Capability of core-sheath polyvinyl alcohol-polycaprolactone emulsion electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds in releasing strontium ranelate for bone regeneration

Core-sheath nanofibrous scaffolds from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-strontium ranelate (SrR)-Polycaprolactone (PCL) were prepared by water in oil electrospinning method. Thus, PCL (the oil phase) was used as the shell part and a mixture of PVA and SrR (the water phase) was inserted in the core. The amounts of SrR was varied from 0 to 15 wt.% Mussel-inspired dopamine-gelatin coating was done on the nanofibrous to improve their hydrophilicity and cellular attachment. The effect of the SrR content on morphology, mechanical, physicochemical, in vitro release behaviors, and biological properties as well as in vivo bone regeneration was investigated. Morphological observations revealed that continuous nanofibers with a core/shell structure were successfully obtained and the fibers diameter increased as the SrR content rose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that SrR was molecularly distributed in the nanofibers and increasing the amount of the SrR decreased the crystallinity of the nanofibers. Moreover, the SrR release was regulated through the mechanism of Fickian diffusion and it was assumed as fast as possible in the samples with higher SrR content. The mesenchymal stem cell culturing showed improved cell proliferation by adding SrR and accelerating the expression of ALP, Runx2, Col I, and OCN genes. Besides, the SrR-loaded nanofibers improved bone formation of calvarial defects in a rat model as revealed by in vivo investigations.

Proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry investigations of phthalate esters via direct headspace sampling

One of the most common environmentally relevant groups of pollutants are phthalate esters. After decades of industrial use, they have become ubiquitous in the environment and analytical methods to chemically detect them in trace amounts are required. In this study, details of Proton Transfer Reaction-Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) investigations for the reactions of phthalic acid and ten phthalate esters with H3O+ as a function of the reduced electric field are presented. A characteristic product ion observed for several of the phthalate esters is protonated phthalic anhydride (m/z 149.02, C8H5O3+). However, not all of the phthalates investigated in this study fragment to produce this product ion following proton transfer. For alkyl diester phthalates, loss of the corresponding alcohol results in the main product ion, but its abundance decreases with increasing alkyl chain length, whilst in comparison for the dialkyl ester phthalates, the protonated phthalic anhydride ion abundance increases with increasing alkyl chain length and with increasing reduced electric field. Collisional induced dissociation in the drift tube of the PTR-MS is shown to be useful as means to manipulate the underlying ion chemistry, leading to unique product ions distinctive to phthalates. The results reported in this work represent a wealth of new data that will be of use for developing a PTR-MS analytical method for the quick, selective and reliable identification of phthalates in the environment. This study evaluated the effect of edible coatings of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and beeswax in concentrations of 10, 20, and 40% in ‘Palmer’ mangoes stored for 15 days at 21 degrees C. The coatings controlled ripening, maintaining peel and pulp colors, firmness, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, sugars, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, beta-carotene, and antioxidant activity. Also, they reduced weight loss, oxidative stress, and the anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) incidence, without inducing alcohol dehydrogenase activity, which suggests that coated fruit did not ferment. Treatment with 20% beeswax was the most suitable for industrial applications, increasing in six days the mangoes shelf life.

Selective electrooxidation of 2-propanol on Pt nanoparticles supported on Co3O4: an in-situ study on atomically defined model systems

2-Propanol and its dehydrogenated counterpart acetone can be used as a rechargeable electrofuel. The concept involves selective oxidation of 2-propanol to acetone in a fuel cell coupled with reverse catalytic hydrogenation of acetone to 2-propanol in a closed cycle. We studied electrocatalytic oxidation of 2-propanol on complex model Pt/Co3O4(111) electrocatalysts prepared in ultra-high vacuum and characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. The electrocatalytic behavior of the model electrocatalysts has been investigated in alkaline media (pH 10, phosphate buffer) by means of electrochemical infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy and ex-situ emersion synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of Pt particle size and compared with the electrocatalytic behavior of Pt(111) and pristine Co3O4(111) electrodes under similar conditions. We found that the Co3O4(111) film is inactive towards electrochemical oxidation of 2-propanol under the electrochemical conditions (0.3-1.1 V-RHE). The electrochemical oxidation of 2-propanol readily occurs on Pt(111) yielding acetone at an onset potential of 0.4 V-RHE. The reaction pathway does not involve CO but yields strongly adsorbed acetone species leading to a partial poisoning of the surface sites. On model Pt/Co3O4(111) electrocatalysts, we observed distinct metal support interactions and particle size effects associated with the charge transfer at the metal/oxide interface. We found that ultra-small Pt particles (around 1 nm and below) consist of partially oxidized Pt-delta(+) species which show minor activity towards 2-propanol oxidation. In contrast, conventional Pt particles (particle size of a few nm) are mainly metallic and show high activity toward 2-propanol oxidation.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline by anatase/rutile titanium dioxide with heterophase junction derived from materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti): Degradation pathway and mechanism studies

