Pyrolysis of digestate from anaerobic digestion on tungsten oxide catalyst

This study presents the catalytic pyrolysis of conditioned digestate from anaerobic digestion co-digestion plants, in the presence of WO3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst under nitrogen atmosphere. The experimental program was performed at atmospheric pressure, temperature in the isothermal reaction zone 425 degrees C and feeding flow rate of 0.33 mL/min. The analysis of bio-oil composition suggested the presence of a large number of linear and branched aliphatic hydrocarbon components, alcohols, phenols and alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons with two or three methyl-type substituents. The major components present in the cracking gas are methane and carbon oxide. The simulation data obtained for compression at equilibrium of cracking gas indicates an olefin content of LPG higher than the values imposed in the technical specifications of similar products on the market.

Alcohol substitution during one month of cannabis abstinence among non-treatment seeking youth

Objective: Cannabis and alcohol use are correlated behaviors among youth. It is not known whether discontinuation of cannabis use is associated with changes in alcohol use. This study assessed alcohol use in youth before, during, and after 4 weeks of paid cannabis abstinence. Methods: Healthy, non-treatment seeking, cannabis users (n = 160), aged 14-25 years, 84% of whom used alcohol in the last month, were enrolled for a 4-week study with a 2-4 week follow-up. Participants were randomly assigned to 4 weeks of either biochemically-verified cannabis abstinence achieved through a contingency management framework (CB-Abst) or monitoring with no abstinence requirement (CB-Mon). Participants were assessed at baseline and approximately 4, 6, 10, 17, 24, and 31 days after enrollment. A follow-up visit with no cannabis abstinence requirement for CB-Abst was conducted after 2-4 weeks. Results: Sixty percent of individuals assigned to the CB-Abst condition increased in frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption during the 4-week period of incentivized cannabis abstinence. As a whole, CB-Abst increased by a mean of 0.6 drinking days and 0.2 drinks per day in the initial week of abstinence (p’s < 0.006). There was no evidence for further increases in drinking frequency or quantity during the 30-day abstinence period (p's > 0.53). There was no change in drinking frequency or quantity during the 4-week monitoring or follow-up periods among CB-Mon. Conclusions: On average, 4 weeks of incentivized (i.e., paid) cannabis abstinence among non-treatment seeking youth was associated with increased frequency and amount of alcohol use in week 1 that was sustained over 4 weeks and resolved with resumption of cannabis use. However, there was notable variability in individual-level response, with 60% increasing in alcohol use and 23% actually decreasing in alcohol use during cannabis abstinence. Findings suggest that increased alcohol use during cannabis abstinence among youth merits further study to determine whether this behavior occurs among treatment seeking youth and its clinical significance.

Enzymatic hydrolysis and auto-isomerization during beta-glucosidase treatment improve the aroma of instant white tea infusion

The aroma changes in instant white tea resulting from beta-glucosidase treatment was investigated by quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), odour activity value analysis (OAV), aroma reconstruction and omission tests. The grassy, floral and sweet notes increased significantly (P < 0.05), and the roasted note decreased significantly (P < 0.05) upon beta-glucosidase treatment. Quantitative analysis showed that the concentrations of benzaldehyde, benzeneacetaldehyde, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, linalool, phenylethyl alcohol, cis-linalool oxide, trans-linalool oxide, hexanol, hotrienol and (E)-2-hexen-1-ol increased significantly (P < 0.05) after treatment; however, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol isomerized to (E)-2-hexen-1-ol. OAV analysis, aroma reconstruction and the omission test showed that the grassy, floral and sweet notes increased as the (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, cis/trans-linalool oxide and benzeneacetaldehyde increased, whereas the roasted note declined under the same conditions. The enzymatic hydrolysis of glycosidic precursors and the auto-isomerization of volatile compounds provide new information for understanding how beta-glucosidase treatment improves the aroma of tea products. The proportionality constant is the rate constant for the particular unimolecular reaction. the reaction rate is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactant. Temporal stability of driver injury severity in single-vehicle roadway departure crashes: A random thresholds random parameters hierarchical ordered probit approach

