Divergent, Strain-Release Reactions of Azabicyclo[1.1.0]butyl Carbinols: Semipinacol or Spiroepoxy Azetidine Formation

The azetidine moiety is a privileged motif in medicinal chemistry and new methods that access them efficiently are highly sought after. Towards this goal, we have found that azabicyclo[1.1.0]butyl carbinols, readily obtained from the highly strained azabicyclo[1.1.0]butane (ABB), can undergo divergent strain-release reactions upon N-activation. Treatment with trifluoroacetic anhydride or triflic anhydride triggered a semipinacol rearrangement to give keto 1,3,3-substituted azetidines. More than 20 examples were explored, enabling us to evaluate selectivity and the migratory aptitude of different groups. Alternatively, treatment of the same alcohols with benzyl chloroformate in the presence of NaI led to iodohydrin intermediates which gave spiroepoxy azetidines upon treatment with base. The electronic nature of the activating agent dictates which pathway operates.

Effect of multiscale reinforcement by fiber surface treatment with polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide/oxidized carbon nanotubes on the mechanical properties of reinforced hybrid fiber composites

Polyvinyl alcohol-graphene oxide-oxidized carbon nanotube (PVA-GO-OCNT) hybrid coatings were adopted to modify glass fibers (GFs) and carbon fibers (CFs), and modified GF/CF-reinforced polyurethane hybrid composites (PVA-GO-OCNTs-HFs/PUs) with different concentric hybrid structures were prepared. The synergistic effect of the hybrid structure and surface modification of hybrid fibers (HFs) on the mechanical properties of hybrid composites was investigated systematically. The results show that the hybrid structure can optimize the comprehensive mechanical properties of HF-reinforced composites (HFRCs) by combining the performance advantages of the two types of fiber reinforcement, and the strength of the interface between HFs and polyurethane (PU) plays a crucial role in whether the advantages of the hybrid structure can be fully achieved. In addition, the mechanical properties of the composite were significantly enhanced, and the structural advantages of the hybrid structure were further improved after HFs were modified by PVA-GO-OCNT hybrid coating. The hybrid effect on the tensile strength of HFRCs with CF as the core and GF as the shell changes from a negative hybrid effect (5.4%) before modification to a positive hybrid effect (4.3%). The hybrid effect in tensile failure strain of HFRCs with GF as the core and CF as the shell changes from a negative hybrid effect (2.1%) before modification to a positive hybrid effect (2.1%). Moreover, the interlaminar shear strength of HFRCs modified by PVA-GO-OCNT hybrid coating is significantly higher than that of unmodified HFRCs.

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis of Hybrid Population Provides Insights Into Starch Content in Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) Storage Root

Sweet potato is an important starchy crop, which is mainly utilized as food, animal feed, and fermented to produce fuel-grade alcohol. However, the genetic mechanism regulating starch content in sweet potato is not yet fully understood. In this study, transcriptome analysis was performed in sweet potato cultivars Luoxushu 8 (high starch), Zhengshu 20 (low starch), and 12 hybrid F-1 lines (six high-starch lines and six low-starch lines), which detected a total of 85,493 genes. The high and low-starch content groups were compared and found that 47 and 64 genes were up-regulated and down-regulated, respectively. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that seven differentially expressed genes were significantly enriched in the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter pathway. Among them, five genes (annotated as ABCB1) that might involve in the auxin transport were significantly down-regulated in high-starch group. Meanwhile, the storage root sizes of Zhengshu 20 were higher as compared with Luoxushu 8. Simultaneously, four of the five differentially expressed genes enriched in the starch and sucrose metabolism pathway were up-regulated in high-starch group. These results provided the basis for the study of starch content in sweet potato storage root.

Alcohol to down-regulate negative and positive emotions: Extending our understanding of the functional role of alcohol in relation to posttraumatic stress disorder

Introduction: Functional models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) underscore the role of internally-driven negative reinforcement. However, with the focus of these models being on negative emotions broadly, there is limited understanding of the effect of alcohol use to down-regulate specific forms of negative emotions or positive emotions generally. Among populations characterized by PTSD, there is growing evidence that positive emotions may elicit aversive reactions and thus be intentionally reduced, including via alcohol use. Objective: The current study examined the associations among PTSD symptom severity, alcohol use to down-regulate both negative (i.e., despondency and anger) and positive emotions, and alcohol misuse. Method: Data were collected from 320 trauma-exposed, substance-using individuals in the community (M age = 35.78, 46.9% women). Results: Individuals with greater PTSD symptom severity reported significantly higher alcohol use to down-regulate despondency, anger, and positive emotions, which, in turn, were linked to greater alcohol misuse. Conclusions: Alcohol use may serve to down-regulate both negative (i.e., despondency and anger) and positive emotions, and these functions may help to explain the association of PTSD symptom severity to alcohol misuse. PTSD-AUD models may benefit from specifying a negatively reinforcing function of alcohol use in the context of positive emotions.

