General procedure: To a solution of thiol 1 (0.5 mmol) in anhyd CH2Cl2 (2 mL) was added diaryl carbinol 2 (0.6 mmol) and BF3*OEt2 (5 mol% solution in CH2Cl2; 1 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred vigorously for <1 min. After completion of the reaction as checked by TLC, the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography by using 5-10% EtOAc in hexanes to afford the desired symmetrical and unsymmetrical diarylmethyl thioether in good to quantitative yield.
