Distinct paths to alcohol problems: Impacts of childhood maltreatment, attachment insecurity, and interpersonal problems

Childhood maltreatment is a strong risk factor for increased alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. One possible explanation for these associations is the influence of dysfunctional attachment styles and interpersonal problems in adulthood. Individuals who have experienced childhood maltreatment are likely to develop maladaptive interpersonal styles due to insecure attachment. Maladaptive interpersonal styles may increase emotional distress, which in turn, can make these individuals vulnerable to alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. Using data from 508 undergraduate students, this study examined the associations between three types of childhood maltreatment (i.e., sexual abuse, punishment that included physical abuse, and a negative home atmosphere that included neglect), alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems via insecure attachment and interpersonal problems. The results showed that punishment predicted alcohol problems via avoidant attachment and selfish interpersonal style. Sexual abuse and negative home atmosphere predicted alcohol consumption through anxious attachment and selfless interpersonal style. In addition, sexual abuse directly predicted alcohol problems. These findings provide new insights for the field of childhood maltreatment and addiction literature.

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals the key regulatory genes for higher alcohol formation by yeast at different a-amino nitrogen concentrations

Higher alcohols are important flavor substance in alcoholic beverages. The content of alpha-amino nitrogen (alpha-AN) in the fermentation system affects the formation of higher alcohols by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, the effect of alpha-AN concentration on the higher alcohol productivity of yeast was explored, and the mechanism of this effect was investigated through metabolite and transcription sequence analyses. We screened 12 most likely genes and constructed the recombinant strain to evaluate the effect of each gene on high alcohol formation. Results showed that the AGP1, GDH1, and THR6 genes were important regulators of higher alcohol metabolism in S. cerevisiae. This study provided knowledge about the metabolic pathways of higher alcohols and gave an important reference for the breeding of S. cerevisiae with low-yield higher alcohols to deal with the fermentation system with different alpha-AN concentrations in the brewing industry.

Evaluation of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis as protective culture for active packaging of non-fermented foods: Creamy mushroom soup and sliced cooked ham

An innovative edible coating, made from food grade polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and gelatin hydrolysates (HGel), was evaluated as a carrier of Lactococcus lactis acting as anti-listeria protective culture for refrigerated foods. The coating was applied on a compostable polylactic acid film surface and its anti-listeria activity was evaluated at 4 degrees C in a liquid culture medium and in solid agar, inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes. The best results were obtained in agar, exerting a bactericide effect, whereas in the liquid medium the coating had bacteriostatic behaviour. Furthermore, the active coating was applied to the surface of bags or separator liners made from polylactic acid. Its effectivity was evaluated with creamy mushroom soup (bags) and sliced cooked ham (separator liners) previously inoculated with L. monocytogenes and stored at 4 degrees C. Results showed that the coating was effective at inhibiting pathogen growth; however, it did not display a bactericide effect in the foods. In addition, L. lactis remained viable in all experiments conducted in this study. The acidification produced by L. lactis, because of the generation of organic acids, did not compromise the sensory properties of the sliced cooked ham after 16 days of refrigerated storage. In contrast, consumers perceived a mushroom soup acidification because of a greater decrease in pH than the sliced cooked ham. This study demonstrates that a food grade polyvinyl alcohol polymer blended with gelatin hydrolysates can be used as a carrier of protective cultures of L. lactis to increase the microbiological safety of refrigerated foods.

Enhanced flux and fouling resistance forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer

Although forward osmosis (FO) technology has been widely adopted for water treatment, it still faces great challenges, including low permeability and fouling problem. Herein, a novel forward osmosis membrane was developed with a stable, uniform and defect-free polyvinyl alcohol/polydopamine coated zeolitic imidazolate framework (PVA/PDA@ZIF-8) hybrid selective layer to simultaneously enhance its transport property and fouling resistance. The prepared FO membrane exhibits improved water flux without losing the selectivity, since the PDA@ZIF-8 provide additional preferential passageway for water transporting while hinder the diffusion of salt. The optimized membrane shows a higher water flux than pristine PVA membrane (14.2 vs. 8.7 L m(-2) h(-1) in FO mode, 24.3 vs. 14.8 L m(-2) h(-1) in PRO mode) with a reasonable selectivity considering as J(s)/J(w) value (0.44 vs. 0.4 g L-1 in FO mode, 0.38 vs. 0.33 g L-1). Moreover, the dynamic fouling experiments with organic foulants (protein and polysaccharide) indicate that the prepared membrane exhibits strong antifouling property and excellent permeation recovery ability (>95.0%) due to the optimized surface property. This study opens a new avenue for treatment wastewater by developing a forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Influence of diethyl ether on engine performance and emissions characteristics of blends of butanol, pentanol or biodiesel (neem oil methyl ester) in a single cylinder diesel engine

Biodiesel has become a promising alternative biofuel that exhibits problems like high cost of feedstock, poor atomisation due to high viscosity, stability issues, poor flow properties and high NOx emissions as compared to conventional diesel. Alcohols have recently drawn much attention as a low cost biofuel that, exhibit problems like low cetane number and miscibility issues. Addition of fuel additives, for example, diethyl ether (DEE), may be effective to overcome the problems with biodiesel or alcohols. In this work, the influence of DEE on engine performance and emissions were investigated for diesel/biodiesel blends, diesel/butanol blends or diesel/pentanol blends. Fuel blends of biodiesel (B20), butanol (BU20), pentanol (PN20), biodiesel with DEE (B20D10), butanol with DEE (BU20D10) and pentanol with DEE (PN20D10) were prepared. Experiments were conducted on a single cylinder diesel engine for varying load conditions at constant speed. Engine performance and emission characteristics were determined and compared.