Characterization of bio-nanocomposite films based on gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol blend reinforced with bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers for food packaging applications

Bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers (BCNW) were synthesized from Komagataeibacter xylinus (strain K2G30; UMCC 2756) using sulfuric acid hydrolysis and incorporated into a gelatin-polyvinyl alcohol (GL/PVA) blend film matrix. The effect of BCNW content (1-10 wt% of biopolymer) on the microstructural, mechanical, optical, and water barrier properties of bio-nanocomposites was studied. Transmission electron microscopy showed that BCNW had a needle shape morphology with an average length of 600 nm and an average width of 30 nm. The crystallinity index of BCNW was 94.7% using X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) illustrated good miscibility between GL/PVA blend film matrix and BCNW up to 7.5 wt%. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode showed molecular interactions between functional groups of the GL/PVA blend film matrix and BCNW. The incorporation of BCNW up to 7.5% into the GL/PVA blend reduced the water vapor transmission rate and water vapor permeability by about 22% and 14%, respectively, while tensile strength, elongation at break, and elastic modulus increased by about 21.5%, 41% and 19%, respectively (p < 0.05). Films transparency was not affected by the addition of BCNW (p > 0.05) suggesting that the BCNW were dispersed uniformly at the nanoscale. All films were colorless (Delta E*<2) with low opacity value (<2) comparable to synthetic plastics. Overall, the characterization of functional properties revealed that GL/PVA blend film reinforced with BCNW could be used as an environmentally friendly packaging material to partially replace or reduce the use of current petroleum-based packaging materials. I hope this article can help some friends in scientific research. I am very proud of our efforts over the past few months and hope to 100442-33-9 help many people in the next few years. Some studies on the mutual diffusion, Joule-Thomson inversion curve and virial coefficients of binary mixtures containing diethylamine and (C-5 – C-9) 1-alkanol

In this study, second and third virial coefficients and the Joule-Thomson inversion curves for the binary mixtures of diethylamine (DEA) with 1-pentanol up to 1-nonanol were calculated regarding the Peng-Robinson-Stryjek-Vera (PRSV) equation. Experimental densities were used to calculate the adjustable parameters of the PRSV equation. The estimation of the thermodynamic factor for the binary systems from the COSMO-RS model shows that the considered mixtures exhibit a negative deviation from Raoult’s Law. Besides, the diffusion coefficients for the binary mixtures in the whole composition range were determined regarding experimental viscosities. The results were analyzed to gain information about the liquid structure in the binary mixtures. It has been shown that intermolecular forces between DEA and 1-alkanol, which changes with the alcohol chain length, have a significant impact on the above-mentioned parameters. The investigation has shown that increasing the alcohol chain length reinforces the strength of intermolecular interactions. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Investigation of the intrinsic reaction kinetics and the mass transfer phenomena of nonanoic acid esterification with 2-ethylhexanol promoted by sulfuric acid or Amberlite IR120

Nonanoic acid is obtained as main coproduct in the synthesis of azelaic acid from oleic acid. The increase of azelaic acid production, being a monomer useful to synthesize biodegradable polyesters, lead to a high availability of nonanoic acid, that can be used as feedstock in esterification reactions to obtain lubricants and solvents. In this work, the esterification of nonanoic acid with 2-ethylhexanol to produce a solvent were conducted in a batch reactor in the presence of either a homogeneous (H2SO4) or an heterogenous catalyst (Amberlite IR120). The intrinsic reaction kinetics was investigated by considering all the physical and chemical phenomena occurring in the reaction network, leading to the determination of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The activation energy values of both catalysts are similar (approximate to 60 kJ/mol) and the enthalpy value of Delta H-r = 10.3 kJ/mol showed that the reaction is slightly endothermic. The reaction is shifted to the products as demonstrated by the reference equilibrium constant equal to 1.69 at 333 K. The obtained results will be useful to design industrial reactors.

