1-19 from S. chingii and compounds 1-4, 5-7, 9-11, and 14-19 within the genus Semiliquidambar. Furthermore, the chemotaxonomic significance of the isolates was discussed in detail, which might provide important chem. taxonomic evidence supporting the hybrid origin of Semiliquidambar from the genera Altingia and Liquidambar.