Anatase/rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) with heterophase junction and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (50.1 m(2) g(1)) is successfully synthesized by calcinating Materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti) (MIL-125(Ti)) with 30% O-2/Ar at the temperature of 600 degrees C (M-O-600). Several techniques are used to examine the physicochemical, photoelectrochemical and optical properties of samples, and their photocatalytic performances are evaluated by photodegradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline (TC) under visible light illumination. It is found that the calcination temperature has significant influence on the crystal structure and physicochemical parameters of TiO2. The weight fractions of rutile and anatase TiO2 of M-600 are approximately 0.7 and 0.3, which displays outstanding photocatalytic activity. Through the construction of heterophase junction, M-O-600 has better oxygen adsorption and higher density of localized states, which effectively promotes the generation of superoxide radical (center dot O-2(-)) and hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) species. In-situ infrared spectra indicate that toluene is oxidized to benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid in turn and then oxidized to formic acid and acetic acid before eventually degraded into H2O and CO2. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is also used to further investigate the degradation pathway of toluene. Degradation pathway and mechanism of TC are studied by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Moreover, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D EEMs) and total organic carbon (TOC) show that TC can be effectively mineralized through a series of reactions by M-O-600 during photocatalysis. Fun/intoxication pre-drinking motives lead indirectly to more alcohol-related consequences via increased alcohol consumption on a given night

Introduction: Pre-drinking increases alcohol use on drinking nights, which is associated with various adverse alcohol-related consequences but what motivates people to do so, i.e. the role of pre-drinking motives (PDM) in this link, is unclear. The current study examined a) the association of three PDM factors (fun/intoxication, facilitation, and conviviality) with average night-level alcohol use, b) whether PDM are associated with adverse alcohol-related consequences (hangover, drunk driving, blackout, risky sex, injury, and fights) and c) whether PDM mediates the link between night-level alcohol use and negative consequences. Methods: A sample of 204 young adult nightlife goers (48.8% males, M age = 19 SD = 2.4) from Switzerland reported PDM at baseline, and subsequently participated in a 2-month event-level study. Regressions models assessed direct and mediated associations. Results: Fun/intoxication PDM predicted alcohol use in subsequent drinking nights (11.3 nights per participant on average), but not the two other PDM. No direct link between PDM and consequences was found. However, fun/intoxication PDM lead indirectly to more adverse consequences through higher alcohol use. Conclusion: This study shows that predominantly ‘fun/intoxication’ predrinkers are at increased risk for alcohol consumption and consequences, but not those who predrink for conviviality or facilitation motives. The outcomes thus suggest the importance of specific PDM in preventing alcohol use for instance by tailoring interventions based on individuals’ PDM in order to curb drinking and its associated consequences among young adults on weekend nights out.

Effect of absorbed dose on starch:PVA films irradiated with gamma rays

The films characterized by starch:PVA weight ratio equal to 45:55 were obtained by solution casting and irradiated with Co-60 gamma rays in vacuum applying doses of 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75 kGy. The results have shown that irradiation with a dose of 5 kGy induces decrease in surface hydrophilicity shown by increase in contact angle to water with no special impact of using the higher doses. Tensile strength was not affected by irradiation performed with doses in all the range of 5-75 kGy, however using doses of 20 kGy or higher might result in decrease in the films’ flexibility. Decrease in capacity to swell in water accompanied by increase in solubility of the material was also observed after irradiation. A reduced gel content together with an increased solubility of the irradiated material have shown that degradation prevails over crosslinking under gamma irradiation. It can be concluded that radiation modification carried out with gamma rays using doses up to 10 kGy may find application in manufacturing better films in the starch:PVA system, and that using doses of 5 kGy is sufficiently effective for this purpose. Simultaneously, the starch:PVA (45:55) films turn out to be suitable for packing of food intended for radiation decontamination using doses up to 10 kGy.

Use of Hanseniaspora guilliermondii and Hanseniaspora opuntiae to enhance the aromatic profile of beer in mixed-culture fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Beer production is predominantly carried out by Saccharomyces species, such as S. cerevisiae and S. pastorianus. However, the introduction of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in the brewing process is now seen as a promising strategy to improve and differentiate the organoleptic profile of beer. In this study, 17 non-Saccharomyces strains of 12 distinct species were isolated and submitted to a preliminary sensory evaluation to determine their potential for beer bioflavouring. Hanseniaspora guilliermondii IST315 and H. opuntiae IST408 aroma profiles presented the highest acceptability and were described as having ‘fruity’ and ‘toffee’ notes, respectively. Their presence in mixed-culture fermentations with S. cerevisiae US-05 did not influence attenuation and ethanol concentration of beer but had a significant impact in its volatile composition. Notably, while both strains reduced the total amount of ethyl esters, H. guilliermondii IST315 greatly increased the concentration of acetate esters, especially when sequentially inoculated, leading to an 8.2-fold increase in phenylethyl acetate (‘rose’, ‘honey’ aroma) in the final beverage. These findings highlight the importance of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in shaping the aroma profile of beer and suggest a role for Hanseniaspora spp. in improving it.

Au coated ZnO/MWCNTs nanocomposites film-induced four-wave-mixing effect for multi-wavelength generation in erbium-doped fiber laser

High optical nonlinearity of nanostructured materials has been attested as a reliable technique for the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a simple and efficient method for generating continuous-wave (CW) multi-wavelength erbium-doped laser (EDFL) using a nonlinear effect of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly nonlinear nanocomposite film. A nanocomposite film containing gold nanostars coated zinc-oxide nanorods/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs) embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer was prepared, characterized, and then incorporated into the laser cavity to induce the FWM effect. Benefiting from the FWM processes, the induced intensity-dependent gain alleviates the intense gain-competition in the EDFL and increases the number of lasing wavelengths. A five-lasing line with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 36.3 dBm has been observed by appropriately adjusting the pump strength to 300 mW. Repeated measurements verified the high stability of the laser operating at room temperature with less than 3 dBm fluctuations on output power and 0.21 nm lasing wavelength drifts for all wavelengths cases. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first demonstration of multi-wavelength fiber laser utilizing ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs nanocomposite. The results reveal the excellent nonlinear optical properties of the prepared nanocomposite and lay a foundation for its application in the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser.
