A new insight of lignin pyrolysis mechanism based on functional group evolutions of solid char

To elucidate the mechanism of biomass lignin pyrolysis, the functional group evolution in lignin chars derived at 200-600 degrees C was investigated using two-dimensional perturbation correlation infrared spectroscopy, associated with the properties of the volatile products. Results from 2D-PCIS pointed that the change in the alcohol groups C-OH occurs earlier than that in the carbonyl groups C=O before 250 degrees C, corresponding to the reaction of keto-enol tautomerization: C-OH -> C=O, and the cleavage of bonds and remodeling reactions of the side chains of the benzene rings are synchronous. Besides, the formation of simple substituted benzene structures was earlier than complex substituted benzene structures. Decarbonylation, dehydrogenation and dealkylation were intensified during polycondensation of benzene rings. These findings are significant for achieving an in-depth understanding of lignin pyrolysis.

A novel gas flow-through photocatalytic reactor based on copper-functionalized nanomembranes for the photoreduction of CO2 to C1-C2 carboxylic acids and C1-C3 alcohols

A novel concept of gas flow-through photo(electro)catalytic reactor based on copper-functionalized nanomembranes for the conversion of CO2 is presented. The nanomembranes are based on aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays grown over a microperforated metallic substrate, acting as an electron collector and to provide the necessary robustness, which are then functionalized by copper oxide (Cu2O or CuO) electrodeposition. For comparison, the behavior of copper oxide electrodeposited over the bare microperforated metallic substrate is also given. The concept is quite different from conventional photocatalytic approaches. Due to the peculiar characteristics and conditions in the photoreactor (working under a cross-flow of gaseous CO2 saturated with water passing through the nanomembrane photocatalyst layer), it is possible to evidence for the first time the highly selective CO2 conversion to C1-C2 carboxylic acids (formic, acetic and oxalic acids) without formation of H-2, CO, CH4 or other hydrocarbons. Copper-oxide introduces an additional reaction pathway to C1-C3 alcohols (methanol, ethanol and isopropanol) or derived products (methyl formate). The best performances are obtained with p-type Cu2O over n-type TiO2 nanotubes (Faradaic Efficiency -FE- = 42% to methanol and 44% to acetic acid) due to the creation of a p-n-type heterojunction that improves visible light harvesting, giving an apparent quantum yield (ratio between electrons reacted and photons absorbed) with solar illumination of about 21%. FE up to 47% to methanol or 73% to acetic acid are observed among the other tested samples. The relevance of these results to the mechanism of CO2 conversion is also discussed.

Promotion effect of La on oxygen vacancy formation over Zn-Cr based catalyst for isobutanol synthesis from syngas

A series of catalysts were designed and synthesized via doping lanthanum into ZnCr oxide to realize efficient synthesis of isobutanol from syngas. By applying a combination of characterizations (XRD, TEM, EPR, XPS and in situ FT-IR) and DFT calculations, the effects of lanthanum promoter on catalyst structure and catalytic performance were investigated. With the doping of lanthanum, ZnCrLax composite oxides with a novel catalyst structure were constructed, in which Zn atom at tetrahedron site was partly substituted by doping La atom. The presence of this structure enhanced the formation of more oxygen vacancy sites and further benefitted the CO activation. In addition, formate intermediate was easier to generate and exhibited superior stability over ZnCrLax surface thus leaded to remarkably promoted catalytic activity. The ZnCrLa0.05 catalyst achieved optimum total alcohols selectivity of 61%, and the fraction of isobutanol reached as high as 24.6% under CO conversion of 23%.

I hope this article can help some friends in scientific research. I am very proud of our efforts over the past few months and hope to 104-38-1 help many people in the next few years. Recommanded Product: 1,4-Bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzene.

