Enhanced flux and fouling resistance forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer

Although forward osmosis (FO) technology has been widely adopted for water treatment, it still faces great challenges, including low permeability and fouling problem. Herein, a novel forward osmosis membrane was developed with a stable, uniform and defect-free polyvinyl alcohol/polydopamine coated zeolitic imidazolate framework (PVA/PDA@ZIF-8) hybrid selective layer to simultaneously enhance its transport property and fouling resistance. The prepared FO membrane exhibits improved water flux without losing the selectivity, since the PDA@ZIF-8 provide additional preferential passageway for water transporting while hinder the diffusion of salt. The optimized membrane shows a higher water flux than pristine PVA membrane (14.2 vs. 8.7 L m(-2) h(-1) in FO mode, 24.3 vs. 14.8 L m(-2) h(-1) in PRO mode) with a reasonable selectivity considering as J(s)/J(w) value (0.44 vs. 0.4 g L-1 in FO mode, 0.38 vs. 0.33 g L-1). Moreover, the dynamic fouling experiments with organic foulants (protein and polysaccharide) indicate that the prepared membrane exhibits strong antifouling property and excellent permeation recovery ability (>95.0%) due to the optimized surface property. This study opens a new avenue for treatment wastewater by developing a forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Disaccharide anthocyanin delphinidin 3-O-sambubioside from Hibiscus sabdariffa L.: Candida antarctica lipase B-catalyzed fatty acid acylation and study of its color properties

Enzymatic lipophilization is an important process to extend the use of anthocyanins in lipidic media. In this work delphinidin 3-O-sambubioside (Dp3sam) isolated from Hibiscus sabdariffa L. flower was esterified with octanoic acid using Candida antarctica lipase B. The physical-chemical properties of the new lipophilic pigment were studied by UV-vis spectroscopy. Dp3sam with chloride, acetate and formate as counter ions were employed to study the lipophilization reaction. The hydrolysis of the reagent was avoided with a formate counter ion and the expected product was achieved with a noteworthy change of solubility. 1D and 2D NMR characterization of Dp3sam-C8 confirmed that the lipophilization took place at the primary alcohol of the glucoside moiety. Overall, the Dp3sam-C8 ester presents a stabilization of the quinoidal base (blue color) at neutral or moderate alkaline pH, which foresees a potential use of this pigment as a broad kind of industries on lipo-soluble formulations.

Genetic variation in the prebiotic carbohydrate and mineral composition of kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) adapted to an organic cropping system

Kale is a nutrient-rich leafy green that is mostly grown in conventional agricultural systems. The demand for organic kale has increased in the U.S.; however, cultivars bred for conventional production are not suited to organic production in terms of yield and nutritional quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variation in biomass, prebiotic carbohydrates, and minerals of 18 commercial cultivars and 35 PI accessions of kale adapted to the organic system. Significant genetic variation in both prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals was noted in both kale cultivars and PI accessions. In the kale cultivars, leaf biomass ranged from 41.4-271.2 g/plant, with kale cultivar Frizzy Joe being the highest and Fizz the lowest. A single 100-g serving from these kale cultivars provides mineral micronutrients (20-314 mg K; 95-539 mg Ca; 20-67 mg Mg; 13-87 mg P; 0.4-3.1 mg Fe; 0.3-0.9 mg Zn; 0.4-1.9 mg Mn; 20-1030 mu g Cu; and 0-940 mu g Se) and prebiotic carbohydrates, including sugar alcohols (1.7-26.9 mg), simple sugars (0.03-334 mg), and raffinose and fructooligosaccharides (0-11.2 mg). Compared to the commercial cultivars, the kale accessions had higher concentrations of minerals, except for magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn), and prebiotic carbohydrates, except for sucrose and verbascose + kestose. In the commercial cultivars, heritability estimates for prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals were relatively low except for sugar alcohols, Mg, and zinc (Zn). In the kale accessions, heritability estimates of glucose, fructose, potassium (K), and selenium (Se) were high. Overall, significant genetic variation exists among kale commercial cultivars and germplasm for prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals, indicating the nutritional quality of kale in organic production can be further improved by germplasm selection.

