Yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN) sources play an important role in the formation of higher alcohols in wine. In this study, the types and amounts of YAN sources and the genes that regulate the synthesis of higher alcohols in a yeast used for huangjiu brewing, Saccharomyces cerevisiae HJ, were assessed for the first time. Quantitative realtime PCR experiments demonstrated that S. cerevisiae HJ genes controlling the production of higher alcohols were expressed at significantly different levels during different growth stages and at different YAN levels, indicating that YAN significantly impacts the total higher alcohols concentration of huangjiu. Ammonium salts especially NH4Cl showed greater effect in reducing the content of higher alcohols than amino acids or urea. After optimization, the addition of NH4Cl (200 mg/L) most effectively reduced the content of higher alcohols at the end of fermentation with little effect on the cell growth rate, final cell density and ethanol concentration. Total higher alcohols decreased by 39%, while the concentrations of isobutanol, isoamylol and 2-phenylethanol decreased by 47%, 28%, and 44%, respectively. The addition of NH4Cl promoted the formation of esters and enriched the amino acids in huangjiu. This study provides a new insight to control the quality of huangjiu, especially the content of higher alcohols based on the strategy of adding NH4Cl.

Progress in alcohol-gasoline blends and their effects on the performance and emissions in SI engines under different operating conditions

Bio-alcohol has the potential to be used as an alternative to fossil fuels to reduce the total exhaust emissions from spark-ignition engines. This paper reviewed the most recent experimental studies on fundamental effects of performance, emissions and some combustion characteristics in SI engines. It also provides a guideline for suitable ethanol-gasoline and methanol-gasoline blend rates. Investigations were performed on different engines, operating conditions and rates of fuel blends with varying engine speeds. Most of the results showed that ethanol-gasoline has more benefits compared to methanol-gasoline in terms of exhaust emissions, engine power, and torque output, especially at low engine speed. The small differences in properties between ethanol-gasoline and methanol-gasoline blends are enough to create a significant change in the combustion system. These effects lead to behavioural mechanisms which are not easy to analyze or understand, sometimes make it difficult to identify the fundamentals of how ethanol or methanol affects emissions.

Design of polymeric core-shell carriers for combination therapies

Particle engineering for co-delivery of drugs has the potential to combine multiple drugs with different pharmaceutical mechanisms within the same carrier, increasing the therapeutic efficiency while improving patient compliance. This work proposes a novel approach for producing polymer-polymer core-shell microparticles by multi-step processing of emulsion and spray drying. The particle core was obtained by an oil-in-water emulsion of poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) loaded with curcumin (CM), followed by the resuspension in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) containing ciprofloxacin (CPx) forming the shell layer by spray-drying. The obtained core-shell particles showed an average size of 3.8 +/- 1.2 mu m, which is a suitable size for inhalation therapies. The spatial distribution of the drugs was studied using synchrotron-based macro attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (macro ATR-FTIR) microspectroscopy to map the chemical distribution of the components within the particles and supported the presence of CM and CPx in the core and shell layers, respectively. The formation of the core-shell structure was further supported by the differences in the release profile of CM from these particles, when compared to the release profile observed for the single particle structure (PCL-CM). Both empty and drug-loaded carriers (up to 100 mu g.mL(-1)) showed no cytotoxic effects on A549 cells while exhibiting the antibacterial activity of CPx against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. These polymer core-shell microparticles provide a promising route for the combination and sequential drug release therapies, with the potential to be used in inhalation therapies. Preliminary study of the effect of cation-exchange resin treatment on the aging of tempranillo red wines

This research reports the effect of the cation exchange treatment in Tempranillo wines during the aging period in oak barrels. The control wine and the mixtures with different percentages (5, 10 and 20%) of wine treated by a cation exchange resin (permeate wine) were evaluated. In general, a greater acidity, color and tartaric stability, and a lower mineral content were observed in the treated wines, especially in those with 20% of permeate wine. In addition, during the entire aging time, the decrease in potassium and magnesium cations stood out. A higher concentration of aromatic compounds such as hexyl acetate, isobutanol, 2-phenylethyl alcohol, ethyl isovalerate and diethyl succinate was observed in treated wines after six months of aging. The two last compounds reached the highest concentrations when the percentage of permeated increased and reached values up to 23 Ig/L for ethyl isovalerate and up to 3186 Ig/L for diethyl succinate. In addition, the perception thresholds of these esters were exceeded in all wines. The use of cation exchange resins seems to be an effective industrial alternative to produce balanced red aged wines in a climate change scenario.

Selectively Upgrading Lignin Derivatives to Carboxylates through Electrochemical Oxidative C(OH)-C Bond Cleavage by a Mn-Doped Cobalt Oxyhydroxide Catalyst

Oxidative cleavage of C(OH)-C bonds to afford carboxylates is of significant importance for the petrochemical industry and biomass valorization. Here we report an efficient electrochemical strategy for the selective upgrading of lignin derivatives to carboxylates by a manganese-doped cobalt oxyhydroxide (MnCoOOH) catalyst. A wide range of lignin-derived substrates with C(OH)-C or C(O)-C units undergo efficient cleavage to corresponding carboxylates in excellent yields (80-99 %) and operational stability (200 h). Detailed investigations reveal a tandem oxidation mechanism that base from the electrolyte converts secondary alcohols and their derived ketones to reactive nucleophiles, which are oxidized by electrophilic oxygen species on MnCoOOH from water. As proof of concept, this approach was applied to upgrade lignin derivatives with C(OH)-C or C(O)-C motifs, achieving convergent transformation of lignin-derived mixtures to benzoate and KA oil to adipate with 91.5 % and 64.2 % yields, respectively.

