Nanoimprint assisted free standing porous vanadium oxide nanosheet based ammonia sensor

Artificial intelligence in healthcare sector endures a largest share in non-invasive and point-of-care disease diagnosis by interfacing human behaviour through wearable pathway. In a view to develop sensing element for wearables, the concept of free standing poly-1-lactic acid (PLLA)/V2O5 nanosheets using sacrificial layer – (poly vinyl alcohol- PVA)method has been proposed in this work and the studies on ammonia (NH3) sensing has been briefly discussed. In a view to enhance the sensing performance of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) film, surface modified PLLA substrates using nanoimprint lithography (NIL) have been implemented. The V+5 stoichiometry of the free standing PLLA/V2O5 films were confirmed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), it was observed that the patterned structure of about similar to 250 nm diameter was uniformly distributed on the surface of PLLA/V2O5 film. The chemiresistive sensing studies proved that the sensor response of V2O5 films on patterned PLLA substrate exhibited enhanced response about similar to 17 towards 75 ppm than the V2O5 film on unpatterned PLLA substrate. We believe that this strategy of patterned free standing PLLA/V2O5 nanosheets will help in fabricating the wearable sensors with better sensing performance.

Preventing E-cigarette use among high-risk adolescents: A trauma-informed prevention approach

Exposure to childhood trauma increases the risk of tobacco use during adolescence. Recent studies have also reported potentially increased vulnerabilities to electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among youth with a history of childhood trauma. While empirical evidence supporting the relationship between childhood trauma and adolescent e-cigarette use is emerging, few effective preventive interventions are available to curb e-cigarette use among adolescent victims of childhood trauma. This article reviews current evidence with respect to how childhood trauma could increase risk for nicotine dependence and e-cigarette use in adolescent populations. Furthermore, this paper describes the development, design, and implementation of Rise Above (RA), a randomized, controlled trial of a trauma-informed, e-cigarette preventive intervention. Lessons learned are also discussed, including the challenges of implementing evidence-informed prevention work within communities vulnerable to traumatic events.

Genetic variation in the prebiotic carbohydrate and mineral composition of kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) adapted to an organic cropping system

Kale is a nutrient-rich leafy green that is mostly grown in conventional agricultural systems. The demand for organic kale has increased in the U.S.; however, cultivars bred for conventional production are not suited to organic production in terms of yield and nutritional quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variation in biomass, prebiotic carbohydrates, and minerals of 18 commercial cultivars and 35 PI accessions of kale adapted to the organic system. Significant genetic variation in both prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals was noted in both kale cultivars and PI accessions. In the kale cultivars, leaf biomass ranged from 41.4-271.2 g/plant, with kale cultivar Frizzy Joe being the highest and Fizz the lowest. A single 100-g serving from these kale cultivars provides mineral micronutrients (20-314 mg K; 95-539 mg Ca; 20-67 mg Mg; 13-87 mg P; 0.4-3.1 mg Fe; 0.3-0.9 mg Zn; 0.4-1.9 mg Mn; 20-1030 mu g Cu; and 0-940 mu g Se) and prebiotic carbohydrates, including sugar alcohols (1.7-26.9 mg), simple sugars (0.03-334 mg), and raffinose and fructooligosaccharides (0-11.2 mg). Compared to the commercial cultivars, the kale accessions had higher concentrations of minerals, except for magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn), and prebiotic carbohydrates, except for sucrose and verbascose + kestose. In the commercial cultivars, heritability estimates for prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals were relatively low except for sugar alcohols, Mg, and zinc (Zn). In the kale accessions, heritability estimates of glucose, fructose, potassium (K), and selenium (Se) were high. Overall, significant genetic variation exists among kale commercial cultivars and germplasm for prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals, indicating the nutritional quality of kale in organic production can be further improved by germplasm selection.

Folate, alcohol, ADH1B and ALDH2 and colorectal cancer risk

Objective: There is limited evidence on the interaction by alcohol dehydrogenase 2 (ADH1B) (rs1229984) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) (rs671) regarding the associations of alcohol and a methyl diet (low folate and high alcohol intake) with cancer risk, partly because of rare polymorphisms in Western populations. Design: In a case-control study, we estimated the ORs and 95 % CIs to evaluate the associations of ADH1B and ALDH2 genotypes with colorectal cancer (CRC) and the joint association between methyl diets and ADH1B and ALDH2 polymorphisms with CRC risk using logistic regression models. Setting: A hospital-based case-control study. Participants: In total, 1001 CRC cases and 899 cancer-free controls admitted to two university hospitals. Results: We found that alcohol intake increased the risk of CRC; OR (95 % CI) was 2 center dot 02 (1 center dot 41, 2 center dot 87) for >= 60 g/d drinkers compared with non-drinkers (P (trend) < 0 center dot 001). The associations for two polymorphisms with CRC were not statistically significant. However, we found a potential interaction of ALDH2 with methyl diets and CRC. We observed a 9 center dot 08-fold (95 % CI 1 center dot 93, 42 center dot 60) higher risk of CRC for low-methyl diets compared with high-methyl diets among individuals with an A allele of ALDH2, but the association was not apparent among those with ALDH2 GG (P (interaction) = 0 center dot 02). Conclusions: Our data support the evidence that gene-methyl diet interactions may be involved in CRC risk in East Asian populations, showing that a low-methyl diet increased the risk of CRC among individuals with an A allele of ALDH2. Dihydromyricetin improves mitochondrial outcomes in the liver of alcohol-fed mice via the AMPK/Sirt-1/PGC-1 alpha signaling axis

