Herein we report an exclusively ligand-centered redox controlled approach for the dehydrogenation of a variety of N-heterocycles using a Zn(II)-stabilized azo-anion radical complex as the catalyst. A simple, easy-to-prepare, and bench-stable Zn(II)-complex (1b) featuring the tridentate arylazo pincer, 2-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline, in the presence of zinc-dust, undergoes reduction to form the azo-anion radical species [1b]which efficiently dehydrogenates various saturated N-heterocycles such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-methylquinoline, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-isoquinoline, indoline, 2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazole, 2,3-dihydro-2-phenylquinazolin-4(1H)-one, and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-phenylquinazolines, among others, under air. The catalyst has further been found to be compatible with the cascade synthesis of these N-heterocycles via dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with other suitable coupling partners under air. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the dehydrogenation reactions proceed via a one-electron hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway where the zinc-stabilized azo-anion radical ligand abstracts the hydrogen atom from the organic substrate(s), and the whole catalytic cycle proceeds via the exclusive involvement of the ligand-centered redox events where the zinc acts only as the template.

The development of new catalytic processes based on abundantly available starting materials by cheap metals is always a fascinating task and marks an important transition in the chemical industry. Herein, a nickel-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with nitriles followed by decyanation of nitriles to access diversely substituted olefins is reported. This unprecedented C=C bond-forming methodology takes place in a tandem manner with the formation of formamide as a sole byproduct. The significant advantages of this strategy are the low-cost nickel catalyst, good functional group compatibility (ether, thioether, halo, cyano, ester, amino, N/O/S heterocycles; 43 examples), synthetic convenience, and high reaction selectivity and efficiency.

Noble-metal-free photocatalysts with high and stable performance provide an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient route for green organic synthesis. In this work, CdS nanoparticles with small particle size and different amount were successfully deposited on the surface of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The deposition of suitable content of CdS on COFs could not only modify the light adsorption ability and the intrinsic electronic properties, but also enhance the photocatalytic activity and cycling performance of CdS for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols under visible light. Especially, COF/CdS-3 exhibited the highest yield (97.1%) of benzaldehyde which is approximately 2.5 and 15.9 times as that of parental CdS and COF, respectively. The results show that the combination of CdS and COF can improve the utilization of visible light and the separation of photo-generated charge carriers, and COF with the pi-conjugated system as supports for CdS nanoparticles could provide efficient electron transport channels and improve the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, this kind of COF-supported photocatalysts with accelerated photo-induced electrons and charge-carrier separation between semiconductors possesses great potentials in future green organic synthesis. Selective conversion of biomass-derived alcohols into carbonyl compounds via visible-light photocatalysis is realized over hierarchical hollow WO3 microspheres with tailored surface oxygen vacancies, which presents the remarkably boosted photoactivity in terms of selectivity and activity, intrinsically attributing to the strong synergetic effect of hierarchical spherical cavity and surface oxygen vacancies simultaneously. The hierarchical spherical cavity, substantially constructed by the self-interconnected nanosheets, enhances the light-harvesting ability via multiple light reflections not only in spherical cavity but also among the self-interconnected nanosheets. Surface oxygen vacancies favor the energy band gap narrowing via forming a miniband just below the conduction band and then extend the photoresponse region, further boosting the light-harvesting ability. Importantly, surface oxygen vacancies function as the electron sinks to capture photoelectrons and thus restrict their recombination probability with holes, finally improving the photoelectron-hole separation efficiency. Meanwhile, this photocatalyst presents excellent reusability, showing its promising potential in practical applications. This work sheds light on a new application of hierarchical WO3 microspheres with tailored surface oxygen vacancies and its strong synergetic effect of hierarchical structures and surface oxygen vacancies on photocatalytic performance, delivering new insights for rationally designing highly active photocatalysts applied in future green and sustainable organic transformation reactions.

Direct conversion of carboxylic acids to ureas, carbamates, and thiocarbamates in a single pot via Curtius rearrangement is accomplished. One recently established coupling reagent, Ethyl-2-cyano-2-(2-nitrophenylsulfonyloximino)acetate (ortho-NosylOXY, I), is successfully used for the racemization free synthesis of ureas, di-peptidyl ureas, and carbamates with moderate to good yield (82-69%). This single-pot hassle-free procedure works with a diverse range of N-protecting groups Fmoc, Boc, and Cbz. Various amine, including aromatic, methyl esters of amino acids, t-butylamine, alcohols, and thiols, are used as nucleophiles. A detailed NMR-based mechanism study is incorporated here. Racemization suppression, easy removal of by-products, and less waste generation make this methodology useful.

In this work, ruthenium(II)-catalyzed C-C/C-N annulation of 2-arylquinazolinones with vinylene carbonate is reported to synthesize fused quinazolinones. This catalytic system tolerates a wide range of substrates with excellent functional-group compatibility. In this transformation, the vinylene carbonate acts as an ethynol surrogate without any external oxidant involved. Furthermore, preliminary mechanistic studies were conducted, and a plausible catalytic cycle was also proposed.

The development of eco-friendly and low cost catalysts is challenging. Here, heterostructures of Bi2S3 quantum dots (QDs) doped onto ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method to exploit efficient photosensitizers with appropriate electronic states to enhance the transfer of electrons. The obtained Bi2S3-BiOCl showed highly efficient photocatalytic ability for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes. More oxygen vacancies are formed on the exposed 001 facet of the ultrathin BiOCl, which can effectively trap electrons and form O-.(2)- radicals. The cooperation between the BiOCl and the Bi2S3 QDs effectively separates photogenerated electron-hole pairs at the heterointerface and facilitates the cooperative actions of O-.(2)- radicals and holes, which brings about a desirable photocatalytic eciency for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols. This work highlights the synergistic effect of semiconductor QDs and two-dimensional materials on selective conversion processes and provides a new design paradigm using noble metal-free heteromaterials with high photocatalytic activity. This opens new possibilities for photocatalyst design using heteromaterials with high photocatalytic activity.

Supercritical CO2 was used for the production of extracts from Acacia dealbata flowers. Pressures from 10 to 35 MPa and temperatures from 35? to 55?C were studied to assess their influence on the yield, antiradical properties and composition of the volatiles. The use of ethanol as modifier was also evaluated. Operating at 30 MPa and 45 ?C with 10% ethanol, up to 15% of the ethanol extractables were obtained in 3 h. The selectivity towards alcohol type compounds decreased with time and was enhanced in a sequence of static extraction with pure and ethanol modified CO2 followed by a dynamic stage. The most active fractions showed ABTS radical scavenging activity of 0.22 g Trolox/g extract. Different mathematical models were used to describe the kinetic data. The most abundant compounds in the supercritical extracts were oxygenated triterpenes whereas in conventional ethanolic extracts the main constituents were aliphatic compounds.

New types of C-2-symmetric chiral macrodiolides are readily obtained via chiral N,N ‘-dioxide-scandium(iii) complex-promoted asymmetric tandem Friedel-Crafts alkylation/intermolecular macrolactonization of ortho-quinone methides with C3-substituted indoles. This protocol provides an array of enantioenriched macrodiolides with 16, 18 or 20-membered rings in moderate to good yields with high diastereoselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities through adjusting the length of the tether at the C3 position of indoles. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the formation of macrocycles is more favorable than that of 9-membered-ring lactones in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics. The potential utility of these intriguing chiral macrodiolide molecules is demonstrated in the enantiomeric recognition of aminols and chemical recognition of metal ions.
