High performance carbon nanotube/polymer composite fibers and water-driven actuators

Advanced fiber materials made from nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have stimulated extensive interest recently; polymer infiltration represents a simple and effective approach to tailor the fiber structure and improve related properties, which deserves more thorough study. Here, we adopted an acid-assisted in situ and scalable polymer infiltration method to prepare continuous CNT/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite fibers, with combined high mechanical strength (up to 2 GPa, and 1.5 GPa at a gauge length of 5 cm) and electrical conductivity (3.16 x 10(5) S/m), superior than most of previous reports. Based on these, we further fabricated uniformly twisted helical CNT/PVA fibers retaining reasonable strengths (similar to 900 MPa) yet significantly enlarging the tensile strains to as high as 95%. Using the hydrophilicity of infiltrated PVA and the designed helical fiber structure, we created water-driven actuators with axial shrinkage reaching 47% of original fiber length. Our high performance CNT/PVA fibers have potential applications in areas such as multifunctional fiber-based electronics, artificial muscles, smart textiles and soft robotics.

In animal studies, it has been shown that neuroinflammation increases during alcohol withdrawal. Literature on opioids and stimulants is less numerous. Chronic morphine intake induces dysbiosis, increased intestinal permeability and a probable neuroinflammation, which could explain symptoms such as tolerance, hyperalgesia and deficit in reward behavior. Taken together, the findings of our narrative literature review suggest a bidirectional influence in the pathogenesis of substance use disorders.

Methane Bi-reforming for direct ethanol production over smart Cu/Mn- ferrite catalysts

The main goal of this research is direct synthesis of ethanol from methane bi-reforming reaction (H2O/CO2 methane reforming, SCMR) in a single step catalytic process. Smart nano-structured spinel ferrite catalysts with small ratio of Cu or Mn in composite with Fe cluster were prepared using ultrasonic assistance technique. Characterization data indicate the stability of the prepared ferrite structure during calcination step, so it can use for high temperature reaction. From XPS and Raman spectra, cupper ferrite shows deviation from ideal spinel structure, which increases the migration of bulk oxygen into surface to share in catalytic activity. The catalytic activity test was performed at moderate reaction condition (700 degrees C) using CO2 as soft oxidant to avoid methane combustion reaction and steam to release the alcoholic products. The two catalysts show unusual high catalytic activity and stability due to strong synergetic effect between metal and Fe. Cu-Fe gives high selectivity (similar to 50%) toward liquid product (ethanol), while Mn-Fe is more selective (similar to 70%) toward gas product (syngas). Furthermore, the chemical looping step is used to obtain ultra-stable SCMR reaction. Analysis of volatile compound changes in fried shallot (Allium cepa L. var. aggregatum) oil at different frying temperatures by GC-MS, OAV, and multivariate analysis

Flavor is a key attribute of fried oil that shows a critical correlation with temperature. Therefore, selecting the appropriate temperature is important in preparing fried shallot oil (FSO). Volatile compounds from five different FSOs were identified and comparatively studied using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled with multivariate data analysis, including principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). GC-MS results identified a total of 93 volatiles, among which aldehydes, alcohols, pyrazines, and sulfur-containing compounds were the major compounds. Eighteen compounds had odor active values (OAV) >1. Among the compounds, hexanal, (E)-2-heptenal, (E)-2-octenal, dipropyl disulfide, 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazine, and 1-octen-3-ol were important to the overall aroma profile of FSOs. In the PCA model, all the detected FSOs were divided into three clusters, which were assigned as cluster A (FSO5), B (FSO4), and C (the rest FSOs). Multivariate data analyses revealed that nonanal, 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, (E)-2-heptenal, and hexanal contributed positively to the classification of different FSOs. GC-MS coupled with multivariate data analysis could be used as a convenient and efficient analytical method to classify raw materials.

