Selective CO2 Electrochemical Reduction Enabled by a Tricomponent Copolymer Modifier on a Copper Surface

Electrochemical CO2 reduction over Cu could provide value-added multicarbon hydrocarbons and alcohols. Despite recent breakthroughs, it remains a significant challenge to design a catalytic system with high product selectivity. Here we demonstrate that a high selectivity of ethylene (55%) and C2+ products (77%) could be achieved by a highly modular tricomponent copolymer modified Cu electrode, rivaling the best performance using other modified polycrystalline Cu foil catalysts. Such a copolymer can be conveniently prepared by a ring-opening metathesis polymerization, thereby offering a new degree of freedom for tuning the selectivity. Control experiments indicate all three components are essential for the selectivity enhancement. A surface characterization showed that the incorporation of a phenylpyridinium component increased the film robustness against delamination. It was also shown that its superior performance is not due to a morphology change of the Cu underneath. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicate that a combination of increased local CO2 concentration, increased porosity for gas diffusion, and the local electric field effect together contribute to the increased ethylene and C2+ product selectivity.

Applications of emerging botanical hydrocolloids for edible films: A review

In recent years, many studies have been conducted on the production of edible films from emerging gums, which are mostly made from botanical sources. However, each one interacts differently with the film compounds, producing films with different properties that may improve or hinder their utilization in food packaging. Gambling disorder seeking treatment patients and tobacco use in relation to clinical profiles

Objectives: Tobacco smoking and gambling disorder (GD) often co-occur. However, few studies have assessed the extent to which cigarette smoking may serve to classify and/or better define GD behaviour profiles. Methods: Among a large sample of n = 3,652 consecutive treatment-seeking patients with GD (91% men). Smokers were compared to non-smokers across different sociodemographic, clinical, psychopathological and personality variables. The effect sizes for the means and the proportion differences between the groups were estimated. An evaluation of the smoking changes over the last 15 years was also performed. Results: From the total sample, 62.4% of gamblers reported tobacco use. A decreasing linear trend in tobacco use was observed within the studied period, women having a more irregular pattern. The use of tobacco was linked to the use of alcohol and other illegal drugs. Gamblers who smoke, as compared to those who don’t, presented lower education levels, lower social position indexes and active employment. They were younger, with an earlier age of onset, shorter duration of the gambling behavior, higher GD severity, more psychological symptoms, higher scores in novelty seeking and lower scores in reward dependence, self-directedness and self-transcendence. Conclusions: Gamblers seeking treatment who smoke display particular social, clinical, psychological, temperamental and character features different from non-smoking gamblers, suggesting that the presence or absence of comorbid smoking condition in GD should always be considered when developing an optimal treatment, as gamblers who smoke might need treatment strategies different from non-smoking gamblers.

Sulfobetaine-based polydisulfides with tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water alcohols mixture, depolymerization kinetics and surface wettability

Hypothesis: Synthesis of a new family of polymers having a polydisulfide structure can be conducted from sulfobetaine-based derivative of natural (R)-lipoic acid. A polydisulfide backbone of polymer can be depolymerized by response to external stimuli and sulfobetaine pendant groups ensure the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behaviour temperatures that can be modulated according to the nature of the solvent and concentration. Experiments: Sulfobetaine-bearing polydisulfides were synthesized from dithiolane derivatives and then characterized. UCST behavior of the polymers in water and in mixtures containing different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) was investigated. The regeneration of monomers from the polymers in response to external stimuli was examined using UV-vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Tunable surface wettability were shown on the grafted polymers. Findings: Decreasing polarity and/or increasing alcohol percentage in the water mixtures induced an increase in the cloud points of the polymers in the solutions. Thermoresponsive behaviour were repeatable and fully reversible with negligible hysteresis from aggregate to unimer state. The regeneration of monomers by depolymerization was tunable by temperature and sunlight. A thickness dependence on surface wettability was observed on wafers covalently modified with polydisulfides. Red yeast rice prevents chronic alcohol-induced liver disease by attenuating oxidative stress and inflammatory response in mice

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is characterized by dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis, edema, necrosis, etc. Studies have reported that some dietary nutrition factors have beneficial effects in improving ALD. Red yeast rice (RYR), a traditional herbal supplement, has been confirmed to lower cholesterol mainly due to its component monacolin K. However, the effect of RYR on ALD has not been investigated. In this study, mice were supplemented with a daily oral gavage of 4 g/kg 50% ethanol for 8 weeks to induce a chronic ALD. RYR (150 mg kg(-1) day(-1)) was supplied to ALD mice in treatment group. The results showed that RYR supplementation significantly attenuated hyperlipidemia, elevated circulating inflammatory cytokines, hepatic structural damage, and oxidative stress in mice supplemented with alcohol with no effects on body weight. Moreover, RYR significantly suppressed alcohol-induced hepatic NF-kappa B activation and apoptosis. Our results suggest that RYR is capable of preventing ALD mainly by attenuating hepatic oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Practical applications RYR was known for cholesterol-lowering effect through its main component monacolin K. The current study revealed that RYR was capable of ameliorating ALD, which is characterized by profound dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis, edema, etc. Our results indicated that the protective effect of RYR on ALD is largely achieved by regulating lipid metabolism, and closely related to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of RYR. This study provides research foundation for the development of RYR-related food or pharmaceutical products, especially targeting for ALD.