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD), due to the multifactorial damage associated with alcohol (ethanol) consumption and metabolism, is one of the most prevalent liver diseases in the United States. The liver is the primary site of ethanol metabolism and is subsequently injured due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), acetaldehyde, and metabolic stress. Building evidence suggests that dihydromyricetin (DHM), a bioactive flavonoid isolated from Hovenia dulcis, provides hepatoprotection by enhancing ethanol metabolism in the liver by maintaining hepatocellular bioenergetics, reductions of oxidative stress, and activating lipid oxidation pathways. The present study investigates the utility of DHM on hepatic mitochondrial biogenesis via activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/Sirtuin (Sirt)-1/PPARG coactivator 1 (PGC)-1 alpha signaling pathway. We utilized a forced drinking ad libitum study that chronically fed 30% ethanol to male C57BL/61 mice over 8 weeks and induced ALD pathology. We found that chronic ethanol feeding resulted in the suppression of AMPK activation and cytoplasmic Sirt-1 and mitochondrial Sirt-3 expression, effects that were reversed with daily DHM administration (5 mg/kg; intraperitoneally [i.p.]). Chronic ethanol feeding also resulted in hepatic hyperacetylation of PGC-1 alpha, which was improved with DHM administration and its mediated increase of Sirt-1 activity. Furthermore, ethanol-fed mice were found to have increased expression of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), reduced mitochondrial content as assessed by mitochondrial DNA to nuclear DNA ratios, and significantly lower levels of hepatic ATP. In contrast, DHM administration significantly increased TFAM expression, hepatic ATP concentrations, and induced mitochondrial expression of respiratory complex III and V. In total, this work demonstrates a novel mechanism of DHM that improves hepatic bioenergetics, metabolic signaling, and mitochondrial viability, thus adding to the evidence supporting the use of DHM for treatment of ALD and other metabolic disorders. Difficulties regulating positive and negative emotions in relation to coping motives for alcohol use and alcohol problems among hazardous drinkers

Objective: Hazardous drinking is a prevalent form of alcohol misuse. Past research has examined emotion regulation difficulties as a risk factor for hazardous drinking; however, the majority of prior studies have focused on regulation of negative emotions. Recent work has implicated difficulties regulating positive emotions in relation to alcohol misuse, yet, it is largely unknown if difficulties regulating positive emotions are significantly related to alcohol misuse outcomes after accounting for difficulties regulating negative emotions. Method: A racially diverse sample of hazardous drinkers were recruited from a university setting (75% female, M-age = 22.1, SDage = 4.0) to participate in a treatment study. Data from baseline was used in the current study. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate relations between difficulties regulating positive and negative emotions and alcohol problems both directly and indirectly via coping motives. Results: After controlling for sex, age, and levels of negative and positive affect, positive but not negative emotion regulation difficulties were significantly associated with alcohol problems. Difficulties regulating emotions (both positive and negative), were significantly related to coping motives; each valence of difficulty was also indirectly related to alcohol problems via drinking to cope. Conclusions: Difficulties regulating emotions – both positive and negative – carry a heightened risk of engaging in coping-oriented alcohol use during drinking episodes and this maladaptive means of self regulation may explain a common pathway to experiencing alcohol-related problems. Notably, difficulties regulating positive emotions appear to offer incremental, explanatory value over and above difficulties regulating negative emotions. Such findings offer important clinical and theoretical implications.

The carbon footprint of alternative jet fuels produced in Brazil: exploring different approaches

