Benzyl 2-hydroxyacetate (1246 mg), sodium sulfate (213 mg), and acetonitrile (16 mL) were placed in a 100 ml two-necked flask fitted with a magnetic stirrer, a dropping funnel and arefluxing condenser. 2,2-difluoro-2-(fluorosulfonyl)acetic acid (3.10 mL) was then added with stirring at 45C. After addition, the mixture was further stirred for 2 hours at this temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into 10% aqueous sodium carbonate solution (50 mL) and was extracted with EtOAc (2×50 mL). The combined extracts were washed with water (50 mL) and brine (50 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated.