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of a nanofiber wound dressing loaded with melatonin

Wound healing is a complicated process that takes a long time to complete. The three-layer nanofiber wound dressing containing melatonin is highly expected to show remarkable wound repair by reducing the wound healing time. In this study, chitosan (Cs)-polycaprolactone (PCL)/ polyvinylalcohol (PVA)-melatonin (MEL)/ chitosan-polycapmlactone three-layer nanofiber wound dressing was prepared by electrospinning for melatonin sustained release. The characteristics of the wound dressing were further evaluated. The wound dressing had a high water uptake after 24 h (401%), and the water contact angle results showed that it had hydrophilicity effect that supported the cell attachment. The wound healing effect of wound dressing was examined using a full-thickness excisional model of rat skin by the local administration of MEL. The gene expressions of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta 1), alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA), collagen type I (COL1A1), and collagen type III (COL3A1) were further studied. The histopathological evaluation showed the complete regeneration of the epithelial layer, remodeling of wounds, collagen synthesis, and reduction in inflammatory cells. The NF + 20% MEL significantly increased TGF-beta 1, COL1A1, COL3A1, and alpha-SMA mRNA expressions. This wound dressing may have a considerable potential as a wound dressing to accelerate the wound healing.

A multidisciplinary approach to the management of liver disease and alcohol disorders in psychiatric settings (Review)

Society is burdened with the uncontrolled use of alcohol, an ongoing issue, with a substantial associated morbidity and a pressing economical reverberation. It is inevitable that a series of psychiatric patients who display alcohol disorders will be admitted to hospital while also suffering from health conditions, such as liver disease, due to the consumption of alcohol. Managing comorbid patients in a psychiatric facility is a delicate matter that requires a collaborative team. The aim of this systematic paper is to highlight the following: The possibility of treating alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) overlapping alcohol liver disease (ALD) within a psychiatric institution, and the importance of a collaborative multidisciplinary team; correctly dosing psychoactive medication when metabolism is affected by ALD; deciding when is it necessary to seek a transfer to a general hospital. Prescribing medication in patients suffering from ALD is still a not a fully documented territory. Protein binding, metabolism, bioavailability, extraction ratios, excretion route, and half-life must be taken into consideration as well as frequently repeating liver panels. Studies suggest that short-acting benzodiazepines are preferred over their alternatives when treating AWS in ALD. All anticonvulsants can be used in patients with decompensated liver disease with caution, although newer generation antiepileptic agents should be first line. Propofol is favored to benzodiazepines or opioids in the case of decompensated cirrhosis. Patients with ALD are likely to be further compromised by the potential hepatocytotoxicity of some pharmacological agents. On that account, having an integrated perspective of the medical case while taking into consideration the underlying illness as well as possible drug interaction is crucial in treating AUD or AWS in a psychiatric institution.

Association between environmental exposure to cadmium and risk of suspected non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Aim: We evaluated the associations between blood Cadmium (Cd) concentrations and risk of suspected NAFLD using nationally representative data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2008-2013, 2016 and 2017. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 12,099 adults for the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) analyses and 2,904 adults for the serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and fatty liver index (FLI) analyses, without significant alcohol consumption. Blood Cd concentrations were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Data were analyzed using survey logistic regression models. Results: Odds ratios (ORs) of suspected NAFLD increased significantly per unit of natural log-transformed blood Cd concentration (OR [95% (CI)], for ALT, overall: 1.50 [1.34, 1.68], men: 1.64 [1.40, 2.10] and women: 1.29 [1.08, 1.47]; for GGT, overall: 1.77 [1.33, 2.35], men: 2.28 [1.53, 3.41] and women: 1.27 [0.82, 1.97]; for FLI, overall: 1.84 [1.32, 2.57], men: 1.91 [1.24, 2.94] and women: 1.58 [0.87, 2.86]; for HSI, overall: 1.19 [1.07, 1.32], men: 1.17 [1.01, 1.37] and women: 1.14 [0.99, 1.32]). The blood Cd concentrations associated with risk of suspected NAFLD were lower than those previously reported (for ALT, > 0.64 mg/L, for GGT, > 1.41 mg/L, for FLI, > 0.96 mg/L, and for HSI, > 1.41 mg/L). Conclusions: This study suggests that the reference level of blood Cd should probably be lower than the previously recommended value to prevent adverse health effects due to Cd exposure. Recent advances in artificial enzyme cascades for the production of value-added chemicals