Although the potential of Alternative Jet Fuels (AJF) to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions has been widely reported upon in the literature, there are still discrepancies among the results. These may be due to the different GHG accounting methods, including those used by different Low-Carbon Policies (LCPs). To have a clearer understanding of the life cycle performance of AJF, the carbon footprint of ten pathways was estimated, comprising promising feedstocks – such as soybean, palm, sugarcane, sugarcane residues, forestry residues, used cooking oil, beef tallow, and steel off-gases – and ASTM-approved technologies: Hydroprocessed Fatty Acids, Alcohol-to-Jet, and Fischer-Tropsch. Six methodological approaches were used: the attributional and the consequential life cycle assessment, as well as guidelines for the four LCPs: Renovabio (Brazil), CORSIA (aviation sector), RFS (United States), and RED II (Europe). Soybean-based pathway (24 to 98.7 gCO(2e)/MJ) had the low to no potential for reducing GHG when compared to their fossil counterparts, mainly due to land use change. Of all food-based pathways, AJF produced from sugarcane performed the best (-10.4 to 43.7 gCO(2e)/MJ), especially when power surplus was credited. AJF from palm oil could present significant GHG reduction for palm expansion in degraded pasturelands. By contrast, Fischer-Tropsch of lignocellulosic residues showed the highest potential for reducing GHG (-95% to -130%). Different from food-based pathways, the potential GHG reduction of residues-based pathways converged within a narrower range (-130% to -50%), except when residual feedstocks have to be redirected from their current economic use. It could lead to GHG emissions higher than fossil fuel.

Study on the treatment of sudden cadmium pollution in surface water by a polymer enhanced ultrafiltration process

The removal of cadmium(ii) pollution in surface water by a polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) process was investigated. Three water soluble polymers, chitosan (CTS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylate sodium (PAAS), were selected for this study. Of the three polymers, PAAS had strong interactions with Cd2+, and the PEUF achieved a high removal of Cd2+; therefore, PAAS was used as a complexing agent for the simulated cadmium pollution experiment. Experiments were performed as a function of the aqueous pH, polymer/Cd2+ ratio (P/M), ionic strength and humic acid. Under optimum experimental conditions, the Cd2+ removal rate reached 100%. pH was the main factor affecting removal of Cd2+, which decreased to 60% at a pH of 4. The Cd2+ removal was found to decrease as NaCl and HA were added. The analysis showed that the mechanism of NaCl could be a compressed electric double layer, while the mechanism of HA and H+ was competitive complexation. Finally, UF membrane fouling, the dissociation of PAAS-Cd and the regeneration of PAAS were investigated. The results showed that the higher P/M was, the lower the pH, the higher the HA concentration, and the more serious the UF membrane fouling were. The dissociation rate of PAAS-Cd reached 99.8% at a pH of 2.5. When the P/M was 5, the removal rate of Cd reached 99.6% with the addition of 20% new PAAS in the regenerate. This result showed that the PEUF process could be a promising method for removing Cd pollution in surface water.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of symptomatic vertebral hemangioma with long-term follow-up

There is a paucity of literature on vertebroplasty in hemangioma. The effectiveness with short-term and long-term follow-up is an important insight for research. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and the long-term efficacy of vertebroplasty in the treatment of the patient with symptomatic vertebral hemangioma. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The outcome was evaluated by immediate post-procedure and 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years of follow-up clinical status of the patients. The significance was determined by using a paired t-test between the pre-procedure and post-procedure severity of pain, activity score, and analgesic. The P-value < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: A total of 38 vertebroplasties were performed in 34 patients. Additionally, the embolization of residual soft tissue was performed in 4 patient and Percutaneous alcohol injection for posterior elements involvement was performed in 9 patients. Immediate after the procedure, 44.12% of patients became asymptomatic, 38.23% of patients showed significant improvement, 11.77% of patients remained static and 2.94% of patients deteriorated and needed laminectomy. The complication rate was 29.4%, but only 2 patients were symptomatic and needed surgical decompression. There was significant relief of pain (P < 0.05), reduced analgesic intake (P < 0.05), and increased activity (P < 0.05) immediately after the procedure, 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years follow-up. Conclusion: PVP is an effective therapeutic option for the treatment of VH with fewer complications. The additional procedures like preprocedural embolization and percutaneous alcohol injection enhance the outcome and avoid complicated surgical interventions. Diastereo- and Enantioselective Ruthenium-Catalyzed C-C Coupling of 1-Arylpropynes and Alcohols: Alkynes as Chiral Allylmetal Precursors in Carbonyl anti-(alpha-Aryl)allylation

Highly tractable 1-aryl-1-propynes, which are readily accessible via Sonogashira coupling, serve as chiral allylmetal pronucleophiles in ruthenium-JOSIPHOS-catalyzed anti-diastereo-and enantioselective aldehyde (alpha-aryl)allylations with primary aliphatic or benzylic alcohol proelectrophiles. This method enables convergent construction of homoallylic sec-phenethyl alcohols bearing tertiary benzylic stereocenters. Both steric and electronic features of aryl sulfonic acid additives were shown to contribute to the efficiency with which a more selective and productive iodide-bound ruthenium catalyst is formed. As corroborated by isotopic labeling studies, a dual catalytic process is operative in which alkyne-to-allene isomerization is followed by allene-carbonyl reductive coupling via hydrogen auto-transfer. Crossover of ruthenium hydrides emanating from these two discrete catalytic events is observed. The utility of this method is illustrated by conversion of selected reaction products to the corresponding phenethylamines and the first total syntheses of the neolignan natural products (-)-crataegusanoids A-D.