Active and intelligent biodegradable packaging films using food and food waste-derived bioactive compounds: A review

Background: The growing environmental concern of plastic packaging disposal has led to the innovation of biodegradable biopolymers. Consumer demand and health concern further necessitate the emergence of active and intelligent packaging system to monitor the quality of packed food. Whereas, the use of chemical dyes as an indicator in smart packaging is not suitable for food packaging because of their high toxicity and harmful effects on human health and the environment. Hence, the researchers are focused on natural pigments derived from plants and food waste as indicating substance in biodegradable packaging and also for the valorization of food waste. Scope and approach: This paper summarizes the research on the utilization of naturally derived food- and food waste-based pigments (anthocyanins, curcumin, betalains, carotenoids, chlorophyll, brazilin, quercetin, etc.) with biopolymeric matrices (starch, cellulose, chitin, gums, agar, etc.) to fabricate smart biodegradable films, for effective monitoring of spoilage and quality of meat products, seafood, milk, and others. Key Findings and Conclusions: The results show that the smart packaging material developed by the biopolymers with plant-based pigment has the potential to replace the traditional plastic packaging materials. The extracted from food and food waste act as an indicator in smart packaging and promotes the valorization of food waste. The biodegradable packaging is economical, safe, non-toxic, sensitive, and natural pigments act as a quality indicator in packaging systems. Further, these packaging films can be optimized and commercialized and to be employed as active and intelligent packaging for visual quality evaluation of fresh food products.

Highly Thermal-Resistant and Biodegradable Textile Sizes from Glycols Modified Soy Proteins for Remediation of Textile Effluents

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) sizes are widely used in textile industry due to their excellent sizing properties on synthetic fibers and their blends. However, PVA contains non-biodegradable chemicals and is a major contributor to environmental pollution related to the textile industry. To overcome this problem, an environmental-benign and highly thermal-resistant yarn coating is fabricated from soy proteins, an agricultural byproduct. The soy proteins are chemically modified by glycols having varying chain lengths and number of hydroxyl groups. Compared with the physically modified soy proteins and their sized yarns, coating made from the soy proteins esterified by 1,4-butanediol show 91.38% increment in work of rupture at 120 degrees C and cotton/polyester (65/35) yarns sized by 1,4-butanediol esterified soy protein sizes have 39.91% decrease in coefficient of friction. In addition, 1,4-butanediol esterified soy sizes have a five-day biochemical oxygen demand/chemical oxygen demand of 0.476, indicating that the chemically modified soy sizes have high biodegradability in activated sludge. Successful utilization of modified soy sizes can promote large-quantity applications of soy byproducts, impelling high value addition to agricultural byproducts and sustainability of textile industry.

Volatile compounds sorption during the aging of Chinese Liquor (Baijiu) using Pottery Powder

Pottery jar is the preferred storage vessel for aging baijiu, Chinese liquor, and it could sorb liquor micro-compounds. The objective of this work was to identify the sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder, and gained insights regarding the sorption processes and mechanism. The sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder of different sizes was studied using different kinetic models. The results showed that the sorption capacity varied among particle size of pottery powder, which also affected equilibrium time. The sorption process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the external diffusion was the rate-limiting step. Liquor volatiles in pottery powder at equilibrium were characterized, which detected alcohols, esters, acids, and furan by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These findings demonstrated pottery could not only cause subtractive changes that occur to liquor during the aging period, but also as a vector for transferring aromas sorbed when reused.

A bionic PEEK composite structure with negatively charged surface adsorbing molecular brushes possessing improved biotribological properties for artificial joints

To improve the contact mode of artificial joints and their tribological performance, inspired by the ‘soft-on-hard’ structure of ‘cartilage-subchondral bone’ as well as negatively charged characteristic of the cartilage surface with brush-like molecules, a polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-hydrogel composite structure with negatively charged surface adsorbing cationic molecules through electrostatic interaction was designed and fabricated. Characterization results demonstrated that polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel strengthened by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microcrystals was successfully fabricated on the PEEK substrate through ultra-violet (UV) radiation. Adsorption of cationic monomers was also confirmed. The PEEK-hydrogel composite structure had significantly reduced friction coefficient, similar to 80% lower than that of PEEK, owing to the synergistic effect of biphasic and boundary lubrication. This work proposes a novel route to develop the friction surface of artificial joints with advanced performance and contributes to the understanding of lubrication mechanism of artificial joints.