Monitoring drug consumption in Innsbruck during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown by wastewater analysis

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has developed into a serious pandemic with millions of cases diagnosed worldwide. To fight COVID-19 pandemic, over 100 countries instituted either a full or partial lockdown, affecting billions of people. In Tyrol, first lockdown measures were taken on 10 March 2020. On 16 March 2020, a curfew went into force which ended on 1 May 2020. On 19 March 2020. Tyrol as a whole was placed in quarantine which ended on 7 April 2020. The governmental actions helped reducing the spread of COVID-19 at the cost of significant effects on social life and behaviour. Accordingly, to provide a comprehensive picture of the population health status not only input from medical and biological sciences is required, but also from other sciences able to provide lifestyle information such as drug use. Herein, wastewater-based epidemiology was used for studying temporal bends of licit and illicit drug consumption during lockdown and quarantine in the area of the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck (174,000 inhabitants). On 35 days between 12 March 2020 and 15 April 2020, loads of 23 markers were monitored in wastewater. Loads determined on 292 days between March 2016 and January 2020 served as reference. During lockdown, changes in the consumption patterns of recreational drugs (i.e. cocaine, amphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, methamphetamine, and alcohol) and pharmaceuticals for short-term application (i.e. acetaminophen. codeine, and trimethoprim) were detected. For illicit drugs and alcohol, it is very likely that observed changes were linked to the shutdown of the hospitality industry and event cancelation which led to a reduced demand of these compounds particularly on weekends. For the pharmaceuticals, further work will be necessary to darify if the observed declines are indicators of improved population health or of some kind of restraining effect that reduced the number of consultations of medical doctors and pharmacies. Crystallization characteristics of amorphous trehalose dried from alcohol

Trehalose forms a glass that can be used to preserve labile substances under desiccation. The crystallization characteristics, namely crystallization temperature (T-cry) and isothermal crystallization behavior of amorphous trehalose, dried from alcohol (methanol, ethanol), was analyzed and the results were compared with those for the amorphous trehalose freeze-dried from water. The use of alcohol as a solvent lowered the T-cry from 184 +/- 6 degrees C for the case of an aqueous solvent to 103 +/- 5 degrees C/methanol and 120 +/- 8 degrees C/ethanol. The formation of multiple forms of crystals and partial melting were suggested by the thermal analysis. Isothermal crystallization experiments showed that the alcohol-originated amorphous trehalose was eventually exclusively converted into beta-form crystals. The induction period (t(ind)) before the start of isothermal crystallization was markedly shortened when alcohol was used as the solvent compared to water. The t(ind) values for various amorphous sugar samples including the alcohol-originated ones could be correlated with difference between T-cry and the sample temperature.

Polyoxometalate-Ionic Liquids (ILs) and Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan/ILs Hydrogels for Inhibiting Bacteria Colonising Wall Paintings

Historical monuments are increasingly being threatened by unexpected microbial colonizers, leading to their subsequent deterioration. Here, two tetraalkylphosphonium polyoxometalate ionic liquids (Q14-IL and Q16-IL) were successfully synthesized, which showed excellent antibacterial activity against four bacteria colonising wall paintings. Notably, Q14-IL exhibited superior antibacterial efficacy compared to longer alkyl Q16-IL. Additionally, polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA-CS) hydrogels containing two ILs were prepared, and the morphology, thermal stability, swelling ratio and antibacterial activity were systematically evaluated. The results suggest that higher CS content resulted in more uniform micropores and increased the swelling ratio. However, fewer antibacterial ILs were released and diffused over time from the matrix. Hydrogels with 5% CS content exhibited the highest antibacterial activity, which was mainly attributed to the synergetic antibacterial activity of positively charged ammonium (-NH3+) groups of CS and quaternary phosphonium cation of ILs. This study may provide an alternative strategy for fighting against bacterial communities colonising ancient artworks.

The burden of non-communicable diseases and mortality in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the pre-, early- and late-HAART era

Objectives To estimate the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mortality among PLHIV in the pre-, early- and late-HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) era. Methods We conducted a cohort study using population-based Danish medical registries including all adult HIV-infected residents of the Central Denmark Region during 1985-2017. For each HIV patient, we selected 10 comparisons from the background population matched by age, sex and municipality of residence. Based on hospital-related diagnoses we estimated the prevalence and incidence of specific NCD at diagnosis and at 5 and 10 years. Results We identified 1043 PLHIV and 10 430 matched comparisons. PLHIV had lower socioeconomic status and more were born outside western Europe. At HIV diagnosis, 21.9% of PHLIV vs. 18.2% of non-HIV individuals had at least one NCD, increasing to 42.2% vs. 25.9% after 10 years. PLHIV had higher prevalence and cumulative incidence of alcohol abuse, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ischaemic heart disease, mental disorders, renal and liver disease, but no increased risk of diabetes mellitus. Only PLHIV in the age groups 41-50 and > 51 years had an increased incidence of osteoporosis. From the pre- to the late-HAART era, 10-year mortality among PLHIV decreased from 45.5% to 9.4% but continued at more than twice that of uninfected comparisons. However, in the late-HAART era, the mortality of PLHIV who were alive 2 years after HIV diagnosis was approaching that of comparisons. Conclusions Even in the late-HAART era, PLHIV have an excess mortality, which may be attributable to several NCDs being more prevalent among PLHIV. The prevalence rates of ischaemic heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and renal disease tend to increase over calendar time. Therefore, improvement of survival and quality of life of PLHIV neets strategies to reduce the risk of developing NCDs, including avoiding toxic antiretroviral therapy and lifestyle changes.