Alcohol consumption, harms and policy developments in sub-Saharan Africa: The case for stronger national and regional responses

Issues Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has long been characterised as a region with weak alcohol policies, high proportions of abstainers and heavy episodic drinkers (among drinkers), and as a target for market expansion by global alcohol producers. However, inter-regional analyses of these issues are seldom conducted. Approach Focusing mainly on the period 2000-2016, we compare alcohol consumption and harms, alcohol policy developments and alcohol industry activities over time and across the four sub-regions of SSA. Key Findings Per-capita consumption of alcohol and alcohol-related disease burden have increased in Central Africa but stabilised or reduced in other regions, although they are still high. Most countries have implemented tax policies, but they have seldom adopted other World Health Organization ‘best buys’ for cost-effective alcohol control policies. Countries range from having minimal alcohol controls to having total bans (e.g. some Muslim-majority countries); and some, such as Botswana, have attempted stringent tax policies to address alcohol harm. Alcohol producers have continued their aggressive marketing and policy interference activities, some of which have been highlighted and, in a few instances, resisted by civil society and public health advocates, particularly in southern Africa. Implications Increased government support and commitment are needed to be able to adopt and implement effective alcohol policies and respond to pressures from alcohol companies to which SSA remains a target market. Conclusion SSA needs effective alcohol control measures in order to reverse the trajectory of worsening alcohol harms observed in some countries and reinforce improvements in alcohol harms observed in others.

Effects of roasting level on physicochemical, sensory, and volatile profiles of soybeans using electronic nose and HS-SPME-GC-MS

We applied oven-roasting on soybean in order to investigate their physicochemical, sensory, and volatile profiles using electronic nose and HS-SPME-GC-MS. Results revealed a temperature dependent kinetic on the physicochemical index except fat content. Roasting at 200 degrees C for 20 min decreased the protein dispersibility index about 38%; while, lipoxygenase and peroxidase were entirely inactivated. The primary heat sensitive amino acids were methionine, arginine, and cysteine. Electronic nose showed certain capacity to discriminate varying roasted soybeans. Out of 41 volatile compounds identified in soybean headspace, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine showed the highest abundance of 411.18 mu g/Kg. Regression model suggested the association of hexanal and aliphatic alcohols with beany flavor, while pyrazines, heterocycles, and furanoids showed a positive correlation with roasted flavor. The selected flavor markers can be used to predict the development of flavor in roasted soybeans. Our study emphasized the effect of roasting level on nutritive value and flavor profiles of soybeans.

Rates and predictors of brief intervention for women veterans returning from recent wars: Examining gaps in service delivery for unhealthy alcohol use

Background: Approximately one in four women veterans accessing the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) engage in unhealthy alcohol use. There is substantial evidence for gender-sensitive screening (AUDIT-C = 3) and brief intervention (BI) to reduce risks associated with unhealthy alcohol use in women veterans; however, VA policies and incentives remain gender-neutral (AUDIT-C = 5). Women veterans who screen positive at lower-risk-level alcohol use (AUDIT-C = 3 or 4) may screen out and therefore not receive BI. This study aimed to examine gaps in implementation of BI practice for women veterans through identifying rates of BI at different alcohol risk levels (AUDIT-C = 3-4; =5-7; =8-12), and the role of alcohol risk level and other factors in predicting receipt of BI. Methods: From administrative data (2010-2016), we drew a sample of women veterans returning from recent wars who accessed outpatient and/or inpatient care. Of 869 women veterans, 284 screened positive for unhealthy alcohol use at or above a gender-sensitive cut-point (AUDIT-C >= 3). We used chart review methods to abstract variables from the medical record and then employed logistic regression comparing women veterans who received BI at varying alcohol risk levels to those who did not. Results: While almost 60% of the alcohol positive-risk sample received BI, among the subset of women veterans who screened positive for lower-risk alcohol use (57%; AUDIT-C = 3 or 4) only 34% received BI. Nurses in primary care programs were less likely to deliver BI than other types of clinicians (e.g., physicians, psychologists, social workers) in mental health programs; further, nurses in women’s health programs were less likely to deliver BI than other types of clinicians in mixed-gender programs; Those women veterans with more medical problems were no more likely to receive BI than those with fewer medical problems. Conclusions: Given that women veterans are a rapidly growing veteran population and a VA priority, underuse of BI for women veterans screening positive at a lower-risk level and those with more medical comorbidities requires attention, as do potential gaps in service delivery of BI in primary care and women’s health programs. Women veterans health and well-being may be improved by tailoring screening for a younger cohort of women veterans at high-risk for, or with co-occurring disorders and then training providers in best practices for BI implementation.
