From the hexane extract of the stem Unona lawii three flavanones were isolated and two of these identified as demethoxymatteucinol (I) and demethoxymatteucinol 7-methyl ether (II). On the basis of spectral and synthetic evidence, a new flavanone designated as lawinal is 5,7-dihydroxy-6-formyl-8-methylflavanone (III). The three isomeric compounds C25H20O5 (M+ 400) obtained in the reaction of methylphloroglucinol and cinnamoyl chloride were characterized as IV, V and VI.
