Conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene over Ag-ZrO2/SiO2 catalysts: The role of surface interfaces

A series of Ag-ZrO2/SiO2 catalysts with different metal-support interfaces were synthesized in an effort to elucidate the roles of specific interfaces in controlling the ethanol to 1,3-butadiene conversion and selectivity. According to the results of detailed characterizations (e.g. CO/pyridine-DRIFTS, XPS, TEM, NH3-TPD, and H-1 MAS NMR), it was found that the Ag-O-Si interfaces significantly enhanced the dehydrogenation of ethanol while the presence of ZrO2 improved the interaction between Ag and ZrO2 /SiO2, creating more Ae active sites. The high dispersion of ZrO2 on SiO2 generated abundant Zr-O-Si interfaces with medium and weak Lewis acidity, promoting the condensation of acetaldehyde to crotonaldehyde. These Zr-O-Si interfaces in close interaction with Ae species played a critical role in the enhanced H transfer during the MPV reduction of crotonaldehyde to crotyl alcohol. The synergies among the interfaces resulted in retarded ethanol dehydration reactivity, balanced ethanol dehydrogenation and condensation reactions, and a subsequent high 1,3-butadiene yield. Stability of Posttreatment Reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Risk Levels and Posttreatment Functioning in Older Adults with DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder: Secondary Data Analysis of the Elderly Study

Background Studies have found that reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) drinking risk levels may be a stable outcome of treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and associated with functional improvements. The aim of this study was to investigate whether posttreatment reductions in WHO drinking risk levels are stable over time among older adults and associated with a decrease in consequences of drinking and AUD symptoms and improved quality of life. Methods Participants. Individuals 60+ years old, suffering from DSM-5 AUD (n = 693), and seeking outpatient treatment. Measurements. WHO drinking risk levels, prior to treatment and at all follow-up points up to 1 year after treatment start, were assessed with Form 90. Outcomes at follow-up included consequences of drinking (Drinker Inventory of Consequences), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), and DSM-5 AUD symptoms (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). Logistic regression and linear mixed models were used to examine the probability of maintaining risk-level reductions at follow-up and the association between risk-level reductions and outcomes, respectively. Results Reductions in risk levels were maintained over time (at least 1 level: OR 5.39, 95% CI 3.43, 8.47; at least 2 levels: OR 9.30, 95% CI 6.14, 14.07). Reductions were associated with reduced consequences of drinking and number of AUD symptoms, and minor, but statistically significant, improvements in quality of life. Conclusions Maintaining reductions in WHO risk levels appears achievable for older adults seeking treatment for AUD. The small reduction of AUD symptoms and improvement of quality of life indicates that these reductions may not be adequate as the only treatment goal.

Immunomodulatory and Antimicrobial potential of ethanolic extract of Himalayan Myrica esculanta in Oncorhynchus mykiss: Molecular modelling with Aeromonas hydrophila functional proteins

The present study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activity of Myrica esculenta ethanolic leaf extract (MeALE) in rainbow trout. The juvenile fish were immersed in 20 mg/l (T1) and 40 mg/l (T2) MeALE for 2 and 6 h and then challenged with pathogenic bacteria, A. hydrophila (ATCC 7966, USA) after 6 h post immersion in MeALE. The immuno-haematological parameters and relative percentage survival were recorded over 7 days post-exposure. The amino acid interaction of functional proteins of bacteria with myricetin, the active ingredient of M. esculenta was performed by AutoDock Vina software. FTIR detected the characteristic peak values and revealed the presence of various functional groups, viz. alkenes, amines, alcohols, phenols and aromatic compounds. The MIC of MeALE was found to be 2 mg/ml while MBC was recorded to be 25 mg/ml. Molecular docking revealed a strong affinity between myricetin and functional proteins of the pathogen. The fish immersed in 40 mg/l MeALE showed a significant increase in haematological indices and non-specific immunological parameters. The current study reports the successful use of MeALE as an antimicrobial and immunostimulatory agent in rainbow trout and recommends the dosage of 40 mg/l MeALE for preventing Aeromonas infection.

