Chemically building interpenetrating polymeric networks of Bi-crosslinked hydrogel macromolecules for membrane supercapacitors

Macromolecular polymer hydrogels used in flexible supercapacitors and batteries have attracted extensive attention in recent years. In this paper, we use a simple polymer interpenetrating technology involving covalent cross-linking and non-covalent cross-linking aspects based on polyvinyl alcohol and carboxylated chitosan to prepare a flexible polymer hydrogel membrane for supercapacitor. The obtained hydrogel membrane has good flexibility and high ionic conductivity of 2.561 x 10(-2) s.cm(-1). The hydrogel electrode membrane prepared by in-situ polymerization of aniline exhibits an area specific capacitance of 580 mF.cm(-2) at a current density of 0.5 mA.cm(-2). And the symmetric all-gel-state supercapacitor with hydrogel membrane as the gel electrolyte shows a high specific capacitance of 325 mF.cm(-2) at 1.0 mA.cm(-2). Autoignition characterization of methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol over a wide range of operating conditions in LTC/HCCI

In this work, the autoignition properties of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, and sec-butanol are studied in HCCI and compared. Experiments were performed, characterizing the sensitivity of these fuels to equivalence ratio, intake temperature, residual fraction, intake pressure, and engine speed. Under all of the low boost pressure operating conditions considered (1.15 bar), the order of reactivity of each fuel from low to high is: isopropanol, sec-butanol, ethanol approximate to n-propanol approximate to isobutanol, methanol, n-butanol. n-butanol was less sensitive to changes in intake temperature than the other six fuels at low boost conditions. The required intake temperature to maintain a constant combustion phasing decreased significantly for n-butanol with intake pressure due to emergent intermediate temperature heat release (ITHR). At an intake pressure of 1.95 bar, secbutanol showed some amount of ITHR which decreased its sensitivity to intake temperature. However, secbutanol still maintained its high autoignition resistance, unlike n-butanol. Isobutanol did not show any ITHR at this intake temperature, though did show a decrease in intake temperature sensitivity. With the exception of n-butanol, the behavior and sensitivity of each alcohol fuel to the wide array of operating conditions considered were similar, with small differences in autoignition resistance. This means that these six fuels could potentially be blended and used interchangeably with little change to their autoignition characteristics.

Optical and conductivity studies of polyvinyl alcohol-MXene (PVA-MXene) nanocomposite thin films for electronic applications

A new family of 2D materials known as MXenes (Ti3C2Tx) is combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form nanocomposites thin film with a thickness in micrometre range (7.20-7.88 mu m) by using a relatively simple way, a drop-casting technique. The multi-layered structure of the MXenes bound together with PVA results in a high degree of structural disorder due to increasing defects in the nanocomposites. Detailed optical studies include UV-Vis absorption, optical absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient, and band gap energy determinations are conducted to investigate electromagnetic wave absorption capability of the nanocomposites. Resistivity measurement is studied as well. Electrical conductivity of the PVA is significantly increased with at least an improvement of 3000 times as compared to pure PVA (1 x 10(-13) Sm-1). The highest a value of 7.25 x 10(-3) Sm-1 is found in the nanocomposites with a mass ratio of PVA to MXenes, 80:20 with its calculated optical absorption coefficient value in range 4000-5000 cm(-1). The optical findings, as well as the electrical conductivity enhancement exhibited by these nanocomposites, explore the route to apply MXenes in polymer-based multifunctional nanocomposites for various applications such as optoelectronics, conductive filler, and electromagnetic absorbers.

Experimental study of temperature profile and gas-liquid heat transfer in flame spread over jet fuel under longitudinal air flow

The rectangular pools with the same length of 100 cm but different widths of 4 and 20 cm are used to conduct experiments of flame spread over jet fuel of RP-3. The direction of longitudinal air flow is same and opposite to direction of flame spread respectively. Six air flow velocities 0.45, 0.88, 1.3, 1.73, 2.15 and 2.57 m/s are employed. The spatial temperature distributions and convective heat dissipation at pool bottom are examined using thermocouples. The heat loss is negligible for 10 mm-thick fuel layer, but it is evident for 3 mm-thick fuel layer. The integral method is proposed to calculate the flame radiation imposed to subsurface flow region. The gas-liquid heat transfer model including liquid-phase convection, flame radiation and convective heat dissipation is established for calculating energy balance involving flame spread over RP-3. The calculated heat fluxes follow well with experimental measurements, regardless of direction and magnitude of air flow. The current findings possess potential application and practical guidelines for fire prevention of liquid fires under longitudinal air flows. In order to restrict flame spread, it is a feasible method to cut off liquid convection or shield flame radiation.

