Alprazolam is a psychoactive triazolo-benzodiazepine, commonly prescribed for the treatment of anxiety disorders and considered safe due to its high therapeutic index. It is frequently detected in polydrug-related deaths but there are very few cases of fatal intoxication by alprazolam not in combination with alcohol or other drugs. A fatal poisoning by alprazolam in a 60-years old male physician has been reported. At autopsy, no evidence of traumatic injuries or diseases was observed except for signs of bronchopneumonia and slight hypertrophy of the left ventricle. Alprazolam and its major metabolite (alpha-hydroxyalprazolam) were detected in biological samples through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Key aroma-active compounds in brown sugar and their influence on sweetness

Brown sugar (non-centrifugal cane sugar) is popular for its pleasant caramel-like aroma and sweetness. Vacuum simultaneous steam distillation and extraction (V-SDE) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to study the volatile fraction of brown sugar. To further determine the aroma-active compounds in brown sugar, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O) were used in conjunction with aroma extraction dilution analysis (AEDA), odor activity values (OAVs), and sensory evaluation to analyze the effects of the key aroma-active compounds on sweetness. A total of 37 aroma-active compounds were obtained, mainly including ketones, pyrazines, alkanes, phenols and alcohols, which contributed caramel, sweet and fruity notes to brown sugar. Among them, furfural, benzeneacetaldehyde, 2,3-butanedione, beta-damascenone, 2-methoxyphenol, dihydro-2-methyl-3(2H)-furanone, 2-furanmethanol and butyrolactone could significantly enhance the sweetness of sugar solution because of the congruency of the aroma attributes and sweetness.

Enantioenriched acyclic alpha-substituted beta-hydroxy amides are valuable compounds in chemical, material and medicinal sciences, but their enantioselective synthesis remains challenging. A catalytic kinetic resolution (KR) of such amides with selectivity factor(s) up to >200 is developed via enantioselective acylation of primary alcohol with N-heterocyclic carbene. An enhanced selectivity for the catalytic KR process is realized using cyclic tertiary amine as base additive. Diastereomeric transition state models for the process are proposed to rationalize the origin of enantioselectivity.

Lifetime alcohol intake, drinking patterns over time and risk of stomach cancer: A pooled analysis of data from two prospective cohort studies

Alcohol consumption is causally linked to several cancers but the evidence for stomach cancer is inconclusive. In our study, the association between long-term alcohol intake and risk of stomach cancer and its subtypes was evaluated. We performed a pooled analysis of data collected at baseline from 491 714 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition and the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for incident stomach cancer in relation to lifetime alcohol intake and group-based life course intake trajectories, adjusted for potential confounders including Helicobacter pylori infection. In all, 1225 incident stomach cancers (78% noncardia) were diagnosed over 7 094 637 person-years; 984 in 382 957 study participants with lifetime alcohol intake data (5 455 507 person-years). Although lifetime alcohol intake was not associated with overall stomach cancer risk, we observed a weak positive association with noncardia cancer (HR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.00-1.06 per 10 g/d increment), with a HR of 1.50 (95% CI: 1.08-2.09) for >= 60 g/d compared to 0.1 to 4.9 g/d. A weak inverse association with cardia cancer (HR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.87-1.00) was also observed. HRs of 1.48 (95% CI: 1.10-1.99) for noncardia and 0.51 (95% CI: 0.26-1.03) for cardia cancer were observed for a life course trajectory characterized by heavy decreasing intake compared to light stable intake (P-homogeneity = .02). These associations did not differ appreciably by smoking or H pylori infection status. Limiting alcohol use during lifetime, particularly avoiding heavy use during early adulthood, might help prevent noncardia stomach cancer. Heterogeneous associations observed for cardia and noncardia cancers may indicate etiologic differences.

Historical monuments are increasingly being threatened by unexpected microbial colonizers, leading to their subsequent deterioration. Here, two tetraalkylphosphonium polyoxometalate ionic liquids (Q14-IL and Q16-IL) were successfully synthesized, which showed excellent antibacterial activity against four bacteria colonising wall paintings. Notably, Q14-IL exhibited superior antibacterial efficacy compared to longer alkyl Q16-IL. Additionally, polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA-CS) hydrogels containing two ILs were prepared, and the morphology, thermal stability, swelling ratio and antibacterial activity were systematically evaluated. The results suggest that higher CS content resulted in more uniform micropores and increased the swelling ratio. However, fewer antibacterial ILs were released and diffused over time from the matrix. Hydrogels with 5% CS content exhibited the highest antibacterial activity, which was mainly attributed to the synergetic antibacterial activity of positively charged ammonium (-NH3+) groups of CS and quaternary phosphonium cation of ILs. This study may provide an alternative strategy for fighting against bacterial communities colonising ancient artworks.