Photoactive amphiphilic nanoreactor: A chloroplast-like catalyst for natural oxidation of alcohols

Exploring catalytic processes performed under natural conditions is interesting, but there remains a great challenge in developing highly efficient catalysts for natural oxidation of alcohols. Herein, we report a chloroplast-like catalyst comprised of photoactive carbon dots (CDs), catalytically active Pt nanoparticles, and amphiphilic nanotubes. Under simulated and real natural reaction conditions, our catalysts exhibited remarkable activity and long-term reusability for the oxidation of various alcohols, significantly outperforming that of other counterpart catalysts and reported thermal/photocatalytic systems. It was demonstrated that when the carbon dots and the amphiphilic nanotubes respectively played a role in the light-harvesting and the substrate transport the Pt/CDs heterointerface acted as the active center for the matter conversion. Such an elaborate cooperation, an advanced process in the photosynthesis of plant, contributed to the excellent catalytic performance. This contribution provides a new design concept for artificial photocatalysts, which is very promising for developing sustainable catalytic processes.

Biocompatible, antibacterial, polymeric hydrogels active against multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains for food packaging applications

Microbial infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have become a public health threat and cause substantial morbidity and mortality in hospitals as well as in the community and livestock. Pseudomonas aeruginosa YUSA1 isolated from freshwater was found to contain an antagonistic compound against MRSA and other MDR S. aureus strains. The crude ethyl acetate extract (CEE) of cell-free supernatant exhibited in vitro antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against MRSA. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of CEE (as determined by broth-dilution) against MRSA were 25 and 50 mu g/ml, respectively. The effect of CEE on MRSA biofilm formation was assessed by crystal violet staining and an MTT viability assay. Pretreatment of human skin fibroblasts (HSFs) with CEE dose-dependently inhibited MRSA adhesion and invasion, and in vitro cytotoxicity analysis showed CEE was compatible with HSFs at its MIC and MBC. In addition, an CEE containing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA/CEE) hydrogel fabricated by freeze-drying method exhibited significant anti-MRSA activity at concentrations >= 200 mu g/ml. Our results indicate CEE-incorporated PVA polymeric hydrogels have potential use as a food packaging material with antibacterial and antifouling effects on MRSA and other MDR S. aureus strains.

Assimilable nitrogen reduces the higher alcohols content of huangjiu

Yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN) sources play an important role in the formation of higher alcohols in wine. In this study, the types and amounts of YAN sources and the genes that regulate the synthesis of higher alcohols in a yeast used for huangjiu brewing, Saccharomyces cerevisiae HJ, were assessed for the first time. Quantitative realtime PCR experiments demonstrated that S. cerevisiae HJ genes controlling the production of higher alcohols were expressed at significantly different levels during different growth stages and at different YAN levels, indicating that YAN significantly impacts the total higher alcohols concentration of huangjiu. Ammonium salts especially NH4Cl showed greater effect in reducing the content of higher alcohols than amino acids or urea. After optimization, the addition of NH4Cl (200 mg/L) most effectively reduced the content of higher alcohols at the end of fermentation with little effect on the cell growth rate, final cell density and ethanol concentration. Total higher alcohols decreased by 39%, while the concentrations of isobutanol, isoamylol and 2-phenylethanol decreased by 47%, 28%, and 44%, respectively. The addition of NH4Cl promoted the formation of esters and enriched the amino acids in huangjiu. This study provides a new insight to control the quality of huangjiu, especially the content of higher alcohols based on the strategy of adding NH4Cl.

Electrochemical Arylation of Aldehydes, Ketones, and Alcohols: from Cathodic Reduction to Convergent Paired Electrolysis

Arylation of carbonyls, one of the most common approaches toward alcohols, has received tremendous attention, as alcohols are important feedstocks and building blocks in organic synthesis. Despite great progress, there is still a great gap to develop an ideal arylation method featuring mild conditions, good functional group tolerance, and readily available starting materials. We now show that electrochemical arylation can fill the gap. By taking advantage of synthetic electrochemistry, commercially available aldehydes (ketones) and benzylic alcohols can be readily arylated to provide a general and scalable access to structurally diverse alcohols (97 examples, >10 gram-scale). More importantly, convergent paired electrolysis, the ideal but challenging electrochemical technology, was employed to transform low-value alcohols into more useful alcohols. Detailed mechanism study suggests that two plausible pathways are involved in the redox neutral alpha-arylation of benzylic alcohols.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies of gasoline oxidative stability – Attempt to devise new gasolines chemical stability index

Fuels stored in storage tanks undergo aging processes. In particular, this applies to fuels containing biocomponents. The ability to quickly assess changes taking place in fuel is more and more critical due to the growing resources of fuels stored for a long time. Moreover, it is essential for maintaining the fuel quality. The purpose of this work was to develop a method enabling determination of the stability of gasolines containing biocomponents and allowing for early warning of quality deterioration. For that, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was tested as it allows for fast, easy, and continuous determination of the gasoline quality. For that, the gasoline electrical parameters were determined by the EIS before and during aging. Then those results were compared with such physico-chemical parameters that change the most quickly during aging. It has been found that selected electrical parameters derived from the impedance spectra, namely, resistance, capacitance, relaxation time, and impedance values at a given frequency decrease with the aging time linearly or exponentially. The changes of those parameters indicate the formation of polar and/or ionic products and decrease of the fuel viscosity, increasing its conductivity. Furthermore, spectral studies of the samples indicate the formation of unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as -OH and C=O group-containing species. These observations are corroborating well with conclusions derived from the EIS studies. Notably, the obtained results indicate the correlation between electrical parameters and critical physicochemical properties of the fuel, thus suggesting possibility of applying the electrical parameters for gasoline quality assessment.