Fast-Track Liver Transplantation: Six-year Prospective Cohort Study with an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Protocol

Introduction Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has been shown to facilitate discharge, decrease length of stay, improve outcomes and reduce costs. We used this concept to design a comprehensive fast-track pathway (OR-to-discharge) before starting our liver transplant activity and then applied this protocol prospectively to every patient undergoing liver transplantation at our institution, monitoring the results periodically. We now report our first six years results. Patients and methods Prospective cohort study of all the liver transplants performed at our institution for the first six years. Balanced general anesthesia, fluid restriction, thromboelastometry, inferior vena cava preservation and temporary portocaval shunt were strategies common to all cases. Standard immunosuppression administered included steroids, tacrolimus (delayed in the setting of renal impairment, with basiliximab induction added) and mycophenolate mofetil. Tacrolimus dosing was adjusted using a Bayesian estimation methodology. Oral intake and ambulation were started early. Results A total of 240 transplants were performed in 236 patients (191 male/45 female) over 74 months, mean age 56.3 +/- 9.6 years, raw MELD score 15.5 +/- 7.7. Predominant etiologies were alcohol (n = 136) and HCV (n = 82), with hepatocellular carcinoma present in 129 (54.7%). Nine patients received combined liver and kidney transplants. The mean operating time was 315 +/- 64 min with cold ischemia times of 279 +/- 88 min. Thirty-one patients (13.1%) were transfused in the OR (2.4 +/- 1.2 units of PRBC). Extubation was immediate (< 30 min) in all but four patients. Median ICU length of stay was 12.7 hours, and median post-transplant hospital stay was 4 days (2-76) with 30 patients (13.8%) going home by day 2, 87 (39.9%) by day 3, and 133 (61%) by day 4, defining our fast-track group. Thirty-day-readmission rate (34.9%) was significantly lower (28.6% vs. 44.7% p=0.015) in the fast-track group. Patient survival was 86.8% at 1 year and 78.6% at five years. Conclusion Fast-Tracking of Liver Transplant patients is feasible and can be applied as the standard of care If you are interested in 148043-73-6, you can contact me at any time and look forward to more communication. Conjoint adolescent developmental trajectories of alcohol and marijuana use and early adult outcomes among North American Indigenous people

Objective: The current study examined the developmental interrelationships between alcohol and marijuana use trajectories from ages 10 to 18 years in a sample of North American Indigenous adolescents. Distinct co-use groups were formed to create profiles of young adult outcomes. Method: Dual group-based trajectory models of marijuana and alcohol frequency were estimated using data from a longitudinal community-based participatory study of Indigenous adolescents from the upper Midwest and Canada. Joint probabilities were used to create co-use groups, and profiles were created using early adult (Mean Age – 26.28 years) outcomes. Results: Four joint trajectory groups were identified: 1) no marijuana and no/low alcohol use (34.4%), 2) mid-onset alcohol only (14%), 3) mid-onset co-use starting at age 13 (24%), and 4) early-onset co-use starting at age 11 (22%). High probabilities existed that adolescents would use marijuana early if they began drinking alcohol at the youngest ages, and that adolescents would not use marijuana if they drank infrequently or delayed drinking until mid-adolescence. Adult outcomes were poorer for the early- and mid-onset co-use groups, but there were few differences between the no/low use and alcohol-only groups. Conclusion: Co-use of marijuana and alcohol was associated with poorer outcomes in early adulthood, particularly for the group with an earlier age of onset. Abstaining from either substance in adolescence was associated with better outcomes.

Critical Analysis of Laboratory Testing Methodologies When Interpreting Conflicting Results at Autopsy

Toxicological analysis is an important diagnostic component of a postmortem examination and may involve both antemortem and postmortem specimens. Here, we present a case in which an antemortem specimen, when reanalyzed in the forensic toxicology laboratory, resulted in values that contradicted the reported values from the medical record and required further investigation. This case involves a 51-year-old man decedent with a medical history of chronic alcohol abuse. His antemortem urine drug screen, performed upon admission to an emergency department, was negative. His serum blood alcohol level at presentation was reported as 0.960 g/dL and, repeated 4 hours later, was 0.500 g/dL with a comment indicating that there was significant lipemia interfering with the results. At autopsy, the antemortem blood sample collected from the hospital, postmortem blood, and vitreous humor samples were analyzed and all 3 samples were found to be negative for ethanol. The hospital laboratory used an enzymatic assay for ethanol detection, which is known to be impacted by lipemia, and the forensic laboratory used head-space gas chromatography, which is not impacted by lipemia. This highlights the need to critically analyze laboratory testing methodologies when interpreting conflicting results at autopsy.