This study examines contributing variables affecting the driver injury-severity in single-vehicle roadway departure crashes. To capture the threshold heterogeneity and unobserved heterogeneity, the random thresholds random parameters hierarchical ordered pro bit (HOPIT) approach is employed using the crash data collected from 2014 to 2017 in the State of North Carolina. Three injury severity levels are considered: severe injury, minor injury, and no injury. Attributes that potentially affect crash severity are examined, including driver, crash, roadway, and environmental characteristics. A series of likelihood ratio tests are conducted to examine the temporal stability of factors across different studied years. The marginal effects of factors in different injury-severity models are compared. Significant temporal instability is found among the studied year periods. The threshold value estimated using the random threshold random parameters HOPIT model is found to be random parameters and determined by specific explanatory variables. Additionally, the effects of some factors (e.g., alcohol, curved roadway, passenger car, SUV, and wet/water surface) on injury severity are relatively stable, while others (e.g., female driver, collector, and clear weather) present temporal unstable effects. Regarding the temporal instability, decision-makers need to treat the factors carefully to avoid developing incorrect countermeasures. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cell wall and metabolite composition of sweet cherry fruits from two cultivars with contrasting susceptibility to surface pitting during storage

Surface pitting is a serious postharvest physiological disorder in sweet cherries that is observed as skin depressions developed days after bruising. This work aims to compare two cultivars displaying different pitting susceptibilities (‘Kordia’: relatively resistant; ‘Sweetheart’: relatively susceptible) using metabolomics profiling and cell wall sugar characterization at different developmental stages and during postharvest storage. Kordia was significantly firmer than Sweetheart, with 1.4-fold more alcohol-insoluble residues (AIRs). A significant correlation was observed between AIRs and deformation, indicating that the highest yields of cell wall material are positively correlated with the resistance to rupture. Additionally, free D-galacturonic acid was higher in pitted Sweetheart samples, likely indicating greater pectin degradation in this susceptible cultivar. Higher contents of the p-coumaric acid derivatives L-5-oxoproline and D-galactose in Sweetheart cherries were found. The metabolic changes during storage and cell wall composition could influence the susceptibility to surface pitting.

Chronic ethanol exposure differentially alters neuronal function in the medial prefrontal cortex and dentate gyrus

Alterations in the function of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus have been implicated in underlying the relapse to alcohol seeking behaviors in humans and animal models of moderate to severe alcohol use disorders (AUD). Here we used chronic intermittent ethanol vapor exposure (CIE), 21d protracted abstinence following CIE (21d AB), and re-exposure to one vapor session during protracted abstinence (re-exposure) to evaluate the effects of chronic ethanol exposure on basal synaptic function, neuronal excitability and expression of key synaptic proteins that play a role in neuronal excitability in the medial PFC (mPFC) and dentate gyms (DG). CIE consistently enhanced excitability of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons in the mPFC and granule cell neurons in the DG. In the DG, this effect persisted during 21d AB. Re-exposure did not enhance excitability, suggesting resistance to vapor-induced effects. Analysis of action potential kinetics revealed that altered afterhyperpolarization, rise time and decay time constants are associated with the altered excitability during CIE, 21d AB and reexposure. Molecular adaptations that may underlie increases in neuronal excitability under these different conditions were identified. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction of large-conductance potassium (BK) channel subunit mRNA in PFC and DG tissue homogenates did not show altered expression patterns of BK subunits. Western blotting demonstrates enhanced phosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), and reduced phosphorylation of glutamate receptor GluN2A/2B subunits. These results suggest a novel relationship between activity of CaMKII and GluN receptors in the mPFC and DG, and neuronal excitability in these brain regions in the context of moderate to severe AUD.

Soot properties in ethylene inverse diffusion flames blended with different carbon chain length alcohols

This study was devoted to the characterization of soot properties in ethylene inverse diffusion flames with different carbon length alcohols, which mainly contained the soot morphology, soot nanostructure, and oxidation reactivity. Ethanol, n-butanol, n-hexanol, and n-octanol were selected as the fuel additives. For all blended flames, a 30% volume fraction of ethylene was substituted by different alcohol additives, and the flow rates of the alcohols were adjusted to achieve the same number of carbon atoms. A combination of the thermophoretic sampling technique and the quartz plate sampling method was applied to gain soot features. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used. The results showed that soot production was reduced with the addition of all alcohols, and the minimum soot yield was observed with ethanol addition. The soot-reducing ability gradually decreased as the alcohols move higher. The sizes of the primary particles and soot aggregates increased slightly faster with the increasing carbon chain length. Furthermore, the soot generated from higher alcohol-doped flame has a higher degree of graphitization with longer fringe length and smaller fringe tortuosity. The four different alcohol additives all could improve soot oxidation reactivity. There was a correlation between soot oxidation reactivity and the carbon chain length of the alcohols that the longer carbon chain of these alcohol additives led to lower soot reactivity.