Fermentation profiling of rice wine produced by Aspergillus oryzae KSS2 and Rhizopus oryzae KJJ39 newly isolated from Korean fermentation starter

The objective of this study was to determine the fermentation characteristics of rice wine produced by koji inoculated with Aspergillus oryzae KSS2 and Rhizopus oryzae KJJ39 on moisturized wheat-bran and rice grain. We also compared rice wine samples produced in this study and three commercial Makgeolli. The alcohol content was about 12% higher in the rice wine samples fermented by wheat-bran koji than in the other samples. In all of the samples, the range of pH value was 3.8-4.6 and the total acid was below 0.5. The soluble solid content was highest in the rice wine sample prepared by the wheat-bran R. oryzae KJJ39 koji (15.5 degrees Brix) and overall relatively higher in the samples with wheat-bran koji than rice koji. The content of reducing sugar was twofold higher in rice wine prepared by koji inoculated with R. oryzae KJJ39 than A. oryzae KSS2. The volatile acid content was higher in rice wine produced by the wheat-bran A. oryzae KSS2 koji than the others. In the analyses of five organic acids, A. oryzae KSS2 was found to produce more malic acid and fumaric acid while R. oryzae KJJ39 to do more citric acid, lactic acid and acetic acid. The rice wine sample prepared with the wheat-bran A. oryzae KSS2 koji contained much higher concentration of sucrose, maltose and amino acids. Comprehensively, the results of fermentation profiling suggest that both A. oryzae KSS2 and R. oryzae KJJ39 can be applied to the production of rice wine as a valuable fungal isolate for fermentation start.

Addictions in the COVID-19 era: Current evidence, future perspectives a comprehensive review

Background: In the context of the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, an up-to-date review of current challenges in addictions is necessary. While large scale disasters may have an impact on substance use and addictions, the use of some substances is also likely to modify the risk of COVID-19 infection or course. Many countries have imposed lockdowns. Whether this quarantine or the end of lockdown measures will have an impact on substance use is discussed. The aim of this review is to gather knowledge for clinicians and to guide public health policies during/after lockdown. Methods: PubMed was reviewed in August 6th (2020), to determine the current evidences and observations concerning the addictions and SARS-CoV2. We used all the names of the severe acute respiratory syndrome of coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2 previously 2019 nCoV), the name of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and common substances of abuse. For the physiopathological parts, searches were conducted using key words such as infection or pneumonia. For the lockdown effects, key words such as quarantine, disaster or outbreak were used. Results: Overall, pathophysiological data showed an increased risk of infections for individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and a possible protective role of nicotine. During lockdown, there is a substantial risk of increasing SUDs. Individuals with opioid use disorder are particularly at risk of relapse or of involuntary withdrawal. After lockdown, increase of use may be observed as far as years after. Individuals with addictions are at higher risk of multimorbidity and mortality during COVID outbreak. Conclusion: This review describes useful strategies in clinical practice, including a systematic assessment of addiction comorbidity during this almost worldwide lockdown/pandemic. This review also highlights important areas for future research.

A combined interfacial polymerization and in-situ sol-gel strategy to construct composite nanofiltration membrane with improved pore size distribution and anti-protein-fouling property

Pore size distribution is crucial for the application of nanofiltration membrane in size-selective separation of industrial fluids. In this work, a novel combined interfacial polymerization (IP) and in-situ sol-gel strategy was proposed to fabricate composite nanofiltration membrane with narrow pore size distribution. Aqueous solution of piperazine and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was employed to perform interfacial polymerization with organic solution of trimesoyl chloride and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) on porous support. The non-reactive additive TEOS within the interfacially synthesized selective separation layer was then employed to perform sol-gel. The space-limited hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS molecules and their chemical bonding with PVA molecules were confirmed by analyzing membrane physico-chemical property and were found to be effective in tuning mean pore diameter, narrowing the pore size distribution and thus enhancing membrane perm-selectivity. Compared to those of membrane PA1 with similar mean pore size fabricated by only IP technique, the water permeability and rejection ratio of PEG1000 to raffinose (R-PEG1000/R-raffinose) of membrane PA-TEOS0.5 fabricated by combined IP and sol-gel technique were higher by 25.0 and 20.1%, respectively. Moreover, static adsorption and dynamic deposition tests using aqueous bovine serum albumin solution proved that in-situ sol-gel process could endow the membrane with better protein fouling resistance.