Fine-tuning the architecture of loose nanofiltration membrane for improved water flux, dye rejection and dye/salt selective separation

Herein, loose nanofiltration membranes were prepared using non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. In NIPS, the non-solvent controls the morphology of the skin layer of the asymmetric membranes formed, while the solvent tunes the morphology of the lower layer. The membranes were made from polyethersulfone in n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) with the addition of dicarboxylic acids (glutaric acid, azelaic acid). Aliphatic alcohols (1-butanol, 1-octanol) were added to the solvent to tailor the skin layer pore morphology. Cross-sectional electron microscope images revealed the acids created nano-voids and shorter micro-voids. The addition of alcohols extended the micro-voids and improved symmetry. Pore size distribution results showed that the addition of the alcohols did indeed reduce the pore size as hypothesised. The performance of the modified polyethersulfone membranes was greatly improved in terms of pure water flux and salt passage without sacrificing the dye rejection. The loose nanofiltration membranes prepared in this study showed good dye/salt separation capability compared to most of the results reported in literature. The membranes were compacted with de-ionised water at an applied pressure of 4 bar for 5 h and rejections tests were done at 2 bar. It is hereby reported that the membranes achieved a high salt passage (Na2SO4 rejection varying between <3% and similar to 12%), as well as sustainable high Congo red rejection of 97%. The proportionality constant is the rate constant for the particular unimolecular reaction. the reaction rate is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactant. Environmental-friendly electrospun phase change fiber with exceptional thermal energy storage performance

Electrospun phase change fiber (PCF) releases more than 85 wt% of organic solvents yet suffers from long-term thermal cycling-induced leakage. In this contribution, a novel PEG/PVA composite PCF was obtained by electrospinning their aqueous solution instead of using organic solvent in traditional method, which makes design of PCF towards green and cost-effective direction. Meanwhile, a simple surface crosslinking technology was applied to prevent leakage of PEG during the long-term service, and improve the thermal stability and tensile strength of the obtained crosslinked PCF (CPCF). The CPCF-50 shows the optimal morphological structure and exhibits the a relative high latent heat of 72.3 J/g. Owing to the confinement effect, CPCF exhibits robust thermal, chemical, and morphological stability with respect to 1000 thermal cycling. The CPCF also shows exceptional temperature regulation capability. The thermoregualting times of heating and freezing processes of CPCF-50 are 59.0% and 89.5% longer than those of the control and CPCF-0, respectively. Therefore, the eco-friendly and cost-effective prepared CPCF in this work, which exhibits relatively high latent heat and long-term reliability, paves a new way for the large-scale production of phase change fiber for thermal energy storage application.

Separation of low molecular weight alcohols from water with deep eutectic solvents: Liquid-liquid equilibria and process simulations

Low molecular weight alcohols such as ethanol, propanol and butanol are currently gaining attention owing to their complete combustion and higher calorific value. These low molecular weight alcohols are obtained by ABE (acetone-butanol-ethanol) fermentation, where they are produced within an aqueous phase. Extraction is contemplated as one of the effective methods for the separation of these lower alcohols from aqueous phase through a solvent. The solvent explored here relates to the formulation of Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) comprising of DL-menthol (Hydrogen Bond Donor) + decanoic acid (Hydrogen Bond Acceptor). The current work adopts a multiscale approach leading with DES preparation and subsequent batch scale Liquid-Liquid Equilibria (LLE) measurement and finally concludes through process simulation studies. The experimental LLE data of DES (1)-Alcohol (2)-Water (3) gave a higher affinity towards alcohol and lower solubility with water. The experimental results were thereafter regressed with the NRTL model using the additional constraint where a positive tangent plane distance is imposed for all the tie lines within the Gibbs energy of mixing (G(m)) surface. The average absolute RMSD values correlated via NRTL and COSMO-SAC model were found to be 0.003 and 0.008 respectively. A flow sheet with a hybrid extraction-distillation system is then proposed and simulated for the solvent recovery, scale-up and cost analysis. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Automatic cognitions as mediators of parental influence on adolescent cannabis use

