Herein, the sulfhydrylation and oxylation of olefins RCH=CH2 (R = Ph, 4-methoxyphenyl, 3-methylphenyl, etc.) and 1H-indene were completed under visible light irradiation with iodine as catalyst, which realized more economical and green chem. conversion because of the absence of metal complexes or organic dyes. A series of bifunctional modifications of olefins were achieved with good yields RCH(O(CH2)nOH)CH2SR1 (R1 = 4-chlorophenyl, 2,4-dimethylphenyl, 3-methylphenyl, etc.; n = 2, 3, 4, 5) and RCH(OH)CH2SR1 by using diol derivatives OH(CH2)nOH, 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethan-1-ol and water as nucleophiles. In addition, the control experiments show that the reaction is a free radical process.