A Randomized Trial of Albumin Infusions in Hospitalized Patients with Cirrhosis

BACKGROUND Infection and increased systemic inflammation cause organ dysfunction and death in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Preclinical studies provide support for an antiinflammatory role of albumin, but confirmatory large-scale clinical trials are lacking. Whether targeting a serum albumin level of 30 g per liter or greater in these patients with repeated daily infusions of 20% human albumin solution, as compared with standard care, would reduce the incidences of infection, kidney dysfunction, and death is unknown. METHODS We conducted a randomized, multicenter, open-label, parallel-group trial involving hospitalized patients with decompensated cirrhosis who had a serum albumin level of less than 30 g per liter at enrollment. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either targeted 20% human albumin solution for up to 14 days or until discharge, whichever came first, or standard care. Treatment commenced within 3 days after admission. The composite primary end point was new infection, kidney dysfunction, or death between days 3 and 15 after the initiation of treatment. RESULTS A total of 777 patients underwent randomization, and alcohol was reported to be a cause of cirrhosis in most of these patients. A median total infusion of albumin of 200 g (interquartile range, 140 to 280) per patient was administered to the targeted albumin group (increasing the albumin level to =30 g per liter), as compared with a median of 20 g (interquartile range, 0 to 120) per patient administered to the standard-care group (adjusted mean difference, 143 g; 95% confidence interval [CI], 127 to 158.2). The percentage of patients with a primary end-point event did not differ significantly between the targeted albumin group (113 of 380 patients [29.7%]) and the standard-care group (120 of 397 patients [30.2%]) (adjusted odds ratio, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.71 to 1.33; P = 0.87). A time-to-event analysis in which data were censored at the time of discharge or at day 15 also showed no significant between-group difference (hazard ratio, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.81 to 1.35). More severe or life-threatening serious adverse events occurred in the albumin group than in the standard-care group. CONCLUSIONS In patients hospitalized with decompensated cirrhosis, albumin infusions to increase the albumin level to a target of 30 g per liter or more was not more beneficial than the current standard care in the United Kingdom. Childhood psychopathology mediates associations between childhood adversities and multiple health risk behaviours in adolescence: analysis using the ALSPAC birth cohort

Background Childhood adversity strongly predicts adolescent multiple health risk behaviours (MRBs) such as alcohol/tobacco use, self-harm and physical inactivity, and both adversities and MRBs are associated with premature mortality and several chronic health conditions that are among the leading causes of death in adults. It is therefore important to understand the relationship between adversities and MRBs and what could mediate any association. The aim of this study was to explore whether childhood psychopathology mediates associations between adversities and MRBs. Methods Participants were young people in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) (N = 5,799). Using structural equation modelling, we explored the associations between adversities before 9 years and MRBs at age 16 years. We also explored potential mediating pathways through dimensional psychopathology measured by the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire subscales at age 12 years. Results There were strong positive associations between adversities and MRBs (beta .25, 95% CI 0.20, 0.31, p < .001) suggesting that each additional adversity is associated with a 0.25 increase in number of MRBs out of 13 total risk behaviours. We found robust evidence of mediating pathways from adversities through conduct problems (beta .05, 95% CI 0.03, 0.06, p < .001), hyperactivity/inattention (beta .02, 95% CI 0.01, 0.03, p < .001) and peer relationship problems (beta -.02, 95% CI -0.03, -0.02, p < .001) to MRBs. Conclusions Increased conduct problems and hyperactivity/inattention appear to partially explain the relationship between adversities and MRBs. Peer relationship problems also appear to reduce the association between adversities and MRBs, and further research is needed to understand how to encourage peer connectivity without increasing risk of MRBs. These results suggest that interventions aimed at reducing MRBs among those exposed to childhood adversities could focus on prevention of behavioural problems. Structure, optical, and radiation shielding properties of PVA-BaTiO3 nanocomposite films: An experimental investigation

Developing different types of radiation shielding with certain specifications according to the type of radiation and method of application is essential. In this work, the radiation shielding, optical and structural features of PVA films containing BaTiO3 nanoparticles are investigated. The radiation shielding properties were measured experimentally with real gamma sources (Ba-133, Eu-152, and Cs-137). The efficiency calibration and spectrum analysis were performed with the Spectra Line Ultimate Gamma Lab packet program. Moreover, the results were compared with the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. Before radiation attenuation measurements, the prepared films were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structure of the BaTiO3 nanoparticles in the polymer matrix was studied with a scanning electron microscope (SEM, Merlin, Carl-Zeiss, LE0982). In addition, the optical properties of the polymer films were studied and presented. As the BaTiO3 content increases in the polymer matrix, transmission decreases and reflectance increases. Equally, as the BaTiO3 content increases, the value of a increases. For the shielding properties, the mass attenuation coefficient (mu(m)) increases as the BaTiO3 content increases from 0.65 to 3.57 wt%. There is a strong agreement between experimental results and the values obtained from the FLUKA Monte Carlo code.