Independent association of marijuana use and poor oral hygiene with HPV-negative but not HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinomas

Background Sexual behavior is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive head and neck cancer, whereas tobacco and alcohol use are associated with HPV-negative cancer. A case-control study was designed to investigate additional demographic and behavioral factors independently associated with these distinct oral cancers. Methods From 2011 to 2014, 249 newly diagnosed oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cases were matched (1:2) on age, gender, and self-identified race to 498 controls without a cancer history attending the outpatient otolaryngology clinic at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Cases were stratified by detection of high-risk HPV DNA and RNA in tumors. Demographic and behavioral data were collected using an audio computer-assisted self-interview, and associations with HPV-positive versus HPV-negative OSCCs were investigated by use of univariable and multivariable conditional logistic regression models. Results After adjustment for oral sexual behavior, the odds of HPV-positive cancer decreased with the patient’s years of education. Annual income, tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, marijuana smoking, and poor oral hygiene were not associated with HPV-positive OSCC. In contrast, the odds of HPV-negative OSCC increased independently with decreased annual income, decreased with a high number of marijuana hit-years, and increased with fewer than annual dental visits after adjustment for lifetime tobacco and alcohol use. Sexual behavior and education were not associated with HPV-negative OSCC. Conclusions The distinct risk-factor profiles for HPV-positive and HPV-negative OSCC are confirmed and extended in this case-control study, thus supporting 2 principal etiological pathways for OSCC development. Lay Summary Sexually acquired human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is an established cause of tonsil and base of tongue cancers. This study compared and contrasted risk factors for HPV-positive and HPV-negative oral cancers. Low number of years of education and sexual behavior are associated with HPV-positive cancer. In contrast, low annual income, infrequent dental visits, and tobacco and alcohol use are associated with HPV-negative cancers. Long-term marijuana use appears protective for HPV-negative cancer. Public health efforts to address these modifiable risk factors may prevent oral cancer.

Nitrogen metabolism in three non-conventional wine yeast species: A tool to modulate wine aroma profiles

The positive impact of certain non-Saccharomyces yeasts on the aromatic profile of wines has been well documented in literature and their industrial use in association with S. cerevisiae is now recommended. Competition between non-Saccharomyces species and Saccharomyces cerevisiae for various nutrients, especially nitrogen sources, greatly impacts the production of aroma compounds. In this study, we further explored the impact of different nitrogen nutrition strategies on the production of carbon and sulphur volatile compounds of three nonSaccharomyces strains, namely Pichia burtonii, Kluyveromyces marxianus, Zygoascus meyerae sequentially inoculated with S. cerevisiae in Sauvignon blanc and Shiraz grape musts. Nitrogen additions were implemented according the specific requirement of each species. At the end of fermentation, we observed specific metabolic signatures for each strain in response to the nature of the nitrogen source suggesting strain-specific metabolic fluxes present. Overall, these results confirmed and further explored the interconnection between nitrogen sources and aroma metabolism (including that of higher alcohols, fatty acids, esters and volatile sulphur compounds), and their variations according to species and the nature of the nitrogen source. The knowledge generated provides new insights to modulate the aroma profile of wines produced with non-Saccharomyces species.

Rapid removal of nitrate from liquid dairy manure by cationic poly (vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) nanofiber membrane

Elevated levels of nitrate in surface water is a leading concern, which impacts human and animal health, and controlling it requires improved and sustainable methods capable of removing nitrate anions from source waste water to reduce nitrate anions transport to environment. In liquid dairy manure, nitrogen content can vary from 200 to 600 ppm and the transport of manure nitrogen into ambient water through hydrologic processes has a potential to exceed the maximum contaminant level limit (10 ppm) of nitrate nitrogen for regulated public water systems. Dairy manure is considered as a reservoir of nitrate. This research investigates on the determination of optimal designing of nanofiber membrane to remove nitrate anions from liquid dairy manure. A cationic poly (vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) nanofiber membrane (EVOH) NFM was grafted via UV with 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl trimethylammonium chloride (DMAC) monomers. The adsorption efficiency of nitrate by the membrane was determined on liquid manure of dairy lagoons located in Central Valley of California. Initial nitrate concentrations in dairy manure varied from 75 to 100 ppm. Results showed that nitrate in dairy water was removed by 70% in 40 min. Tortuous structure and chemical stability of membrane resulted in nitrate dynamic binding capacity of 40 mg g(-1). Furthermore, it exhibits efficient reusability without significant changes in its performance using 0.5 M sodium hydroxide solution for nitrate desorption. Results showed that change in pH, and multi-anion conditions had limited effects on nitrate removal efficiency, and EVOH NFM can be a viable option to remove nitrate of liquid manure. This could be used for mitigating transport of excess nitrate from manure to environment. Overall, the results suggest that EVOH-g-DMAC NFM is efficient, low-cost (13 USD/m(3)) and recyclable material for sustainable removal of nitrate from dairy manure wastewater without requiring any ionic strength or pH adjustment.

Volatile compounds sorption during the aging of Chinese Liquor (Baijiu) using Pottery Powder

Pottery jar is the preferred storage vessel for aging baijiu, Chinese liquor, and it could sorb liquor micro-compounds. The objective of this work was to identify the sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder, and gained insights regarding the sorption processes and mechanism. The sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder of different sizes was studied using different kinetic models. The results showed that the sorption capacity varied among particle size of pottery powder, which also affected equilibrium time. The sorption process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the external diffusion was the rate-limiting step. Liquor volatiles in pottery powder at equilibrium were characterized, which detected alcohols, esters, acids, and furan by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These findings demonstrated pottery could not only cause subtractive changes that occur to liquor during the aging period, but also as a vector for transferring aromas sorbed when reused.