Lactobacillus spp. reduces ethanol-induced liver oxidative stress and inflammation in a mouse model of alcoholic steatohepatitis

Alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH) is a complex multifactorial disease that can lead to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis if not treated promptly. Alcohol-induced oxidative stress and inflammation are the main factors that cause steatohepatitis and liver injury; however, probiotic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract have been revealed to regulate immune responses and reduce oxidative stress, suggesting that functional probiotics could help to prevent ASH and liver injury. Despite numerous reports on the interactions between ASH and probiotics, the mechanisms underlying probiotic-mediated liver protection remain unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to screen probiotics with high antioxidant capacity and investigate the ability of different probiotic combinations to reduce alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in a mouse model. It was identified that Lactobacillus plantarum (TSP05), Lactobacillus fermentum (TSF331) and Lactobacillus reuteri (TSR332) neutralized free radicals and displayed high antioxidant activity in vitro. In addition, these three functional probiotic strains protected mice from alcohol-induced liver injury in vivo. Mice treated with the probiotics demonstrated significantly lower alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and triglyceride levels, which were associated with the downregulation of the proinflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha and IL-6. Furthermore, probiotic treatment upregulated glutathione and glutathione peroxidase activity, which are bioindicators of oxidative stress in the liver. Collectively, the present results indicated that Lactobacillus strains TSP05, TSF331 and TSR332 reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, thus preventing ASH development and liver injury.

The equilibrium solubility and thermodynamic properties of benflumetol in methanol, ethanol, npropanol, n-butanol, n-pentanol, n-hexanol, n-heptanol, n-octanol, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, n-propyl acetate, n-butyl acetate and n-pentyl acetate were reported. Solubility determinations were performed through the laser monitoring method at T = (278.15-323.15) K and p = 101.3 kPa. It is found that the mole fraction solubility of benflumetol increases apparently with the augmented experimental temperature. In addition, the solubility of benflumetol in all ester solvents is greater than that in alcohol solvents. The maximum mole fraction solubility of benflumetol is obtained in n-pentyl acetate (4.061 x 10(-2), T = 323.15 K), and the minimum mole fraction solubility of benflumetol is obtained in methanol (1.341 x 10(-5), T = 278.15 K). The Hansen solubility parameter for benflumetol as well as selected solvents was summarized to analyse the probabilities of miscibility between solute and solvents. The analysis consequence shows that the miscibility of benflumetol with selected solvents is caused by a combination of factors. All recorded solubility of benflumetol were regressed by 9.11 model, modified Apleblat model, two-Suffix Margules model, NRTL model and UNIQUAC model. By comparison, it can be found that the average ARD and 10 4 RMSD of the modified Apelblat model and NRTL model are smaller than the other three models, indicating that these two moedls are more suitable for correlating the solubility data. In addition, the apparent thermodynamic properties of benflumetol in all neat solvents were calculated and investigated by the Van’t Hoff equation. Cannabis use disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder: The prevalence of comorbidity in veterans of recent conflicts

Aims: Veterans have high rates of cannabis use, and rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) are rising among this population. These rising rates are particularly true for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is common among veterans of recent conflicts, Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). Although prior work has documented links between PTSD and cannabis use, a better understanding of the intersection among CUD, PTSD, and other disorders in real-world clinical practice can inform prevention and treatment efforts. This study examined the prevalence and comorbidities of CUD and PTSD in OFE/OIF/OND veterans. Method: The study analyzed data from the Veterans Affairs Corporate Data Warehouse (2010-2016) for returning war veterans who were diagnosed with CUD (N = 46,268). The study determined prevalence of PTSD, and examined additional differences in comorbidities. Results: The prevalence of a comorbid PTSD diagnosis among OEF/OIF/OND veterans with a CUD diagnosis was 72.3%. Further analysis revealed additional co-occurring disorders. Veterans with a diagnosis of CUD and PTSD were more likely to have a comorbid diagnosis of depression (odds ratio, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.62-1.71), panic disorder (odds ratio; 1.58; 95% CI, 1.43-1.75), alcohol use disorder (odds ratio; 1.30; 95% CI, 1.24-1.35), opioid use disorder (odds ratio; 1.52; 95% CI, 1.43-1.62), and insomnia (odds ratio; 1.74; 95% CI, 1.65-1.84) than veterans without a PTSD diagnosis. Conclusions: Findings highlight that the majority of returning war veterans with CUD are highly complex. Our findings substantiate the need for urgent, comprehensive care for veterans with co-occurring CUD and PTSD, including integrated and transdiagnostic treatment approaches.