This investigation utilized a large sample of individuals undergoing substance use treatment to examine the CES-D’s structural validity and establish its predictive utility relative to treatment discharge. The sample included 5750 individuals who were receiving substance abuse treatment at 19 different residential treatment facilities. The CES-D was administered to participants over the course of their time in a residential inpatient substance use treatment program. The present study used a split sample method to conduct both exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses. Results of both the EFA and CFA indicated that the CES-D contains three first order factors measuring negative mood, positive affect, and interpersonal interactions as well as a second-order high score factor which can be used to guide interpretation and symptom monitoring. Individuals receiving residential treatment fell into one of three distinct groups based on their CES-D scores, and that their scores (and subsequent trajectories of scores over time) were differentially related to discharge status. Implications for practice and the utility of the CES-D within substance use populations are discussed.

Performance of engineered cementitious composites incorporating crumb rubber as aggregate

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) are a special type of fiber reinforced cementitious composites that are reinforced with Polyvinyl alcohol fibers. ECC exhibits outstanding deformable and durability properties. However, the limited availability and high cost of silica sand required for the production of ECC have limited its widespread applications. Hence, it is imminent to find materials that can be used as alternatives to partially or totally replace the silica sand in ECC. This paper presents the results from a feasibility study on the use of crumb rubber which is a recycled material as aggregates in ECC mixtures. In this study, crumb rubber was incorporated to replace the silica sand up to 100% and the influence on the performance evaluated. The study showed that the incorporation of crumb rubber causes a reduction in the strength of the ECC, though these ECC qualify to be used in the structural application. Also, the ductility and the durability of ECC incorporating crumb rubber was improved with the incorporation of crumb rubber. The mid-span deflection and tensile strain of ECC incorporating only crumb rubber as aggregate were found to be 96.8% and 110.2%, respectively higher than the ECC made with only silica sand as aggregate. Also, the incorporation of crumb rubber as aggregate into the mixtures resulted in a reduction in the permeability properties of the composites. The porosity, water absorption and chloride penetration of ECC were reduced by 33%, 36% and 12%, respectively when crumb rubber was used as a 100% replacement of silica sand. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Fuel cells (FC) produce electricity in a continuous mode through a catalytic reaction and have many possible applications, as for example, in the transportation sector substituting the combustion engines. These devices can be regarded as a free emission technology if the fuel used in them is obtained in a renewable mode, such as hydrogen from the reforming of light alcohols obtained from biomass fermentation or gasification. In fact, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) use hydrogen as fuel that, in turn, has to be free of carbon monoxide (CO) since the later chemical species poisons the platinum based catalyst applied in the electrochemical process. This review aims at clarifying how multicomponent catalysts can be used in the hydrogen production from light alcohols reforming to overcome the limitations of current catalysts. Specifically, their low thermal stability, the CO formation that is not suitable for FC use, the carbon (coke) production that poisons the reforming catalyst, or byproducts (i.e. CH4) generation that reduces the hydrogen amount produced. Special emphasis is paid to the applicability of theoretical methods for the study and development of improved multicomponent catalysts for light alcohols reforming.

Tissue-specific transcriptome recovery on withdrawal from chronic alcohol exposure in zebrafish

Alcohol consumption can lead to a wide range of systemic disorders brought about by transcriptional changes. Recent studies have documented altered behavior and physiology in zebrafish exposed to alcohol. In this work, we have identified the changes in the zebrafish transcriptome in response to chronic alcohol exposure. We have further followed the extent of transcriptional recovery upon withdrawal from alcohol and found evidence of tissue-specific responses. Our results indicate a greater extent of recovery of the brain transcriptome compared to the liver. We identify two distinct classes of genes in response to withdrawal from alcohol exposure – those that recover their pre-alcohol expression profile versus those that retain altered expression even after the fish are removed from the alcohol environment. Finally, we have examined gender-specific responses to alcohol exposure in zebrafish and find evidence for distinct alcohol tolerance levels. Upon chronic alcohol exposure, a higher percentage of genes show perturbation in expression profile in males compared to females. Female fish also recover better with more genes regaining the control expression level upon withdrawal from alcohol. Overall, our work identifies genes and pathways perturbed by exposure to alcohol, and demonstrates the extent of gender- and tissue-specific transcriptional changes associated with chronic alcoholism and withdrawal. Degradable Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Supramolecular Plastics with High Mechanical Strength in a Watery Environment

It is challenging to fabricate degradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based plastics that can be used in watery environments because PVA is soluble in water. In this study, PVA-based supramolecular plastics with excellent degradability in soil and high mechanical strength in watery environments are fabricated by the complexation of vanillin-grafted PVA (VPVA), hydrophobic humic acid (HA), and Fe3+ ions (hereafter denoted as VPVA-HA-Fe complexes). Large-area PVA-based plastics can be easily prepared from a solution of VPVA-HA-Fe complexes using a blade-coating method. The high-density of hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions, as well as the reinforcement of self-assembled Fe3+-chelated HA nanoparticles, facilitate the fabrication of PVA-based plastics with a breaking strength of approximate to 85.0 MPa. After immersion in water at room temperature for 7 d, the PVA-based plastics exhibit a breaking strength of approximate to 26.2 MPa, which is similar to that of polyethylene in its dry state. Furthermore, owing to the reversibility of the hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions, the VPVA-HA-Fe plastics are recyclable and can be conveniently processed into plastic products with desired shapes. After being placed under soil for approximate to 108 d, the PVA-based plastics are completely degraded into nontoxic species without requiring manual interference.