Enzyme cascades are efficient tools to perform multi-step synthesis in one-pot in a green and sustainable manner, enabling non-natural synthesis of valuable chemicals from easily available substrates by artificially combining two or more enzymes. Bioproduction of many high-value chemicals such as chiral and highly functionalised molecules have been achieved by developing new enzyme cascades. This review summarizes recent advances on engineering and application of enzyme cascades to produce high-value chemicals (alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, amines, carboxylic acids, etc) from simple starting materials. While 2-step enzyme cascades are developed for versatile enantioselective synthesis, multi-step enzyme cascades are engineered to functionalise basic chemicals, such as styrenes, cyclic alkanes, and aromatic compounds. New cascade reactions have also been developed for producing valuable chemicals from bio-based substrates, such as L-phenylalanine, and renewable feedstocks such as glucose and glycerol. The challenges in current process and future outlooks in the development of enzyme cascades are also addressed.

Structure and functionality of oat protein extracted by choline chloride-dihydric alcohol deep eutectic solvent and its water binary mixtures

This research reports an eco-friendly oat protein extraction method using choline chloride (ChCl)-butanediol deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and DES/water binary mixtures. Eighteen formulas consisting of ChCl with butanediol isomer (1,2-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, or 2, 3-butanediol) in the absence or presence of water at different molar ratio were examined for the synthesis of DESs and binary mixtures. We found that 6 formulae can be fabricated at a ChCl-butanediol molar ratio of 1:3 independent of water presence, and that they had better oat extraction performance with 90 min extraction at 80 degrees C. Under the optimal conditions, we further assessed the impact of butanediol isomers and water addition on the structure characteristics and functionalities of extracted oat protein. The results suggested that oat protein extracted by ChCl-1,4-butanediol/water binary mixture had highest protein content, solubility, foaming capacity and stability. Our pilot findings provide crucial support to our hypothesis that the isomer of hydrogen bond donor is critically involved in the properties of oat protein the DES and the binary mixtures extracted, which pave the way for the future application of DES in protein extraction.

Gastrodin alleviates seizure severity and neuronal excitotoxicities in the rat lithium-pilocarpine model of temporal lobe epilepsy via enhancing GABAergic transmission

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Temporal lobe epilepsy remains one of the most drug-resistant focal epilepsy, leading to enormous healthcare burden. Among traditional herb medicine, some ingredients have the potential to treat seizure and alleviate the neuronal excitoxicity. The dried rhizome of Gastrodia elata Blume has been used to treat convulsive disorder, dizziness, dementia and migraine in eastern Asia. Aim of the study: To determine whether gastrodin, an active ingredient of Gastrodia elata Blume, can reduce lithium-pilocarpine induced seizure severity and neuronal excitotoxicity and explore the underlying mechanism. Materials and methods: We divided the Sprague-Dawley rats into an experimental group (gastrodin group) and a control group (Dimethyl sulfoxide, vehicle group) and performed the behavioral analysis and electroencephalography to determine the effect of gastrodin on the seizure severity induced by lithium-pilocarpine injection. Nissl-stained histopathology elucidated the degree of rat hippocampal neuronal damage as markers of acute and subacute neuronal excitotoxicity. Besides, the Western blotting of dissected hippocampus was carried out to demonstrate the protein expression involving GABAergic transmission and metabolic pathway. Results: Gastrodin reduced the acute seizure severity in lithium-pilocarpine-induced seizure model. In electroencephalography recording, gastrodin exerted inhibitory action on epileptiform discharge. Compared with control group, gastrodin exhibited neuroprotective effect against seizure related hippocampal neuronal damage at acute and subacute stages. The Western blotting showed that gastrodin reversed the degradation of GABA(A) receptor after pilocarpine-induced seizures. Conclusions: In the experimental seizure model, gastrodin showed anti-seizure and neuroprotective abilities. Enhancing the expression of GABA(A) receptor plays an important role in its antiepileptic mechanism. The results offer a new insight of developing new antiepileptic drugs from traditional Chinese medicine.