Perceived reward from using cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis and concurrent use: A smartphone-based daily diary study

Introduction: Smoking cigarettes under the influence of alcohol or cannabis is associated with perceived pleasure. However, it is unclear whether these changes in perceived reward impact the extent of concurrent use of cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis. The current study investigated if self-reported changes in perceived reward from concurrent use of cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis are related to the extent of concurrent use in real-world contexts using a smartphone-based Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) study. Methods: The sample included 126 diverse young adult smokers in the San Francisco Bay Area who reported current alcohol or cannabis use at baseline (M = 22.8 years, 50.8% male, 40.5% sexual minority, 39.7% Non-Hispanic White). Participants completed an online baseline survey and 30 days of smartphone-based daily EMA surveys of cigarette, alcohol, and cannabis use. The baseline assessed self-reported changes in perceived pleasure of smoking cigarettes while using alcohol or cannabis separately. EMA surveys included detailed questions about concurrent use (i.e., the extent of smoking while using another substance) covering the previous day. A total of 2,600 daily assessments were analyzed using mixed models. Results: Higher perceived pleasure from smoking cigarettes while drinking alcohol or using cannabis at baseline were both associated with a greater extent of concurrent use of cigarettes with alcohol (b = 0.140; SE = 0.066; t = 2.1; p = .035) and cannabis (b = 0.136; SE = 0.058; t = 2.4; p = .019) on a given day. Conclusions: Results suggest that perceived reward from concurrently using cigarettes with alcohol or cannabis is associated with the extent of concurrent use. Findings can inform tailored smoking cessation interventions.

The structural and functional characterization of Malus domestica double bond reductase MdDBR provides insights towards the identification of its substrates

In this study we describe the crystal structures of the apoform, the binary and the ternary complexes of a double bond reductase from Malus domestica L. (MdDBR) and explore a range of potential substrates. The overall fold of MdDBR is similar to that of the medium chain reductase/dehydrogenase/zinc-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase-like family. Structural comparison of MdDBR with Arabidopsis thaliana DBR (AtDBR), Nicotiana tabacum DBR (NtDBR) and Rubus idaeus DBR (RiDBR) allowed the identification of key amino acids involved in cofactor and ligands binding and shed light on how these residues may guide the orientation of the substrates. The enzyme kinetic for the substrate trans-4-phenylbuten-2-one has been analyzed, and MdDBR activity towards a variety of substrates was tested. This enzyme has been reported to be involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway where it would catalyze the NADPH-dependent reduction of the alpha, beta-unsaturated double bond of carbonyl metabolites. Our study provides new data towards the identification of MdDBR natural substrate and the biosynthetic pathway where it belongs. Furthermore, the originally proposed involvement in dihydrochalcone biosynthesis in apple must be questioned. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate Related Hypoglycemia In A Non-Diabetic COVID-19 Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review

Objective: Hypoglycemia is a serious adverse effect of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) which is very rare in non-diabetic patients. This case report describes a non-diabetic patient without any other chronic diseases, who experienced mild hypoglycemia related to HCQ used for COVID-19 treatment. Methods: All etiologies causing hypoglycemia were investigated and a 72-hour fast test was performed. Results: A 34-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with a high fever, cough, and chest pain. The result of his COVID-19 PCR test was positive. He received HCQ for 10 days for the treatment of COVID-19 infection. He experienced fatigue, dizziness, severe headache, weakness and feeling of hunger after discontinuation of HCQ during his isolation at home. Before COVID-19 infection, he never experienced hypoglycemia symptoms. He did not have a history of chronic diseases, drug use, alcohol consumption, or smoking. A 72-hour fasting test was performed. He complained about headache and weakness during the 72-hour test period. The PG level was determined as 49 mg/dl during these symptoms. Concurrent insulin and C-peptide levels were <2 mU/mL and 0.553 ng/mL, respectively. ACTH, cortisol, growth hormones, liver and kidney function tests were normal. HbA1c level was 4.7% (28 mmol/mol) (Normal Range %4,5-5,7). Conclusion: Hypoglycemia may be observed as an adverse effect of HCQ used for COVID-19 infection even in patients without chronic diseases and comorbidities. We must be careful while using HCQ for these patients and must warn them about this effect. The warning about hypoglycemia effect of HCQ must be added to COVID-19 treatment guidelines.