Training emotion regulation processes in alcohol-abstinent individuals: A pilot study

The study aimed to assess whether abstinent individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD) would benefit from enhanced emotional regulation (ER) strategies using the affect regulation training (ART) program based on weekly sessions comprising psycho-education, muscle and respiratory relaxation, awareness, acceptance and tolerance, compassionate personal support, emotion analysis and modification. Seventy-two participants with AUD benefited from ART and were compared on their ER ability, mindfulness, and their experience of abstinence to 40 participants not receiving the program, before it, at the end, and 6 months after. Improvements in ER were observed, particularly in positive centration, action centration or self-blame and in mindfulness abilities after the program and six months later. In addition, by comparing participants who received the program with a short ( < 18 months) or long ( > 18 months) abstinence duration, the results showed a greater decrease in the use of non-adaptive strategies, a greater increase in adaptive strategies and mindfulness abilities in short-term abstinent individuals. These results demonstrate improvement in ER skills after training in people who were abstinent from alcohol. ART is effective for consolidating abstinence and should be used especially at the beginning of withdrawal to promote the rapid implementation of new ER strategies.

Drinking and alcohol-related problems among at-risk adolescents: The role of protective behavioral strategies

Introduction: Protective Behavioral Strategies (PBS) are an alcohol-specific cognitive-behavioral strategies that may be employed before, during and/or after drinking, in order to reduce alcohol consumption and related consequences, particularly in the at-risk populations. Previous research on PBS was limited to North American college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of PBS use in a sample of Polish adolescents attending Special Educational Centers (SEC). Method: Data were collected from a nationwide sample of 12-19 year-old (Mean = 15.8; SD = 1.22) students attending SEC in Poland (N = 1585; about 33% female). The self-administered anonymous questionnaires were completed on-site in the SEC. PBS were measured by the authors adaptation of the PBSS-20. Alcohol-related problems were assessed by the Polish adaptation of the measures used in the MINI-KID tool. Alcohol use was measured by a single question on drinking frequency. These two latter variables were measured in the past year timeframe. Hierarchical regression models were used to test the main and interaction effects of employing PBS (total and subscales scores) on alcohol-related problems, after adjusting for demographics (gender, family composition and type of SEC) and alcohol use. Results: The majority (about 94%) of study participants reported employment of some PBS. Regression analyses indicated that PBS use was associated with reduced risk of alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. We found that PBS significantly moderated the relationship between alcohol use and alcohol-related problems, for PBS total scale (F-change (1,1555) = 15.96, p < .001) and one of the PBS subscale: Limiting/Stopping Drinking (F-change (1,1555) = 4.80, p < .029). Findings were discussed within the results of PBS literature and resilience theory framework. Conclusion: The use of PBS helps to reduce alcohol-related problems among adolescents attending SEC. Implementation of tailored interventions that teach PBS among vulnerable adolescents may be an effective way to strengthen adolescent self-protection, reduce risky alcohol use and related negative consequences. Sometimes chemists are able to propose two or more mechanisms that are consistent with the available data. If a proposed mechanism predicts the wrong experimental rate law, however, the mechanism must be incorrect.Welcome to check out more blogs about 928-51-8, in my other articles. Autoignition characterization of methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol over a wide range of operating conditions in LTC/HCCI

In this work, the autoignition properties of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, and sec-butanol are studied in HCCI and compared. Experiments were performed, characterizing the sensitivity of these fuels to equivalence ratio, intake temperature, residual fraction, intake pressure, and engine speed. Under all of the low boost pressure operating conditions considered (1.15 bar), the order of reactivity of each fuel from low to high is: isopropanol, sec-butanol, ethanol approximate to n-propanol approximate to isobutanol, methanol, n-butanol. n-butanol was less sensitive to changes in intake temperature than the other six fuels at low boost conditions. The required intake temperature to maintain a constant combustion phasing decreased significantly for n-butanol with intake pressure due to emergent intermediate temperature heat release (ITHR). At an intake pressure of 1.95 bar, secbutanol showed some amount of ITHR which decreased its sensitivity to intake temperature. However, secbutanol still maintained its high autoignition resistance, unlike n-butanol. Isobutanol did not show any ITHR at this intake temperature, though did show a decrease in intake temperature sensitivity. With the exception of n-butanol, the behavior and sensitivity of each alcohol fuel to the wide array of operating conditions considered were similar, with small differences in autoignition resistance. This means that these six fuels could potentially be blended and used interchangeably with little change to their autoignition characteristics.