Aims: Multiple social influences affect cannabis use in adolescents, including parental and peer cannabis use norms. However, the mechanisms of influence underlying these social influences remain unclear. Recent studies have suggested that cognitions about cannabis use and the effects of cannabis may mediate social influences. The current study explored the relationship between automatic self-generated cognitions and their relationship with parental influences on cannabis use in a sample of n = 675 11 to 16-year-old adolescents over three years (Mean Age: 13.96, SD = 0.88, 56.4% female). Methods: Participants reported perceptions of parental cannabis use and completed a cannabis word association task (CWAT), an open-ended cannabis outcome expectancy liking (COEL) task, and measures of cannabis use in the past year. Results: Perceived parental use did not directly predict cannabis use two years later. However, a latent construct loading on both CWAT and COEL scores strongly predicted cannabis use over the following year. Structural modelling demonstrated that the association between previous cannabis use and parental cannabis use and adolescents’ cannabis use over the next two years was fully mediated by cognitions. Conclusion: The results of the study are discussed and interpreted through the lens of dual-process theories.

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms and problematic alcohol use: The explanatory role of drinking motives

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the unique explanatory role of alcohol use motives above the effects of each other, using a multiple mediation model, for the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptomatology and problematic alcohol use among a young ethno-racially diverse sample of college students with current (past-month) alcohol use. Participants were 454 college students (81.72% female, Mage = 22.46, SD = 4.71). Results indicated that coping motives significantly explained the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and alcohol consumption (past year), risky drinking, and recent alcohol use (past month) as behavioral indices of problematic drinking after controlling for the variance accounted for by recent cannabis use, smoking, and anxiety and depressive symptoms (with small to medium effect sizes). These findings are discussed in terms of the development of specialized treatments to specifically target coping oriented alcohol use motives in the context of obsessive-compulsive symptoms among young adults with clinically significant OCD symptoms and comorbid problematic alcohol use.

Patterns of bi-directional relations across alcohol use, religiosity, and self-control in adolescent girls

Examining predictors of alcohol use among adolescent girls is increasingly important to enhance prevention efforts, given that the gender gap in alcohol use is steadily closing. While both religiosity and self-control have been independently associated with decreased alcohol use, little research has explored 1) whether religiosity and self-control are reciprocally related and 2) whether the reciprocal association between these constructs may indicate different patterns in the development of alcohol use. As such, this study examined whether there are multiple patterns of reciprocal relationships across religiosity, self-control, and alcohol use among adolescent girls. Latent variable mixture modeling was combined with an autoregressive cross-lagged panel model to identify discrete, prototypical patterns of longitudinal associations (i.e., subgroups) across religiosity, self-control, and alcohol use among 2,122 girls ages 13-17. Psychosocial covariates (e.g., conduct problems) were examined as predictors of each subgroup. Two subgroups were identified. Self-control was associated with reduced alcohol use in both the majority (87.56% of the sample) and minority (12.44% of the sample) subgroups, but only the majority subgroup also demonstrated associations between religiosity, self-control, and alcohol use. Religiosity may predict lower alcohol use in a majority of adolescent girls but this association may not be present among all girls, suggesting that there is a qualitative difference in how religiosity is associated with self-control and alcohol use between subgroups. Results also suggest that higher levels of conduct problems may predict which girls are more likely to demonstrate associations between only self-control and alcohol use, and demonstrate no significant associations with religiosity.

How Did Japan Cope with COVID-19? Big Data and Purchasing Behavior

Japan has been recognized as having successfully controlled the spread of COVID-19. This study aims to gather insights to combat the spread of infection in our daily lives by observing our purchasing behavior. We use point of sales (POS) data from supermarkets, convenience stores, home centers, drug stores, and electronics retail stores for a nationwide analysis. Our analysis revealed the following. First, the Japanese actively prevented the spread of infection by voluntarily wearing masks, using alcohol-based disinfectants, and gargling. Second, they willingly stayed home during the semi-lockdown. Third, they continued to purchase infection prevention essentials during periods of both low and high levels of infection. We conclude that continuing to wear masks, wash and sanitize hands, and gargle, along with spending more time at home to maintain safe distancing, will be effective in reducing the spread of the virus and combatting the pandemic. Finally, infections and deaths were primarily concentrated in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Kansai region, where the nature of the spread of the infection was different from that in small and middle-sized prefectures.
